Mahlon David Vassar

ATHENS -- Funeral for Mahlon David Vassar, 75, of Athens was to be today at 2 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Sharman and the Rev. Randy Davis officiating.

Burial was to be in Athens City Cemetery.

Mr. Vassar died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born April 30, 1925, in Limestone County.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Athens and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Dot Vassar; one son, Greg D. Vassar of Athens; two daughters, Val Grubbs and Carrie Weigart, both of Athens; two brothers, Morris W. Vassar of Gadsden and Robert L. Vassar Jr. of Aurora, Colo.; and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Doc Thompson, Byron Brazier, Tommy Meadows, Kenneth Vassar, Billy Vassar and Jesse Vassar.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mary L. Woods
91, retired BellSouth supervisor

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Mary L. Woods, 91, of Hartselle will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Rodger Collins officiating.

Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Ms. Woods died Monday, May 1, 2000, at her home. She was born Aug. 12, 1908, in Chilton County to Willie Edward and Beulah Armstrong Lowe. She was a retired supervisor for BellSouth. She was the widow of H. Talmadge Woods and sister of the late Ann Lowe.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley.

Mary Sue Abernathy
94, homemaker

ATHENS -- Graveside service for Mary Sue Abernathy, 94, of Athens was to be today at 2 p.m. at Athens City Cemetery with Pat Smith officiating and Spry Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Abernathy died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Limestone Health Facility. She was born May 1, 1906, in Limestone County. She was a homemaker and a member of Walnut Grove Methodist Church.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

David Winfred Pitts
59, retired welder

ATHENS -- Funeral for David Winfred Pitts, 59, of Athens will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. R.C. Craft officiating.

Burial will be in Legg Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Pitts died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at his home. He was born July 5, 1940, in Limestone County. He was a retired welder.

He is survived by one daughter, Jackie Pitts of Elkmont; three brothers, Robert Pitts of Columbia, Tenn., Morris Pitts and Billy Pitts, both of Elkmont; one sister, Linda McGlocklin of Decatur; and one grandchild.

Charles B. Plyler Sr.
62, salesman

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Charles B. Plyler Sr., 62, of Virginia Beach, Va., will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. J.C. Raynor officiating.

Burial will be in Herring Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Plyler died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He was born Aug. 14, 1937, in Jacksonville, Fla. to Colen C. and Lillie Mae Small Plyler. He was a salesman.

He is survived by his wife, Linda G. Plyler; two sons, Charles B. Plyler Jr of Melbourne, Fla. and Kenneth Plyler of Dora; one daughter, Dorothy Oaks of Calera; one brother, Ralph Plyler of Bessemer; two sisters, Linda Merchant of Bessemer and Delta Finley of Calera; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Corrine Stockton
80, homemaker

TRINITY -- Funeral for Mary Corrine Stockton, 80, of Decatur will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Parkway Funeral Home with Larry Lang officiating.

Burial will be in Montgomery Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Stockton died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at her home. She was born Dec. 16, 1919, in Lawrence County to Felix and Mattie McCleskey. She was a homemaker and a member of Five Points Christian Church. She was the widow of Dayton Leon Stockton.

She is survived by two daughters, Doris Ridgeway of Decatur and Mary Dayton Morrow of Hartselle; one sister, Geneva Appleton of Moulton; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Drew Morrow, David Etheredge, Roger Keenum, Gordon Appleton, Willard Coffey and Clayton Parker. Nephews will be honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley.

Sarah Johnson Summerford
76, homemaker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Sarah Johnson Summerford, 76, of Decatur will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Decatur with the Rev. W.L. Cole officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be in Hartselle City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8:30 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church 30 minutes before the funeral.

Mrs. Summerford died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Summerford Nursing Home. She was born June 21, 1923, in Morgan County to Lee and Dixie Hendon Johnson. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and held every office in the women's division of the church. She was the widow of the Rev. Robert Sheats Summerford. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one son, George Alan Summerford of Littleton, N.C.; one daughter, Janet Summerford Baker of Muscle Shoals; two brothers, J.H. Johnson of Decatur and Paul Johnson of Hartselle; one sister, Nan Campbell of Hartselle; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Larry Anders, Bob Durand, Frank Mangum, Matt Mangum, Jack Riethmaier and Lynn Thompson.

Annie Faye Petty Turner
58, former ConAgra employee

ATHENS -- Funeral for Annie Faye Petty Turner, 58, of Athens will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at People's Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Battles officiating.

Burial will be in Poplar Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. Turner died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at her home. She was born June 23, 1941, in Limestone County. She was a former ConAgra employee and a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Timothy Turner; four sons, Michael Petty, Johnnie Petty, Ronnie Petty and Keith Petty, all of Athens; three daughters, Clara Petty, Tammy Petty and Lynn Petty, all of Athens; two brothers, Lifford Petty of Elkmont and Leo Petty of Athens; seven sisters, Betty Scott and Sallie B. Franklin, both of Athens, Mary Turner, Elizabeth Petty, Dorothy Jean Petty and Linda Fletcher, all of Huntsville, and Dianne Petty of Louisville, Ky.; 26 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Margaret 'Onzelle' Woods
76, homemaker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Margaret "Onzelle" Woods, 76, of Falkville will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Smith and the Rev. Wayne Vincent officiating.

Burial will be in Childers Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Woods died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born March 31, 1924, in Morgan County to William H. and Ella Mae Johnson Mardis. She was a member of Mount View Baptist Church, the widow of Casper Woods and the mother of the late David Alan Woods. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one son, Donnie M. Woods of Falkville; one daughter, Ronna Woods Halbrooks of Falkville; one sister, Lura Hall of Fairview; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ken Brown, Kerry Reeves, David Halbrooks, Marty Bramer, Billy Kyker, Bob Kyker, Steve Whitley and John Blackwood.

Vera Mae Beck
70, retired cook

ATHENS -- Funeral for Vera Mae Beck, 70, of Athens will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Tanner with the Rev. Larry Lockett officiating.

Burial will be in Thatch-Mann Cemetery with Peoples Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Beck died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born March 9, 1930, in Limestone County. She lived in Cleveland, Ohio, for most of her life. She was a retired cook and a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Williams of Athens; and two grandchildren.

William Douglas Biggs

ATHENS -- Funeral arrangements for William Douglas Biggs, 44, of Athens, who died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at his home, will be announced by Spry Funeral Home.

Helen Pauline Brown
72,retired cloth spinner

HUNTSVILLE -- Funeral for Helen Pauline Brown, 72, of Huntsville will be Friday at noon at Laughlin Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Frees officiating.

Burial will be in Huntsville Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at the funeral home.

Miss Brown died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at home. She was born June 3, 1927, in Huntsville to Delmer William and Medie Carolina Herron Brown. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and retired after 44 years as a cloth spinner at Huntsville Manufacturing Co.

She is survived by one sister, Hazel Truitt of Huntsville.

Christine 'Chris' Craig
58, dry cleaner employee

TAMPA, Fla. -- Funeral for Christine "Chris" Craig, 58, of Tampa, formerly of Decatur, was April 18 at Marsicano-B Marion Reed-Stowers Funeral Home.

Mrs. Craig died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at home. She was born Dec. 18, 1941, in Decatur to Elmo and Ruth Roland Rouse. She was a long-time resident of South Tampa and worked in dry cleaning stores in the Westshore and MacDill areas of Tampa for 25 years.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Craig; her mother of Yantis, Texas; one brother, Clayton Rouse of Heath Springs, S.C.; and two sisters, Cecile Headley of Daphne and Edna McCallie of Yantis.
