William Alton Coggin
87, retired farmer

ATHENS -- Funeral for William Alton Coggin, 87, of Lester, will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Scott Pepper officiating.

Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery on Minor Hill Road. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Coggin died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born May 17, 1913, in Limestone County. He was a retired farmer and a member, elder and Sunday school teacher at Leggtown Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Coggin; two sons, Wayne Coggin of Hillsboro and Joe Coggin of Mandeville, La.; three daughters, Carolyn White, Merle Adams and Brenda Stout, all of Athens; two brothers, Woodrow Coggin and James Coggin, both of Ardmore; three sisters, Alma White of Minor Hill, Louise Ferguson of Ardmore and Ida Pearl Solomon of Huntsville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Scott Stout, Billy White, Redus Jackson, Jimmie McNairy, Chuck Owen and Henry White.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Dalton M. Guthrie

MONTGOMERY -- Graveside service for Dalton M. Guthrie of Montgomery, formerly of Decatur, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Green wood Cemetery with Brooks-Cargile Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Guthrie died Saturday, April 7, 2001. The funeral home will announce further arrangements.

Bobby G. Hill
64, carpet store co-owner

Funeral for Bobby G. Hill, 64, of Decatur will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First Bible Church of Decatur with the Rev. Steve Bateman officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Hill died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Parkway Medical Center. He was born Jan. 11, 1937, in Town Creek to Wylie Hill and Bessie Hill. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and co-owner of B&B Installers. He attended First Bible Church. He was the brother of the late Harold Hill and Dorothy Hill.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Hill; two sons, Glenn Hill and Keith Hill, both of Decatur; one daughter, Becky Walden of Decatur; four brothers, Rayburn E. Hill of Decatur, Herbert S. Hill of Killeen, Texas, Jimmy D. Hill of Falkville and Jerry E. Hill of Eva; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Allred, Brian Hill, Rodney Hill, Eddie Hill, Herbie Hill, Tony Hill and Mark Hill.

James Carl Hooper Sr.
86, retired farmer, custodian

MOULTON -- Funeral for James Carl Hooper Sr., 86, of Moulton will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Elliott Funeral Home with the Rev. Amos Hood and the Rev. Darryl Woods officiating.

Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Hooper died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at National Healthcare. He was born Sept. 11, 1914, in Lawrence County to Robert Newton Hooper and Ida B. Jarrett Hooper. He retired as a farmer and a custodian at Hatton Elementary School. He was an avid Indian artifact collector and a member of Okolona Baptist Church of Hatton.

Survivors include his wife, Lila Jones Hooper; one son, James Carl Hooper Jr., of Town Creek; four daughters, Carolyn Horton of Moulton, Audrey Smith of Hanceville, Sue Wilson of Florence and Sandra Lapain of Michigan; two brothers, Buford Hooper of Cullman and Wayne Hooper of Moulton; one sister, Ola Larimore of Moulton; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Smith, Lamar Smith, Michael Smith, Aaron Horton, Stephen DeGraffenried, Burt Bradford, Terry Beddingfield and Jamie Hooper.

Ruth Letson
66, homemaker

MOULTON -- Funeral for Ruth Letson, 66, of Moulton will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. B.L. Hale officiating.

Burial will be in Jones Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Letson died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center. She was born July 2, 1934, in Lawrence County to Roy Nelson and Effie Letson Nelson. She was a homemaker and a member of Jones Chapel Congregational Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Glyn Letson of Moulton.

Pallbearers will be Fermon Grimes, Robert Grimes, Billy Joe Terry, Chris Letson, Bobby Hale and Larry Joe Yarbrough.

Cecil Ray Nave
76, Nave Auto Sales former owner

ATHENS -- Funeral for Cecil Ray Nave, 76, of Athens, was to be today at 2 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with Warren Glass and Mike Davis officiating.

Burial was to be in Limestone Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Nave died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at his home. He was born Nov. 29, 1924, in Limestone County. He was the brother of the late Oliver "Bud" Nave.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Nave; three sons, Lionel Nave, Michael Nave and Jimmy Don Nave, all of Athens; four brothers, George Nave Jr. of Columbus, Ga., and James Nave, Clayton Nave and Ted Nave, all of Athens; four sisters, Eva Chandler of Athens, Evelyn Davis of Huntsville, Merle Green of Opelika and Georgie "Betty" Brazier of New Market; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers were to be Ernest Nave, Milton Green , Bill Green , David Seibert, Grady Chandler and Jason Black.

Sallie Kate Staton
100, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Sallie Kate Staton, 100, of Athens, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Davis officiating.

Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Mrs. Staton died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Athens Convalescent Center. She was born April 27, 1900, in Greenville, Tenn. She was a homemaker and a member of Round Island Baptist Church. She was the mother of the late Lois Brooks.

Survivors include three daughters, Edna Von Boeckman of Ardmore, Okla., Helen Gilbert of Decatur and Donna A. Rush of Birmingham; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Ruby K. White
79, homemaker

Funeral for Ruby K. White, 79, of Decatur will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Shelton Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Coomer officiating.

Burial will be in Johnson Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. White died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born Oct. 29, 1921, in Morgan County to William Mack King and Maggie Woodall King. She was a homemaker and the widow of Alfred P. White.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry O. White and William L. White, both of Decatur; one daughter, Brenda K. Weaver of Wetumpka; one brother, Billy Roy King of Decatur; one sister, Martha Dell McKee of Decatur; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy White, James Weaver Jr., Brad King, Noel King, Brad Burroughs and Josh Nelson.

Dalton Madison Guthrie

MONTGOMERY -- Dalton Madison Guthrie of Montgomery, a past chairman of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce and charter board member and past chairman of the Decatur General Hospital Foundation, died Saturday, April 7, 2001. He was 61.

The former Decatur resident was president and chief executive officer of the Decatur/Hartselle branch of First Alabama Bank and a member of the bank's board of directors. He was involved in a variety of civic organizations, including Friends of Wheeler Basin Regional Library, Decatur Kiwanis Club and Industrial Development Board.

Graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Green wood Cemetery with the Rev. William Vanderbloemen officiating and Brooks-Cargile Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Guthrie died at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery. He was born April 24, 1939, in Montgomery. He was a graduate of The University of Alabama with a bachelor's degree in commerce. He attended Cumberland School of Law and The University of Alabama School of Law, and was a graduate of the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University and Harvard University Executive Management School. He was a former director of the Alabama Banking School at the University of South Alabama and a member of the Commerce Executives Association of The University of Alabama. He was a Steering Committee member of the Morgan County chapter of the American Institute of Banking.

He was named assistant vice president of First State Bank in Decatur in 1967. As the bank grew, he coordinated the merger of First State Bank with First Alabama Bank in 1986. His career with First Alabama Bank included serving as chief executive officer of the bank's Louisiana branches, a position he took in 1993. He retired in 1995.

His civic involvement included serving as a charter board member for Friends of Wheeler Basin Regional Library and Parents and Children Together. He was president and charter director of Business and Friends of the Arts of Morgan County and director of the Decatur Kiwanis Club. He was a board member for Downtown Area Revitalization Effort, Junior Achievement, Calhoun Community College Foundation, Spirit of America Festival and Decatur Convention and Visitors Bureau. He was an advisory board member for Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts and a member of the Finance Committee at the World Trade Center in New Orleans. He was the Morgan County chairman of The University of Alabama Sesquicentennial Campaign, and was a member of The University of Alabama's Million Dollar Band.

Mr. Guthrie was also honored with several civic awards, including the Decatur General Foundation John A. Caddell Award, the Brotherhood Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and the Civitan Club's Outstanding Citizen of the Year. He was inducted into the first annual Hall of Fame at Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, and he was chosen Boss of the Year by the Scenic South Chapter of the American Business Women's Association. He was a Gala IX honoree for the Decatur General Hospital Foundation.

He was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Montgomery and former member of First Presbyterian Church of Decatur. He was the widower of Marilyn Pettit Guthrie, formerly of Hartselle.

Survivors include one son, John David Guthrie of Montgomery; one daughter, Leslie Carol Guthrie LeGrand of New Orleans; one brother, Charlie Horn Guthrie Jr. of Montgomery; and one sister, Carolyn Guthrie Lamar of Montgomery.

Memorials may be made to the Decatur General Hospital Foundation or Wheeler Basin Regional Library.

James 'Jimmy' Rex Birch
48, The Plant Place owner

ATHENS -- Funeral for James "Jimmy" Rex Birch, 48, of Decatur, formerly of Athens, will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with Ed McCracken officiating.

Mr. Birch died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born Nov. 3, 1952, in Limestone County to James O. Birch and Jalena Beasley Birch. He owned and operated The Plant Place in Decatur since 1983. He was a member of the Alabama State Florist Association and Alabama Nurserymen Association.

Survivors include one brother, Joseph Birch of Athens; and one sister, Paula Barnett of Tuscaloosa.

Memorials may be made to Decatur Animal Shelter or Huntsville- Madison County Botanical Gardens.

James C. 'Sonny' Hodges
65, Fruehauf Corp. retiree

ARDMORE -- Funeral for James C. "Sonny" Hodges, 65, of Elkmont was to be today at 2 p.m. at Taylor-Ardmore Funeral Home with the Rev. Willie Earl, the Rev. Tony Boyles and the Rev. Sammy Brister officiating.

Burial was to be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Mr. Hodges died Monday, April 9, 2001, at his home. He was born Nov. 4, 1935, to William C. Hodges and Mary Aileen Hobbs Hodges. He was a retired Fruehauf Corp. employee and a member of Boyd's Chapel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Hodges; one son, Jeff Hodges of Athens; one brother, Hilliard Wayne Hodges of Trinity; one sister, Sara Dean Walsh of Elkmont; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were to be Johnny Frame, Greg Rolin, Derrick Hill, Brandon Hodges, Kenneth Camp and Clint Holt.

Herschel L. Houston
80, water works retiree

CINCINNATI -- Funeral for Herschel L. Houston, 80, of Cincinnati was to be today at 11 a.m. at Dalbert, Woodruff and Isenogle Funeral Home.

Mr. Houston died Friday, April 6, 2001, at St. Francis-St. George Hospital in Cincinnati. He was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Lawrence County to John Lee Houston and Ella Mae Houston. He retired from the Cincinnati Water Works Department as an engineer, was a U.S Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and was a member of Western Hills Church of Christ. He was the brother of the late Bradley Houston, Curtis Houston Gertrude Houston and Ellie Terry.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Evelyn Waits Houston; one daughter, Jessica Dillion of Walton, Ky.; one brother, Carl Houston of Cincinnati; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the Western Hills Church of Christ Building Fund, 5064 Sidney Road, Cincinnati, OH 45238.
