Doyle Harry Peterson

Funeral for Doyle Harry Peterson, 60, of Decatur will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Cagle officiating.

Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends tonight and Wednesday night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Peterson died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born March 29, 1941, in Coffee County to Durward M. Peterson and Pearl Courson Peterson. He was a retired insurance broker and a member of Flint Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jody Peterson; one son, Garet Peterson of Decatur; one daughter, Desiree O'Connor of Decatur; one brother, Clyde Peterson of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Vicki Lyons of Miami; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to American Heart Association, American Kidney Foundation or Hospice of the Valley.

Altha Barkley Shaneyfelt

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Altha Barkley Shaneyfelt, 94, of Hartselle will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Lebanon Baptist Church with the Rev. John Crawford and the Rev. A. Ray Lee officiating.

Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the funeral.

Mrs. Shaneyfelt died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Summerford Nursing Home. She was born Oct. 25, 1907, in Morgan County to Albert R. Barkley and Cordelia Jones Barkley. She was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church, where she served as clerk for 50 years. She worked in medical records at Hartselle Hospital.

Survivors include one son, James Shaneyfelt of Hartselle; two daughters, Vondale Merritt of Hartselle and Rowena Muth of Hartsville, S.C.; one brother, the Rev. Leroy Simmons of Falkville; three sisters, Louise Hardin and Mildred Appleton, both of Falkville, and Dorothy Hudson of Birmingham; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Anders, Don Crow, Mike Garnett, Harold Morris, Bobby Rhodes and Eugene Speegle.

Nellie Jean Brown Smith

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Nellie Jean Brown Smith, 59, of Falkville will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Virgil Crisp and the Rev. J.W. Doss officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Tabor Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born June 8, 1942, in Morgan County to Gilbert Andrew Brown and Eva Louisa Cryer Brown. She was a lifelong member of First Church of the Nazarene. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Elie "Bobby" Smith; one son, Robert Eli Smith Jr. of Falkville; three daughters, Bretha Smith Bauer of Hartselle, Letha Smith John of Decatur and Jeannie Smith Brown of Falkville; one stepdaughter, Sherry Campbell of Montgomery; one brother, Hammond "Buddy" Brown of Lakeland, Fla.; one sister, Louise Brown Copeland of Hanceville; six grandchildren; and one step-grandson.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Brown, Nick Brown, Rusty Hodges, Mike Lawrence, Randall Ricks, Sid Sawyer Jr., Roger Smith Jr. and Carmen Speakman.

Thomas Edward Sullivan

A memorial service for Thomas Edward Sullivan, 71, of Hartselle will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church in Addison with the Rev. John Belew officiating and Shelton Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Sullivan died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Hartselle Medical Center. He was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Morgan County to Milford L. Sullivan and Mary Gertrude Smith Sullivan.

Survivors include one son, Thomas E. Sullivan Jr. of Hartselle; and two sisters, Diann Perry of Danville and June Young of Somerville.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Lester Martin Turner

Graveside service for Lester Martin Turner, 67, of Decatur was to be today at 2 p.m. at Raper Cemetery with the Rev. Don Gentry officiating and Shelton Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Turner died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Aug. 21, 1934, in Morgan County to Alton Turner and Elizabeth Brown Turner. He was a 1953 graduate of Danville High School and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of Walden Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth Turner of Decatur; three brothers, Jackie Turner, Steve Turner and Mark Turner, all of Decatur; three sisters, Sue Turner Maples and Patricia Turner Middlebrooks, both of Decatur, and Deborah Turner Blair of Trinity.

Irvin H. 'Hooter' Benner
HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Irvin Herman "Hooter" Benner, 83, of Eva will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Eva Methodist Church with the Rev. Billy Mosteller officiating.

Burial will be in Eva Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the funeral.

Mr. Benner died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at his home. He was born Oct. 13, 1918, in Texas to Otto Benner and Eva Cain Benner. He was a retired maintenance manager for Chromalloy Company. He was a Methodist and alumni of the Methodist Children's Home in Waco, Texas. He was a World War II Army veteran who served in North Africa and the European Theater.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Gracie Benner; one son, Stephen Benner of Boynton Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Dona K. Benner of Eva and Nada L. Vinson of Fort White, Fla.; one brother, Herschel K. Benner of Red Oak, Texas; one sister, Geneva Lois Wallace of Eva; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Terry Childers, Stesan Henderson, Gary Livingston, George Hudgins, Leon Mosteller and Jimmy Hosteller.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley or Eva United Methodist Church.

Tullie Dean Brown

Funeral for Tullie Dean Brown, 65, of Decatur will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chris Martin officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Brown died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. He was born Aug. 29, 1936, in Decatur to Jack Brown and Learlie Mae Powell Brown. He was a member of Austinville Baptist Church, and owner/operator of Family Billiards for 23 years. During the last decade, he was owner/operator of Brown's Lawn Care.

Survivors include one son, Randall Dean Brown of Decatur; one daughter, Penny Duling of Decatur; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Buddy Barbee, Chris Steeples, Frankie Thompson, Alan Reeves, Ben Thompson, Gabe Thompson, Tony Powell and Glen Powell.

Leamon Harris

TUSCUMBIA -- Funeral for Leamon Harris, 70, of Town Creek will be Friday at noon at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Town Creek with the Rev. Elijah Gray officiating.

Burial will be in Wash Tilla Cemetery with Thompson & Son Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before services.

Mr. Harris died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at his home. He was born June 17, 1931, in Lawrence County to Louie Harris Sr. and Mary Alice Fitzgerald Harris. He retired as a laborer from the former Champion Paper Co., now International Paper Co. He was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Carol Harris; three sons, Leamon Donell Harris, McKenzie Harris and Terrance Harris, all of Town Creek; one brother, Percy Harris of Town Creek; and four sisters, Susie Perkins of St. Paul, Minn., Mary Harris of Muscle Shoals, Hattie Sanders of Town Creek and Ruby Torain of Decatur.

Audrey Mae Hastings

ATHENS -- Audrey Mae Hastings, 93, of Athens died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Athens Convalescent Center. Limestone Chapel Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Howard Marshall Hill

MADISON -- Graveside service for Howard Marshall Hill, 71, of Decatur will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur with Madison Chapel Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Hill died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Oct. 11, 1930, in Stella, Neb., to James Isiah Hill and Lillian Mae Cummings Hill. He served in the U.S. Army in Okinawa from 1948 to 1950. After his military service, he played semi-pro basketball. He retired from Decatur Utilities. He was the widower of Rena Jane Hill.

Survivors include three daughters, Chere Towe, Cynthia Gray and Cathy Sullivan, all of Decatur; three sisters, Helen Mae Rigers of Hawaitha, Kan., Margaret Naomi Zimmerman and Claudia Armbruster, both of Fall City, Neb.; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be George Godwin, David Parks, Charles Moore, Wayne Nicklas, Billy Joe Towe Sr., Paul Chambilas and John Moody.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley.

Carrie Jane Jones

HUNTSVILLE -- Funeral for Carrie Jane Jones, 51, of Decatur will be Friday at noon at Byler Road Church of Christ in Moulton with Freeman Malone Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton Memorial Gardens with Nelms Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jones died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Princeton Hospital in Birmingham. She was born April 28, 1950, in Lawrence County to Mearlon Echols and Bessie Lee Echols.

Survivors include one son, Gerald Cross of Athens; one daughter, Cynethia Bailey of Athens; her mother of Moulton; four brothers, Leon Echols of Vienna, Ga., Lucion Echols of Moulton, Johnny Echols of Albany, Ga., and Freddie Echols of Madison; four sisters, Azalea Echols of Moulton, Marion Bouldin of Huntsville, and Annette Echols Swoope and Claudia Craig, both of Decatur; and five grandchildren.

Vernon 'Buck' McCarty

MOULTON -- Funeral for Vernon "Buck" McCarty, 89, of Moulton will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell Wood officiating.

Burial will be in Acock Cemetery in Franklin County. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon Thursday until the service.

Mr. McCarty died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, a National Health Care in Moulton. He was born in 1912. He was a retired farmer and a member of Moulton Baptist Church.

Paul Petty McCullough

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Paul Petty McCullough, 92, of Hartselle will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Thompson officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. McCullough died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Summerford Nursing Home. He was born Nov. 13, 1909, in Town Creek to Dr. Henry Claiborne McCullough and Annie Sims McCullough. He graduated from The University of Alabama in 1932 with a degree in accounting. He worked briefly for the Tennessee Valley Authority. He was a World War II Army veteran who served in Great Britain in 1943 and 1944. After the war, he worked at Hartselle Wholesale Grocery Company. He was manager of the company until he retired in 1985. He was Hartselle's first florist, operating McCullough's Flowers with his wife.

Survivors include his wife, Lottie Quinn McCullough of Falkville; one son, Paul Petty McCullough Jr. of Nashville; one daughter, Kay M. Blackburn of Nashville; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Brian Brons, James Dimick, Charles Quinn, Charles Smith, Robert Stephenson and Phillip Terry.

Marion 'Mutt' McElroy

HANCEVILLE -- Funeral for Marion "Mutt" McElroy, 86, of Hanceville will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Hanceville Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Hammond officiating.

Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. McElroy died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Woodland Medical Center. He was born Dec. 17, 1914, in Jefferson County to C.V. McElroy and Oma Trucks McElroy. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Ora McElroy; two daughters, Becky Quick and Ronnie Crocker, both of Hanceville; three sisters, Ruth Ziegenbein and Frances Collier, both of Hanceville, and Sue Snyder of Decatur; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Grandsons and nephews will be pallbearers.
