Alberta Hammond
Alberta Lucille Hammond, 85, of Benton, retired from Westinghouse and former employee of Arkansas Highway Department, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Benton. She is survived by three sons, Dave Hagan of Susanville, California, Albert J. Hagan of Brookshire, Texas, and Charles Hagan of Memphis, Tenn., a stepdaughter, Shirley Fluharty of Sherwood, eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral was Friday, Aug. 30, 2002 in the Chapel of Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Custom Funerals & Cremations, with interment in Pinecrest Cemetery.

Ethel Hammon McWhorter, 99, of Lonoke died Aug. 26, 2002. She was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, William Hammon of Mountain View; stepsons, James and Jack McWhorter, both of Benton; a daughter, Abbie Asbille of Lonoke; six stepdaughters, Viola Layfield, Imogene McDade and Genive Mitchell, all of Benton, Juanita Graham of Carlisle, Gladys Hardin of Jacksonville and Ann Pryor of Sherwood; a sister, Mabel Holmes of Memphis; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Billie E. Wood
Billie E. Wood, of Sherwood, died March 5, 2002 at the age of 75. He was a member of Victory Missionary Baptist Church in Sherwood. A Navy World War II Veteran and a Shriner, he was also a lifetime member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a member of the Koen Hunting Club, a former member of the Old Gold 70+ Softball Team, and a Senior Olympic participant. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Holland Wood of Sherwood; two sons, Daniel R. Wood of Jacksonville and David E. Wood of Sherwood; one granddaughter; and a sister, Esther Lee Davenport of Jacksonville. Funeral services were Friday, March 8, at Victory Missionary Baptist Church, Sherwood.

Masako Gray
Masako Hirowatari Gray died March 3, 2002, at the age of 69. She is survived by her husband, Frank Gray of Austin; her sons, Ronald A. Gray of Sherwood, and Roger O. Gray of North Little Rock; daughter, Ronda A. Kaufman of New Hope, Pa.; three grandchildren; and two brothers, Eizo Hirowatari and Akira Kuriama of the greater Toyko, Japan, area. Pauline Coffey Haile, formerly of North Little Rock, died Monday, March 4, 2002. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Magnolia. Survivors include two daughters, Paula Boaz of Magnolia, and Barbara Fronabarger of Madisonville, La.; sister, Jean Epperson of Sherwood; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Madison Beth Herbold
Infant Madison Beth Herbold of Sherwood died March 6, 2002, in North Little Rock. She is survived by her parents, Jason and Micki Herbold; grandparents, Steve and Sandi Griffin, and John and Penny Herbold. John Boyce Capel
John Boyce Capel, 79, of Sherwood died March 7, 2002. He was a deacon since 1963 and taught Sunday School for over 30 years. He served as treasurer of the North Little Rock Optimist Club and was a volunteer for Sylvan Hills Fire Department. In World War II he fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the Army Air Corps. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joanna Tabor Capel; two sons, Randy Capel, of Vilonia and Phil Capel of Sherwood; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at the North Little Rock Funeral Home. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, Grant County. Frances Herndon
Frances Herndon, 91, of Sherwood, died March 6, 2002. She is survived by seven grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She volunteered at Baptist Memorial Hospital for over 20 years. Services were Tuesday at First Christian Church, with interment in Roselawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.

Margie Brockinton
Margie V. Henderson Brockinton, 76, of Sherwood, died March 10, 2002. She is survived by son, Jerry Brockinton of Sherwood; daughter, Shirley Head of North Little Rock; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was a member of Lynch View Missionary Baptist Church. She was retired from Teletype Corporation after 23 years of service. She was a member of Teletype "Retired" Pioneers for which she enjoyed making the Huggy Bears to take to area hospitals. She was very active at Sherwood Senior Citizens Center of which she served on the Senior Citizens Committee. She also served her community by working at her Pulaski County Voting Precinct since 1986. Funeral services were Wednesday at Lynch View Missionary Baptist Church, with burial in Sumner Cemetery. Mickey McKee
Mickey McKee, 72, of Cabot, died Sunday, March 10, 2002. Thompson-Wilson Funeral Homes of McCrory and Wynne were in charge of private family services. He was a retired production manager from both Revere of Newport and Southern Coating and Nameplate of Sherwood. He was a motorcycle enthusiast and belonged to the Arkansas Bikers, Motorcycle Freedom and Arkansas Motorcycle Association. He is survived by his wife, Peggy McKee of the home; one daughter, Laurie Coe of Newport. Memorials be made to the Jackson County or Pulaski County Humane Society.

Jesse Nesbitt
Jesse Nesbitt, 78, of Sherwood died March 3, 2002. He retired from the postal service where he worked for 35 years. He was a World War II veteran. He was one of the founding fathers of the city of Sherwood where he served on its original city council. He started the first youth baseball team in the Sherwood area in 1955 and continued to coach for many years. He was instrumental in forming the first Sylvan Hills/Sherwood Optimist Club and Sylvan Hills High School Booster Club. Survivors include his wife Dorothy Nesbitt, daughter, Diana L. King, son, Bob Nesbitt, all of Sherwood, daughter Debra Tice of Maumelle; four grandchildren; three brothers, Gordon, Charles and Boyd Nesbitt, and two sisters: Louise Vandergrift and Connie Gwatney. Funeral services were March 5, at the Griffin-Leggett-Rest Hills Funeral Home Chapel, with burial at Rest Hills Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of Griffin-Leggett-Rest Hills Funeral Home of North Little Rock.

Effie Gladys Harness
Effie Gladys (Bonds) Harness, 89, of Clinton, died Saturday, March 2, 2002. She is survived by her five children, Faye Nixon of Bee Branch, Lindsey Harness of Mountain View, Wayne Harness of Sherwood, Shirlene Ward of Clinton, and Carolyn Parker of Carlisle; 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jack, Loyd and Bill Bonds, and one sister, Zona Harness, all of Clinton. Services were Tuesday, March 5, at the Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Clinton. Burial was at Holly Mountain Cemetery. Arrangements handled by Roller-McNutt of Clinton.

Senior Airman Corey Gene Vaughan, age 21, of Little Rock, who was stationed in Panama City, Fla., died Feb. 26, 2002. He is survived by his parents; son, Taylor Matthew; a sister, Stephanie Vaughan; grandparents, Mary Sue and John Petty of Mabelvale, Pat and David Wilson of Mabelvale, June and Willis Sr. of Morgan; great-grandmother, Burnelle McArthur of Sherwood. A gathering in Corey's remembrance was held Wednesday, March 6, in the chapel of Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth, 5800 West 12th St., Little Rock. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.

June Evelyn Barker-Brown, 44, of Sherwood, died Feb. 23, 2002. She is survived by her two sons, Adrian and Jeremy; a daughter, Coutenay Ashley Brown all of Sherwood; mother, Lonez H. Barker of Earle; two sisters, Austria Coleman of Little Rock, Jacqueline Love. Funeral services were held at Sylvan Hills High School Gymnasium. Services entrusted to N.B. Rudy M. Schmidt, 81, of Sherwood, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002. He was retired from Russell Chevrolet Company, a World War II veteran, and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Frances (Zakrzewski) Schmidt; one daughter, Sharon Spencer of North Little Rock; one granddaughter; one step-granddaughter; two great-grandsons; one step-great-grandson; and one sister, Rose Stinson of North Little Rock. Cleo Virginia Hamilton Tanzella, age 88, of North Little Rock, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002. Margaret Lucile "Muggy" Benson Schultz, age 44, of Jacksonville, died Feb. 23, 2002. W.D. Walker
W.D. Walker of Sheridan, 66, died Feb. 23, 2002. He was a member of the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, was retired from the Pine Bluff Arsenal and was formerly with the Arkansas National Guard. Gip Coffman, age 71, of Sherwood, died Friday at Arkansas Hospice In Home in North Little Rock. He was a carpenter, a member of Carpenters Local 690, a member of the Moose Lodge in North Little Rock, and a Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Pat; a son, Gary of Jacksonville; a daughter, Treva Roberts of North Little Rock; a brother, Elbert Coffman of Russellville; four sisters, Christine Trigg of Sherwood, Louise Tucker of Russellville, Wathina Williams of Atkins, and Vera Epperson of Morrilton; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral was Feb. 25, at Shinn Chapel in Russellville, with burial in Tate Cemetery near Appleton. Martha Anna Theesen Coulter, age 86, of Sherwood, died Feb. 21, 2002. She was a member of Levy United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She is survived by her husband, John D. Coulter, Sherwood; son, Anthony J. Coulter of Burlington, Ky.; two daughters, Shirley M. Barr of North Little Rock and Marilyn A. Phillippy of Syracuse, Kan.; two sisters, Helen Grothen and Lavina Hoagland of Hastings, Neb.; and grandchildren. He was a member of Sylvan Hills UMC, a member of the Arkansas Ceramic Association, North Pulaski Retired Teachers, North Little Rock Shepherd Center, Arkansas Elementary School Council, Charlie Mae Simon Reading Committee, and associate director of North Central Association for Accreditation. David Williamson
David Donald Williamson, age 57, of Sherwood died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002. He was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. He worked as an electrician for Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in Marshalltown, Iowa, for 24 years, then transferred to Union Pacific Railroad in North Little Rock. He is survived by his wife, Mary; one son, Brian Williamson; one daughter, Brandi Williamson; one sister, Muriel Wilson. Memorial service was held Feb. 9, at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Jacksonville. Cremation arrangements were by Roller-Owens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
