His early years were spent in the Twin Cities area. He graduated from Anoka High School, Anoka, Minn., in 1960. As a young man, he was able to fulfill his dream of being a musician and traveling with a band. Throughout the remainder of his life, he continued to play and enjoy music and entertaining.
While living in St. Paul, Minn., he worked for the St. Paul School System, overseeing the school bus operation and began to pursue his life long dream of his own remodeling firm and cabinet shop. With the partnership of his then wife, Heidi, and brother-in-law, Jerry Johnson, they started the Metro House Doctors, a remodeling and general contracting firm in the late 70s. That led to the restoration of several Victorian era homes in the famed Summit Hill District of St. Paul. John and his partners then opened Old Home Interiors in St. Paul, catering to the needs of the booming restoration climate of the area.
In the late 80s John moved to Arkansas to pursue new dreams. During that time he worked for Cooper Communities in Springfield, Mo. Among the many examples of his talent with woodwork is the library paneled donor wall and the custom trim he made and installed at the Ronald McDonald House of the Ozarks.
John and his wife, Amy, married in 1992, moved to Cherokee Village and founded Homeworks Kitchen and Bath Center, which he operated until he retired in 2005. His work and hobbies were intertwined. Designing and building furniture, restoring antiques, including houses, furniture and automobiles were his passion in life. He was among the original members of the Minnesota Street Rod Association, a member of the Spring River Car Club and a member of the Highland Elks, where he held several officer positions.
He is survived by: his mother, Helen Myren Doday of Coon Rapids, Minn.; his sister, Mary Storken and her husband, Doug of Coon Rapids, Minn.; his wife, Amy Myren of Cherokee Village; son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Kelly Myren of Cherokee Village; step-daughters, Wesley Ann Cooper of Franklin, Ind., Jane Novak and husband Dave, and Jennifer Bingham of St. Paul, Minn.; stepson, Michael Brill of St. Paul, Minn., and grandchildren, Alexander Jay Myren, Elliana Olivia Myren and John Spencer Myren of Cherokee Village, Nichole Leske, Jesse and Jacqui Novak, Justin, Jacob, and Amanda Bingham, all of St. Paul, Minn.; and great-grandchildren, Sophia Novak and Anthony Paul Sanders, niece and nephew, Ryan Frank and Christine Frank and their children, Brittany and Helena of St. Paul, Minn.
Preceding him in death were: his grandparents, Mike and Mary Hudyma and Lauritz and Jesse Myren; his father, George Henry Myren; and stepfather, George Doday, all of Minnesota.
A memorial service will be held at the Spring River Presbyterian Church, Wahpeton Hill, on Feb. 28 at 4:30 p.m.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Tri-County Funeral Home of Highland, Ark.
