Cecil Roy Hill

Cecil Roy Hill, 87, of Clarksville died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Clarksville Health and Rehab.

He was a native of Wilber, Mich., retired truck driver, attended Jamestown Assembly of God Church, and was preceded in death by his parents, Albert M. and Lois Irene Finch Hill; two sons, Alan Hill and Lynn Hill; and two grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Verna M. Beach Hill; one daughter, Christine Ashly of Yuba City, Calif.; one son, David Hill of Highlands, Calif.; one sister, Avis Diehl of Leesburg, Fla.; two brothers, Hollis Hill of Cedar, Mich., and Melvin Hill of Gaines, Mich.; one daughter-in-law, Debbie Hill of Prior Lake, Minn.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Amos Pledger and Rev. Jeff Brewer officiating. Burial was in West Mt. Zion cemetery north of Hartman.

Active pallbearers were John Lyle, Charlie Stepp, Jeff Brewer, Don Brewer, David Hill, and Junior Parrish.

Honorary pallbearer was Jason Hill.

Joel William Martin

Joel William Martin, 62, of Dover died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at UAMS Hospital in Little Rock.

He was a truck driver, son of the late James Frank and Nettie Reed Martin, and was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Lee Hobbs and Velma Mason; and one brother, Cecil Martin.

He is survived by two daughters, Cindy Hardgraves and husband, Leonard, of Russellville and Lisa Nims and husband, Tracy, of Gravette; three sisters, Lucille Willis and Betty Morse, both of Knoxville, and Zelma Boen of Ozark; two brothers, Dale Martin of Coal Hill and Dorsie Martin of Springdale; and five grandchildren, Crystal Hecht and Casondra Kraus, both of Clarksville, Martin Nichols of Russellville, and Austin Nims and Cody Nims, both of Gravette.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel followed by burial in Knoxville cemetery.

Laura Ruth Garrett

Laura Ruth Garrett, 96, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, in Albuquerque, N. M.

A native of Clarksville, she was a daughter of the late Harlow and Anna Williams Garrett, earned a bachelor of arts degree in English and speech from the University of the Ozarks in 1934, followed by spending one year in graduate work, organized the Johnson County Public Library, which was a WPA project, formerly taught English, speech and Latin in public schools in Arkansas and Oklahoma, and during World War II was employed in the war department finance office at the U. S. Army Camp at Joseph T. Robinson. In 1946, she took the civil service exam and continued as a civil servant prior to relocating to Las Cruces, N. M., in 1957, to follow her career at White Sands Missile Range where she was employed by the Corps of Engineers and later with an agency in the missile program that eventually was called TRASANA (USA Tradoc Systems Analysis Activity) and as editorial assistant in the graphics office. She retired in 1978 after 20 years of service.

She was a long-time, active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Las Cruces, N. M., where she served on the membership and evangelism committees. She was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Garrett; three sisters, Doris G. Johnson, Imogene G. Johnston, and Mildred G. Blackmon; one nephew, David L. Johnston Jr.; one niece, Sue Ann G. Foster; and one great-nephew, Grant J. Blackmon.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Martha Johnston, Jean B. Waszak, Kathy Blackmon, Ruth Johnston, Jim Blackmon and David Blackmon; great-nieces and great-nephews, Jason Tribbey, Thad Tribbey, Shannon Jackson, Amanda Blackmon, Laurel Blackmon, Emily Blackmon, Austin Blackmon, and Preston Blackmon; five great-great-nephews; and one great-great-niece.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, in the chapel of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Las Cruces, N. M., followed by burial at Hillcrest cemetery under the direction of La Paz – Graham Funeral Home of Las Cruces, N. M.

Ruby A. Angelo

Ruby A. Aguilar Angelo, 85, of Lamar died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at her home.

She was a native of Westwego, La., former resident of Marrero, La., daughter of the late Lucien Lee Aguilar and Rosina Dantin, widow of Marcus Sylvester Angelo Sr., and was preceded in death by one son, Herman Mickey Boudreaux; five sisters, Alzina Arcement, Irene St. Amant, Lou Tullier, Myrtle Byrne, and Lillian Theriot; and one brother, Alex Aguilar.

She is survived by four daughters, Judy Boudreaux of Spring, Texas, Debe Edwards of Clarksville, Joy Wise of Lamar, and Renee Adams of Riverview, Fla.; three sons, Thomas Boudreaux of Terrytown, La., Dean Blank of Madisonville, La., and Michael Blank of Clarksville; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The time and date of the funeral will be announced later by Roller-Cox Funeral Home. Entombment will be in the Westlawn Mausoleum in Gretna, La.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Theda Ann Sowell

Theda Ann Keathley Sowell, 74, of Clarksville died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock.

She was a native of Conway, daughter of the late Otis Ray and Georgia Ann Oliver Keathley, member of Holland Baptist Church, former employee of Grandy's and the Log Cabin Democrat in Conway, past grand matron of the Order of Eastern Star, and was preceded in death by husbands, Theo Stephen Bates and Wayne Sowell; one son, Randy Bates; one sister, Mary Jane Speights Dean; one son-in-law, Joel Dilbeck; and two stepchildren, Linda Sowell and Doris Watson Evans.

She is survived by children, Susan Holtzman of Phoenix, Ariz., Ramona Bates, M.D. (Brett Herndon) of Little Rock, Jeanne Linn Parker (Steve), Cathy Throneberry Dilbeck of Greenbrier, John Bates (Juanita) of Bee Branch, Fred Bates of Enola, Glen Sowell (Janell Kersey) of Mexico Beach, Fla.; stepchildren, Steve Bates of Spartanburg, S. C., Judy Stubblefield of Shreveport, La., George Sowell (Donna) of Beebe, Connie Atkinson (Carroll Ed) of Houston, Dub Sowell (Carla Sue) of Jena, La.; 28 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one nephew, Jerry Speights of Heber Springs; and one niece, Brenda Speights of Conway.

Funeral was at 10 a.m., Friday, May 22, in Roller-McNutt Funeral Home Chapel in Conway followed by burial in Crestlawn Memorial Park.

William Sims

William C. (Bill) Sims, 71, of London died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Russellville.

He was a native of London, son of the late William A. and Nettie Vinson Sims, an independent truck driver for Willis Shaw Express, former employee of the Arkansas Highway Department and Goodyear Tire store, and was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Jean Sanders Sims.

Survivors include one son, James Sims and fiancée, Teresa Williams, of London; two sisters, Juanita Wilson of Knoxville and Ruth White and husband, Terry, of London; three grandchildren, Brian Sims and wife, Chrystal, of Russellville, Aubrey Sims of Lamar and Lacey Kennedy of Russellville; and seven great-grandchildren.

Burial was Monday, May 18, 2009, in East Point cemetery. Arrangements were by Cornwell Funeral Home of Dardanelle.

Alice Lee Anderson

Alice Lee Cotham Anderson, 91, of Arkadelphia, whose daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Hugh Harrison reside in Clarksville, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009.

She was a native of Dumas, daughter of the late Coke Crittenden and Molly Roberson Cotham, graduate of Dumas High School and continued her education at Central Baptist College in Conway. She was preceded in death by one son, Dr. Rupert C. Anderson.

Other survivors include her husband, Dr. Powhattan Rupert Anderson; one sister, Estelle Bethea of Little Rock; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Shirley Cotham of Lawton, Okla.; four grandchildren, Bryan Anderson of Allen, Texas, Alexis Morris of Greenville, N. C., Kacee Anderson of Hickory, N. C., and Andy Harrison of Holly Ridge, N. C.; and three great-grandchildren, Sincere and Lela Grace Anderson and Mia Anderson.

Graveside services and burial were at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at Oaklawn cemetery with Dr. J. E. Hughes officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Bob Neal & Sons Funeral Home of Brinkley.

Carla Jean Hammer

Carla Jean Hammer, 48, of Lamar, a native of Chandler, Ariz., died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at Jonesboro.

She was employed as an apartment manager.

Survivors include one daughter, Summer Romaine and husband, Philip Werner, of Lamar; father, Carl R. Goodpaster of Florida; mother, Cora B. Marshall Jacot of Lamar; one sister, Debbie Mooney of Lamar; two brothers, Steven Goodpaster of Missouri and Kevin Parrish of Lamar; and two grandchildren, Anthony Romaine and Mack Romaine, both of Lamar.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Amos Pledger officiating.

The body will be cremated.

Danny Lee Rice

Danny Lee Rice, 51, of Hartman died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Summerset, Pa.

He was a truck driver, Pentecostal, and preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Virginia Reynolds.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Ruth Reynolds Rice; one daughter, Jennette Farmer of Ozark; two sons, Daniel Rice and wife, Kathy, and John Rice and wife, Nicole, all of Clarksville; parents, Vernon and Pearl Florence Redd Rice of Altus; one brother, Johnny Rice and wife, Jana, of Coal Hill; six grandchildren, Aaron Michael Rice, Britlee Marie Garner-Hern, Makia Ann Hern, Zachery Colton Rice, Jonathon Rylee Rice, and Aleigh Shyann Rice; one niece, Amanda Rice; and several nephews.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the First Baptist Church in Clarksville with Rev. Ira Taylor and Rev. Kenneth Cash officiating.

Burial will be in Knoxville cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be Darrell Gregory, Mike Reynolds, Johnny Reynolds, Gary Morgan, Herb Holloway and Fred Holloway.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Vaught, Danny Bohannon, Mikey Reynolds, David Bohannon, Doyle Gregory, Don Higby, Joseph Reynolds and Mike Bird.
