Rev. Milton Edmonson

Rev. Milton Edmonson, 86, of Scranton died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at his home.

He was a retired Baptist minister and son of the late George Mose and Mattie Mae Hardwick Edmonson.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Esta Lee Swindle Edmonson; one daughter, Sandra Dix of Conroe, Texas; three sons, Neil Edmonson of Scranton, Wray Edmonson of Grove, Okla., and Ronald Edmonson of Oxford, N. C.; two brothers, Alvin Edmonson of Edinburg, Texas, and Gene Edmonson of Hemphill, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at the Second Baptist Church in Clarksville with Rev. Joe Craft officiating.

Burial was in Lamar cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers were Larry Hagensicker, Randy Vanderpool, Raymond McClelland, Jonathan Ely, Jay Edmonson, and Rodney Brown.

Honorary pallbearers were Charles Morris, Virgil Knight, Herb Stalcup, Wayne Johnson, Tommy Bauer, and Dr. Allen Newcomb.

Philip B. Latimer

Philip B. Latimer, 87, of Clarksville died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.

A native of Wellington, Kan., he was a son of the late Robert Leigh and Annie Daviette Bradford Latimer, 1930 graduate of Springhill (Kansas) High School, member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, member and past commander of the American Legion Bunch Walton Post No. 22, former member of the Fort Smith Symphony Orchestra and The College of the Ozarks Orchestra, a violinist, and a First Class Amateur Ham Radio operator since 1942.

He was the first locksmith and first television repairman in Clarksville and in 1936 began a locksmith business on Main Street in Clarksville where he specialized in television and radio repair. He taught electronics at Clarksville High School, The College of the Ozarks, and Arkansas Valley Technical Institute in Ozark, and was employed in the maintenance department and on the field core line for the Singer Company in Clarksville for 13 years.

During World War II he was a chief petty officer in the Navy where he served in the Admiralty Islands and in the South Pacific as an electronics technican and taught Morse Code. He was responsible for keeping the electronic equipment operating for Hollywood stars including Bob Hope while they were entertaining the troops overseas.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lovenus Lively Latimer; one sister, Ina Sawyer of Gardner, Kan.; and one niece, Ina Joan Jones of Gardner, Kan.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lance Jones officiating. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be James Taylor, Norman Weatherton, John Arthur, Dr. W. R. Scarborough, J. L. Richardson, and Daniel McKinney.

Honorary pallbearers will be David McKinney, Donnie McKinney, J. C. Wheeler, George Amerson, John Wheeler, John Caery, Jim Einert, and Eddie Richards.

Worth L. (Dub) Hill

Worth L. (Dub) Hill, 72, of Spadra died Monday, April 24, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock.

A native of Cornith, Miss., he was a son of the late Benjamin Marshall and Annie Burcham Hill, retired Eureka Brick Company employee, Army veteran of World War II and Korean War, and was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Inez Hill; one son, Harvey Hill; and one daughter, Brenda Kay Hill.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary A. Purdion of Spadra; four sons, Leon Hill, Gary Hill, and Tommy Hill, all of Spadra, and William Hill of Ozone; two sisters, Eva Massey of Coldwater, Miss., and Bertha Dickey of Cornith, Miss.; one brother, Benjamin M. Hill of Ramer, Tenn.; 23 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel with Rev. Clayton Rylee officiating. Burial will be in Holman cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Alan Hill, Eugene Hill, Phillip (Jimbo) Stepp, Marvin Stepp, Gene Harmon, and James Hogue.

Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Hogue, Larry Hogue, John Sanders, and Raymond Hogue.

Doug E. Caldwell

Doug E. Caldwell, 59, of Clarksville died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at his home.

A native of Brinkley, he was a son of the late Gene Caldwell, graduate of Brinkley High School, member of the Clarksville First United Methodist Church and the Clarksville Kiwanis Club, agency manager for Johnson County Farm Bureau at Clarksville for 23 years, and a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Chris Caldwell; three daughters, Stormey Chastain and husband, Lance, of Jonesboro, Taylor Miller and husband, Adam, of Little Rock, and Kelly Cole of Fayetteville; one stepson, Jeff Bias and wife, Kim, of Houston, Texas; one stepdaughter, Vicki Bias of Houston, Texas; mother, Jean Sabatier of Van Buren; two sisters, Brenda Caldwell of Fort Smith and Mary Beth Green and husband, Rick, of Van Buren; one grandchild, Jack Chastain of Jonesboro; two step grandchildren, Trenten and Jackson Bias of Houston, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Friday, March 30, at the First United Methodist Church in Clarksville with Rev. Doug Criss officiating.

Active pallbearers were Keith Eichenberger, Marty Wilkins, Kris Muldoon, Todd Glover, Patrick Williams, Steve Morgan and Jim Carroll III.

Honorary pallbearers were Johnson County Farm Bureau board members.

Arrangements were under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Arkansas Hospice, 2405 East Parkway, Suite 3, Russellville, AR 72801.

Graveside memorial services will be held at a later date at Heber Springs.

Joe F. Hill

Joe F. Hill, 72, of Clarksville died Wednesday, March 28, 2007.

He was born in Turner to Bryan and Edith Hill, attended Marvel schools, was a former resident of West Memphis, employee of Cincinnati Systems in Memphis, Tenn., 25-plus years, and was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Hill; one son, Joe F. Hill Jr.; and one brother, Boyd Hill.

Survivors include his children, Mike and Jeanie Hill of Fayetteville, Pam Crafton of Memphis, Tenn., Linda and Joe Baratti of Crawfordsville, Carolyn Langston of Horn Lake, Miss., and Jamelle Green of Parkin; siblings, Joyce Garland of Memphis, Tenn., Max Hill of Clarksville, Kenneth Hill of Heber Springs, and Marie Lumpkin of Paragould; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial were at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at the Crittenden Memorial cemetery in Marion under the direction of Roller-Citizens Funeral Homes of West Memphis.

Dean W. Blackburn

Dean William Blackburn, 102, of Little Rock, formerly of Conway, died Sunday, March 25, 2007.

A native of the Harmony Community, he was a son of the late Mansul William and Ida King Blackburn, attended elementary school in Harmony and graduated from the College of the Ozarks Academy in 1925. He received a BSA from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 1930, an MS in agricultural economics from Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) in 1931, and a PhD in land economics from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1943. He worked for the U. S. government as the Arkansas land planning consultant from 1934 to 1938 and as land economist from 1939 to 1947. He taught World War II veterans in the on-the-farm training program in Hartman from 1947 to 1952. He and his wife, Lois, owned and operated Blackburn Florist and Nursery in Clarksville and he was professor and head of the Department of Business at The College of the Ozarks from 1952 to 1958. He was professor and head of the Department of Economics, Sociology and Business at Arkansas State Teacher's College (now UCA) from 1958 to 1970.

Blackburn was a member of the Conway First Presbyterian Church where he had served as deacon and elder. He was a founding member of the Conway Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons, serving as its first president in 1971, a member and past president of the Conway Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and a member and past president of the Faulkner County Chapter of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association. As a member of the Conway Noon Lions Club, he was named a Melvin Jones Fellow and received the Lions Club Distinguished Service Award, and a lifetime membership. He had also served as president of the ASTC Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa and the Arkansas Gerontological Association. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Oather S. Blackburn and Jay J. Blackburn.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Lois Standlee Blackburn; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Selma Blackburn of Little Rock; two daughters, Roberta Gifford of Russellville and Idalene Lyford and husband, Bill, of Little Rock; grandchildren, Linda Branch-Dasch and husband, Rob, of Phoenix, Ariz., Richard Gifford and wife, Becky, of Conway, Stacy Blackburn of Little Rock, Lesley Razzell and husband, Tony, of London, England, and Steve Lyford and wife, Candice, of San Diego, Calif.; and great-grandchildren, Hannah and Rachel Blackburn-Parish, Kaycee, Kortni and Wilson Gifford, Charlotte and Sophie Razzell and Gigi Sipiora.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at the First Presbyterian Church in Conway with Rev. Ken Upham and Dr. Richard Gifford officiating. Private burial was in Crestlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Conway Noon Lions Club.
