Myrtle J. Carlton

Myrtle J. Carlton, age 92, of Rosston, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2012, at her home. Ms. Carlton was born October 31, 1919 in Arkansas to Mr. Pyles and Maggie Pack Pyles. She was a faithful member at Bluff Springs Baptist Church.

Ms. Carlton was preceded in death by her parents, Husband: James O. Carlton, Three Sons; Wendell, Douglas, and Dennis Carlton, One Daughter; Norma Holecek, One Grandson; Greg Carlton, One Granddaughter; Dana Cearley, Two Brothers and Three Sisters.

Ms. Carlton is survived by Two Daughters; Dianne Cearley of Nash, Texas and Doris Lyons of Rosston, Arkansas, Thirteen Grandchildren, Numerous Great-Grandchildren, and Two Great-Great Granchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at the Bluff Springs Baptist Church with Bro. Donnie Dillard and Bro. Charles Thornton officiating. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery in Rosston, Arkansas under the direction of A.O. Smith Funeral Homes, Inc. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2012 at the funeral home in Stamps, Arkansas.

RICHARD ALLEN (DICK) BISHOP

Richard Allen (Dick) Bishop, age 91, passed away peacefully at his home near Bradley, Arkansas on February 1, 2012. The elder son of Col. Leonard A. Bishop and Verna Herron Bishop, he was born in Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, New York on August 29, 1920. Dick met his future wife, Marjorie Allen, while attending Ouachita Baptist College in Arkadelphia. They were married on September 12, 1943, in Las Vegas, Nevada, shortly before he was deployed for service in the Signal Corp of the U.S. Army, where he served for two years in the China-Burma-India Theater in World War II. After the war, he and his wife settled in upstate New York. He was employed by Bell Telephone, first as a lineman. He later became the company’s youngest plant manager. In 1951, Dick moved his wife and their two young children south to Arkansas, where he farmed cotton and raised cattle. Five more children were born. He also worked part-time as a Lafayette County Deputy and in 1967 began working for the Arkansas Transportation Commission. He was soon promoted to Assistant Chief of Enforcement, retiring in 1982. After retirement, he continued as a reserve deputy sheriff. He was a member of Bradley Baptist Church, having served as a Sunday school teacher and BTU leader. He was a Boy Scout leader and particularly enjoyed taking Scouts on trail rides, including the Trail of Tears in Oklahoma. A flag-flying patriot, Dick was a life-long champion of the underdog. He was a prolific storyteller, especially about his boyhood in upstate New York, his wartime experiences in Burma, and his adventures as a lawman.

Mr. Bishop was preceded in death by his parents and only brother, Robert Bishop.

He is survived by his beloved wife Margie Bishop; his sons Dickie Bishop and wife, Judy of Mountain View, AR; John Bishop and wife, Patsy of Bradley, AR; Jim Bishop and wife, Mary Ann of Mandeville, LA; daughters, Jeanne Rothwell and husband, Cecil of Bauxite, AR; Ann Rogers of husband Faron of El Dorado, AR; Sally Jones and husband, Mike of Magnolia, AR; and Margie Van and husband, Perry of Bradley, AR; 20 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and many dear nephews and nieces.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 am Saturday, February 4, 2012, at Bradley Baptist Church with Pastor Faron Rogers and Pastor Aaron Leggett officiating, under the direction of Smith Funeral Homes of Stamps, AR. Burial will follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Bradley, AR. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Friday, February 3, 2012, at Bradley Baptist Church. The Family has requested that memorials may be made to the Arkansas Baptist Children’s Home, PO Box 552, Little Rock, AR, 72203.

Rosie Lorene Goodwin

Rosie Lorene Underwood Goodwin, age 86, of Stamps, Arkansas, passed away from this life on Saturday morning, February 4, 2012 at Medical Park Hospital in Hope, Arkansas. She was born on October 14, 1925 to William A. and Mary Catherine Eddy Underwood. Lorene was a bookkeeper and accountant who maintained records for various companies, researched deeds for oil companies, and prepared income tax returns in the area for many years.

Lorene was at her happiest when around children. Whether relatives, friends, friends of relatives, there were always kids around through the decades. She was known to them all as “Rene”, and some even called her “Grandma”.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Edwin Goodwin; three brothers, Fay, Roy, and Ray Underwood; and a sister, Cora Marie McCann.

Lorene is survived by: A Sister, Lucille Bullock of Bossier City, Louisiana; Daughter Linda Simon and husband Carl of Stamps; Son Tommy Goodwin and wife Lucy of Stamps; one Granddaughter, Angel Woods and husband Phillip of Ringgold, Louisiana; three great grandchildren, Matthew, Destany and Gracie; many nieces and nephews; and a huge number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 7, 2012 in the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Stamps, Arkansas with Bro. Ernie Sorrells officiating, and burial following at her husband’s side in Lakeside cemetery under the direction of A.O. Smith Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, February 6, 2012 at the funeral home in Stamps.

Russell M. Bailey

Russell M. Bailey, age 74, of Lewisville, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012 at his home. Mr. Bailey was born May 28, 1937 in El Dorado, Arkansas to Russell Victor Bailey and Johnnie Mable Hood Bailey. He was in the Marine Corps for ten years where he served on President John F. Kennedy’s honor guard. He also worked as a coal miner for eight years. Mr. Bailey was retired from the United Methodist Church after thirty-five years.

Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his parents and one son, William Victor Bailey.

He is survived by; His wife of fifty years, Peggy A. Bailey of Lewisville, Arkansas, Two Daughters and sons-in-law; Debra Johnson & Ted of Hazen, Arkansas, and Sharon Thompson & Raymond of Stamps, Arkansas; Three Granddaughters, Heather Johnson, Melissa Johnson, and Shannon Thompson.

A celebration service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church of Lewisville, Arkansas with Rev. Ron Eldridge officiating. The family asks that no flowers be brought, and in lieu of flowers donations may be made to First United Methodist Church in Lewisville, Arkansas, Arkansas United Methodist Children’s Home, Make a Wish Foundation, or the Lafayette County Dept. of Human Services Food Pantry.

VIRGINIA JO STANLEY RUNNELS

Virginia Jo Stanley Runnels, age 84, slipped the surly bonds of earth to put our her hand to touch the face of God on February 4, 2012, at Maison De Lafayette where she had resided for the past 6 years.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edmon L. Runnels; her parents, Zula and Elos Stanley; as well as her sister, Lorene Stanley Statser and brother-in-law, Ray Statser.

Left to mourn her loss and to celebrate her life, are her two daughters, Lorrie Dodson Brock and husband, Harold David Brock, Jr. in Lafayette, Louisiana; and Vicki Jo Runnels Urban and husband, Gary Urban in Magnolia, Texas; four grandchildren, Michelle Brock Broussard and husband, Troy; David Michael Brock; Rosalynn Urban Norbeck and husband, Jim; and Jennifer Urban Doggett and husband, Christian; her nephews, Stanley Ray Statser and wife, Barbara and Philip Gene Statser and wife, Karen; one great-niece, Lily; as well as four great grandchildren. Jo will be sorely missed by her lifelong friend, Mary Huckabee Mula of New Orleans, LA.

Private graveside services will be held February 8, 2012, at Lakeside Cemetery in Stamps, Arkansas, under the direction of Smith Funeral Homes of Stamps, AR. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Central Baptist Church in Magnolia, Arkansas or Heart of Hospice in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Jo was truly ‘God’s happy Christian’ and will be missed by her many friends. Jo had a remarkable wit and brought joy to everyone she met.

Mrs. Dorcas Ann Bullock May

Mrs. Dorcas Ann Bullock-May, 60, of Mineral Springs, AR. passed away, January 16th. in Dubus Hospital in Texarkana, TX.

She was born January 25, 1951 in Mineral Springs, AR to the late Melbert Houston Bullock and Cleo Deloney Bullock. The youngest of four children, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers; Ivory Parnell & Melbert Houston Bullock II, one sister; Verl Jean Bullock.

She was a member of the Flint Hill C.M.E. Church, served on the Board of Trustees, a Stewardess, Church Secretary. She also participated in multiple community efforts including organizing the Flint Hill Cemetery Committee for the restoration of the cemetery and community.

A 1969 graduate of Howard County Training School, she received her Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in 1972. She first taught school at Beryl henry Elementary School in Hope, AR, followed by many years at Mineral Springs Elementary School. She retired in 1998 from the Nashville School District after 26 years of educating numerous children in Southwest Arkansas. She loved teaching and most of all, challenging her students to do more.

She loved reading, gardening, yard work, and antiquing was her passion.

She's survived by one daughter, Mrs. Melba Ann May Wyatt and one granddaughter, Makenzie Ann Wyatt both of Raymone, MO, one aunt, Mrs. Rebecca Deloney of Mineral Springs, AR, two necies, one nephew, two great-nieces, three great-nephews, and a special friend, Jack Tollett of Mineral Springs, AR.

Funeral services will be held Saturday,January 28th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Northside Church Of God In Christ in Mineral Springs, interment will follow in the Flint Hill Cemetery in Mineral Springs. Officiating Thornton S. Mitchell, assisted by Supt. Veotis Robinson.

Visitation will be Friday 11:a.m. until 4;p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Earma L. Taylor

Mrs. Earma L. “Bolo” Taylor, 91, of Lumber Community near Waldo, AR passed away, January 31st at Redford Geriatric Village in Detroit, MI.

She was born December 30, 1920 in Waldo, AR to Ike Easter and Annie Berry-Easter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband: George “Bull” Taylor, (2)sons: Burbon Wheeler, Jr. & George Taylor, Jr., (1)daughter: Diane Lee, (6)brothers: Roy, Telvis, Leo, Cleo, Luther, Kelly Sr., (7)sisters: Bessie, Mable, Rosie, Alberta, Alaree, Zettie, and Carrie, and (1)grandchild: Annisa Taylor.

She's survived by: sons: Leon Wheeler, James Wheeler, Charles Wheeler, Sr all of Detroit, MI, Paul Revels(Emerson, AR), and Cleveland Taylor(Stamps, AR); daughters: Ms. Peggy Milage, Mrs. Gaynelle Tolbert, Ms. Linda Taylor all of Conroe, TX, and Ms. Brenda Hick (Los Angeles, CA); 37-grandchildren & 55-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday February 8th at 1:pm at Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Stamps, AR with burial following in the Davis Chapel Cemetery in Lumber Community in Waldo, AR

Officiating will be Rev. Roy Owens

The body will lie in state Wednesday 10:am-until service time at Smith Funeral Home Chapel.
