Arlen Wallace “Sug” Ward

Arlen Wallace “Sug” Ward, age 73, resident of Horatio, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 at his home.

He was born June 29, 1930 at Horatio to Samuel Edker and Iva Lorene Parrish Ward; served in the U.S. Marines; was a former ballistic control agent in Pearcy, Idaho; a farmer; and a member of Rocky Comfort Masonic Lodge and Sweet Home Masonic Lodge, and the Western Cherokee Nation of Arkansas and Missouri, and the Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama. He was predeceased by his parents; four brothers, Andy Ward, Eeran Andrew Ward, William Jesse “Bud” Ward, and John Ward; two sisters, Susie Ward and Allie Matthews.

He is survived by one son, Charlie Ward of Horatio; one daughter, Ivy Annette Ward of Richland, Ore.; five brothers, George W. Ward and Allen Alton Ward, both of Horatio, Quinten Dale Ward of Dierks, Doyle Ward and Tillmon Richard Ward, both of Houston, Tex.; two sisters, Orphey Coffman of Brownsville, Tex., and Oma Jean Watson of Pirates Cove, La.; six grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services with Masonic Rites were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19 in Clear Creek cemetery with Rev. J. L. Walker officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home of De Queen.

Odos Duval Long

Mr. Odos Duval Long, age 89, founder of Long's Warehouse Furniture, Orange, Texas died January 14, 2004 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Glenwood, Arkansas on October 22, 1914, Mr. Long was a World War II Veteran serving over 3-1/2 years in the European Theater.

Mr. and Mrs. Long moved to Orange in 1947. Mr. Long went to work for Texaco Port Arthur Works, retired after 27 years service. In 1974, working from his home, he founded Long's Warehouse Furniture, later relocating the store to its current location of 200 S. 15th Street, Orange. He was a 50-year member of the 9th and Elm Church of Christ in Orange, and more recently the Ridgewood Church of Christ in Beaumont. In addition to the furniture store, he was the founder, and still currently active in ODL Properties, LTD, a real estate development company that rented and sold residential properties in the Golden Triangle.

Mr. Long is survived by his wife of 62 years, Melba Long, of Beaumont; two sons, Odos W. Long of Houston, Texas, and Coy Long of Orange, Texas; one daughter, Reatha Long Barina of Beaumont; seven grandchildren, Derrick and Tamara Long of Abilene, Scott Long of Beaumont, Steven Long of Beaumont, Shelley Long of Dallas, Angela and Jimmy Lopez of Beaumont, Tisha Barina of Irving, and Caleb Barina of Beaumont; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Long were Saturday, January 17, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. in the Claybar Kelly-Watkins Funeral Home Chapel, Beaumont. Officiating at the services were Mr. Joe Barina, son-in-law to Mr. Long, Mr. John Davis of the Ridgewood Church of Christ in Beaumont, Texas, and Mr. Ed Green of the 9th and Elm Church of Christ in Orange, Texas. Visitation for Mr. Long was at 4:00 p.m. Friday, January 16, 2004 at Claybar Kelly-Watkins Funeral Home. Graveside services were held Sunday, January 18, 2004, at 3:00 p.m. at Millwee cemetery in Horatio, Arkansas. An additional visitation took place Sunday, 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., at the Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen, Arkansas.

Serving as pallbearers were Mr. Longs grandsons, Derrick Long, Scott Long, Steven Long, Jimmy Lopez, Brent Wilhite and Nathan Beach and honorary pallbearers were Howard Hatchett, Russell Herbert, Mark DeRouen, Famous Byers and Mickey McNamara.

Claud Edwin Sibert Sr.

Claud Edwin Sibert Sr., age 93, resident of Deer Park, Tex., died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 in Webster, Tex.

He was born Dec. 13, 1910 in Norborne, Mo.; graduated from De Queen High School in 1928; and was retired from Texaco after 45 years.

He is survived by two sons, Claud E. Sibert Jr. of Los Alamitos, Calif., and Gerald E. Sibert of Centerfield, Ohio; one daughter, Mary Jane Fairchild of Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a nephew.

Graveside services were held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13 in Redmen cemetery with Rev. Joe Carlton officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home of De Queen.

Ruth Montgomery

Mrs. Ruth Fritzinger Montgomery, age 89, a resident of De Queen, Arkansas died Friday, January 9, 2004 at the Brookewood Nursing Center in De Queen.

She was born March 27, 1914 in Lincoln, Nebraska to George and Flora Collins Fritzinger. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of De Queen.

Mrs. Montgomery was preceded in death by her husband, A. V. Montgomery; a brother, William Fritzinger; and a sister, Betty Mae Nuss.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Vernon and Sammie Young of Phoenix, Arizona and Charles "Nub" and Doylene Young of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law: Irma and Rev. J. L. Walker of De Queen, Arkansas; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Montgomery were held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 12, 2004 in the Mt. Ida cemetery with Rev. Faron Rogers officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home of De Queen.

Joseph Gates Dooley Jr.

Joseph Gates Dooley Jr., age 77, resident of Camden, died Jan. 7, 2004 at his home.

He was a graduate of Camden High School and Arkansas State University in Jonesboro; retired as an accountant from International Paper Company in Camden in 1985; a deacon and elder in First Presbyterian Church of Camden where he was also a former church treasurer and served many years as Sunday school superintendent; a U.S. Army veteran serving in the European Theatre in World War II; and a charter member of the Lions Club of Camden. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph G. and Melba Dooley.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Belle Reynolds Dooley; one son, Joseph Gates (Jay) Dooley III of De Queen; two daughters, Molly Langford and Ellen Bradshaw, both of Camden; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9 in First Presbyterian Church of Camden under the direction of Rev. Ruskin Falls. Burial followed in Memorial Park cemetery in Camden under the direction of Proctor Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Camden.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8 at the funeral home.

Kenneth Ray Dixon

Kenneth Ray Dixon, age 67, resident of Lockesburg, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004 at his home.

He was born Oct. 22, 1936 at Cooper, Tex., to Ernest Clifton and Ivy Lou Ward Dixon; was a veteran of the Korean Conflict; was a retired wholesale manager for Dealers Electrical Supply in Texarkana; and a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was predeceased by his parents; and three brothers, Doug, L.D. and Utah Dixon.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rena Faye Houser Dixon of Lockesburg; two sons, Kenny Dixon and Todd Dixon, both of Lockesburg; one daughter, Vickie Edge of Messer, Okla.; one sister, Margaret Stewart of San Antonio, Tex.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7 in Wright’s Chapel cemetery with Rev. Wesley Blankenship and Rev. J.P. Skinner officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home of De Queen.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6 at the funeral home.

Margaret Windham Atkinson

A memorial service for Margaret Windham Atkinson, 81, of Austin, Texas was held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. January 10th at the Wilkerson Funeral Home. She passed away December 22, 2003 in Austin, Texas. Her ashes were buried at the Redmen cemetery.

Margaret Jane was born September 27, 1922 in Logansport, La., daughter of Minor William and Francis Eleanor Shaw Windham, but lived most of her young life in Arkansas with an older brother and family, Woodie and Kate, and a beloved nephew, Alan Windham who now resides with his wife Marie in Sun City, Georgetown, Tex.

She was a member of the Eastern Star in De Queen, Ark., Chapter 241 for fifty years. She was a registered nurse for many years, serving most of that time at the VA hospital in Little Rock, Ark. She was a member of the Assembly of God church in Austin. She loved her Lord with acts of kindness and was a prayer warrior.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Minor and Francis Windham; brothers, W. H. (Foots) Windham of De Queen, Ark., Johnny Windham of Killeen, Texas, Artis Windham of Waynesville, Mo., and Minor Windham of San Antonio, Texas; and sisters, Ruth Graves of Hooks, Texas and Opal Abbet of Tulsa, Okla.

She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Atkinson of Austin; one brother, Lamar Windham of Chula Vista, Calif.; and five sisters, Louise Hooper and Marie Foster of Shreveport, La., Jo Nell Stewart of Winnfield, La., Edith Watt of Salisbury, Mich., and Louella Gates of Carthage, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by an adopted family, Truett and Ruby Longing of El Dorado, Ark., and by many friends at RBJ Retirement Center where she resided.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made at the Children's Hospital of Austin or a charity of your choice.

Rhonda J. Coon

Rhonda Joyce McKinley Coon, age 46, resident of Horatio, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at her home.

She was born to John and Evelyn Hawthorne McKinley at Garland, Texas, on December 20, 1957. She was a former employee of Poulan, and was a homemaker. She attended the First Baptist Church of Lockesburg.

She is survived by her husband, Bryan Coon of Horatio; her parents; John and Evelyn McKinley of Horatio; two brothers; Randal McKinley of Horatio; and Ronald McKinley of Ft. Smith; one niece.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Rhonda Coon will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 17, 2004, in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Ross officiating. Burial will follow in the Chapel Hill cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m., Friday, January 16, 2004.
