Jutson “Jud” Flournoy Jr.

Marion Jutson “Jud” Flournoy Jr., age 78, resident of De Queen, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 in Christus St. Michael Health System at Texarkana.

He was born Jan. 15, 1927 at De Queen to Marion Juston Sr. and Ola Mae Taylor Flournoy; was a retired butcher; and a member of Kern Heights Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Erma Crawford Flournoy of De Queen; two daughters, Judy Smith of De Queen and Debbie Davis of Nashville; one stepdaughter, Gloria Pressley of Omaha, Neb.; one stepson, Major General Rodney Pressley of Scott Air Force Base, Ill.; one sister, Edlene Lovell of De Queen; eight grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1 in Mt. Ida cemetery with Rev. Rusty Ross officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

Everett Brewer

Everett Brewer, age 95, resident of Gillham, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 in De Queen Medical Center.

He was born June 25, 1909 in London, Ky., to George and Sarah Pruitt Brewer; was a farmer; and a member of Gillham First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Harris Brewer.

He is survived by two daughters, Nadine Frachiseur of Gillham and Edna Martin of Glenwood; one son, Edward Ray Brewer of Texas; one sister, Dora Cooper of Gillham; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27 in Gillham First Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Hill officiating. Burial followed in Gillham cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Doy Denver Diggs

Doy Denver Diggs, resident of Burkeville, Tex., died Monday, Dec. 27, 2004 at Herman Hospital in Houston, Tex.

He was born Feb. 12, 1926 at Provo to Dudley Dekal (Calvie) and Janie Batey Diggs; was a veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific area; and a member of the Church of Christ at Burkeville

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Velma Miller Diggs; two sons, Larry Wayne Diggs of Lufkin, Tex., and Doy Dean Diggs of Newton, Tex.; one daughter, Linda Carithers of Houston, Tex.; two sisters, Trixie Lee Purtell of Hemphill, Tex., and Josephine Preuitt of Jasper, Tex.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Tanner Funeral Home at Newton, Tex., with burial in Miller cemetery at Burkeville, Tex.

Hines Eley

Hines Eley, age 85, resident of De Queen, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 in De Queen.

He was born March 17, 1919 in Nashville to Walter D. and Catherine Norwood Eley; was a retired store manager for Knights Department Store; a former member of the Lions Club; and a member of De Queen Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Norma Langley of Hot Springs.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Eley of De Queen; one son, Greg Eley of LaGrange, KY; one daughter, Linda Eley of Bear, DE; one brother, Guy M. Eley of Irving, Tex.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19 in De Queen Church of Christ. Burial followed in Ozan cemetery at Bingen, under the direction of Latimer Funeral Home of Nashville.

Vernita Kennedy

Vernita Kennedy, a resident of De Queen, Ark., passed away Sunday, December 26, 2004 in Texarkana, Texas. She was born November 3, 1957 to Fred and Ocie Lee French in Foreman, Ark. Vernita attended Tom Elementary School and graduated from Haworth High School. She worked many years at Pilgrim's in De Queen until her health failed. She was a member of the New Zion Baptist Church, De Queen, Ark.

Vernita married Clarence Kennedy and to this union eight children were born. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994, her father and two children.

Vernita leaves to mourn her passing five sons, Travis, Keith, Shannon, Shawn, and Justin, and one daughter, Dana, all of De Queen; her mother, Ocie Lee French, De Queen, Ark.; three brothers, Torris Fred French of West Memphis, Ark., Joe Hendrix French, Tom, Okla., and Willie Jay French, Nashville, Ark.; two sisters, Juanita French, De Queen, Ark., and Bonnie Marie Baker, Broken Bow, Okla.; two aunts, Alice Joshua, Sherman, Texas, and Edna Mae Richards, Tacoma, Wash.; one uncle, Leo Williams, San Antonio, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Services were Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 1 p.m. at New Dora Baptist Church, Tom, Okla. with Rev. James Ezell officiating. Interment was at St. Luke cemetery, Tom, Okla.

Professional services provided by Nunley's Funeral Home, Idabel, Okla.

Charles W. Billingsley Jr.

Charles Winchell “Buck” Billingsley Jr., age 80, resident of Foreman, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004 at his home.

He was born Oct. 28, 1924 at Billingsley’s Corner to Charles Winchell and Ruth Pauley Billingsley; served in World War II with the Seabees; was a retired truck driver; and a member of the American Legion and VFW.

He is survived by two sons, John E. Billingsley of Hope and Joe W. Billingsley of Monroe, NC; three daughters, Rebecca Waller-Collins of Ft. Towson, Okla., Nina Billingsley of Texarkana, Tex., and Ritta May Pell of Haworth, Okla.; one brother, Jim Pauley Billingsley of Billingsley’s Corner; one sister, Nina Stoker of Ashdown; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27 in Billingsley Family cemetery at Billingsley’s Corner with Jimmy Woods officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Diabetes Association.

Lula Belle Manasco

Lula Belle Manasco, age 73, resident of Watson, Okla., died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005 at her home.

She was born August 15, 1931 in Cove to the late Ive Youmans and the late Mary Eunice Counts Youmans and was a factory worker by professsion.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dewel Lowel Manasco; and one brother, Jim Youmans.

She is survived by one son, Larry Gene Manasco of Watson; three daughters, Barbara Dean Kesterson of Hatfield, Mary Ethel Shreve of Watson, and Katie Lynn Miller of Cove; three brothers, Carrol Youmans, Thorny Youmans and Bill Youmans, all of Lebanon, Ore.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005 at Manasco cemetery in Umpire with Bro. Glen McClung officiating, under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.

Lloyd Horace Cox

Lloyd Horace Cox, age 78, resident of Green’s Chapel Community near Dierks, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005 at her home.

He was born Aug. 15, 1926 at Green’s Chapel to Horace and Mary Pearl Graves Cox; was a transmitter engineer for KTAL TV; a member of Green’s Chapel Methodist Church; and an Army veteran of World War II having served in the Philippines. He was preceded in death by a son, Terry Lynn Cox; and a brother, Vaughn Cox.

He is survived by his wife, Floy Morris Cox; one son, Michael Lloyd “Mikey” Cox of Dierks; one daughter, Anita Mays of Dierks; one brother, Hercel Cox of Dierks; one sister, Pearl Dean Cody of Casa; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25 in Green’s Chapel Methodist Church with Rev. Garry Wiles and Jerry Cox officiating. Burial followed in Green’s Chapel cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24 at the funeral home in Dierks.

Oscar B. Tate

Dr. Oscar B. Tate, DDS, age 91, resident of Leavenworth, Kan., and formerly of De Queen, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 in Leavenworth Homestead Assisted Living.

He was born Nov. 7, 1913 at Harrison; attended the Kansas City Dental College in Kansas City, Mo., receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1937; practiced dentistry in De Queen for several years; was an Army veteran; and retired in 1975 from the United States Public Health Service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Maxine Gravitt Tate on April 28, 2003.
