Ethel Marie Nunn

Mrs. Ethel Marie Knighten Nunn, age 69, a resident of Ft. Towson, Okla., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2006 in Texarkana, Texas.

She was born Feb. 8, 1937 in Foreman to Wallace and Dorothy Dean Harrington Knighten, was retired from the Red River Army Depot and was a member of the Ft. Towson Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George S. Nunn; a son, Archie Andrew Gallagher; three brothers; and one sister.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Lee Jacobs, of Ft. Towson; two sons, Frederick Dale Gallagher of Forest City and Gary Nunn of De Queen; five daughters, Linda Collins of Winthrop, Sherry Campbell of Hooks, Texas, Pat Roberts of Conway, Sandy Nunn of Durham, N.C., and Sue Blair of Ashdown; five brothers, Robert Knighten, Bill Knighten, Eddie Knighten, Simon Knighten and Charles David Knighten, all of Foreman; three sisters, Rosie Clark of Calm, Texas, Joy Lockeby of Foreman, and Rachel Kendall of Booneville; 17 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17 in the Crossroads Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Steiner officiating. Burial followed in the Gravelly cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16 at the funeral home.

Lora Mae Barrick

Mrs. Lora Mae Barrick, age 66, a resident of Wickes, died Tuesday, August 8, 2006.

She was born Nov. 20, 1939 in Vandervoort to English Woodrow and Alma Hazel Cornelius Baker, and was a founding member of the Western Arkansas Arts and Crafts Association.

She was preceded in death by her father; and a brother, Frank Baker.

She is survived by her husband, Fred Barrick; mother and step-father, Hazel Baker and Doyle Farless; children; Vicky Titsworth, Lou Vance, Joy Fortner, Paula Cox and Carrie Lydell Anderson; adopted daughter, Connie Harrelson; step-children, Gloria Jean Foster, Barbara Ann Gazeley, Gary Barrick, and Terry Barrick; brothers, Calvin Baker, Larry Joe Baker, and Freddie Baker; sisters, Anita Blair, Marvella Roan, Kathy Kosier, Lavada Richardson, and Carla Wolcott; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 10 at Pleasant Grove Church of the Nazarene at Cove with Bro. Donnie Jewell officiating. Burial followed at the Pleasant Grove cemetery under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.

David Lynn Carden

David Lynn Carden, age 49, a resident of De Queen, died Monday, August 14, 2006 at his home.

He was born January 18, 1957 in Malvern, Ark. to Samuel Elliot and Baby Ruth Jones Carden. He was a journeyman plumber and a member of the State Line Baptist Church.

Mr. Carden was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his mother, Ruth Carden of Haworth, Okla.; his wife, Laura Stutts Carden of De Queen; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Rodney and Leigh Starwalt of De Queen, David and Melissa Carden, Jr. of Forrest City, Ark., and Chuckie Carden also of Forrest City; two daughters, Shawntil Roberts of Harrison, Ark., and April Thompson of Hot Springs; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Virgil and Edie Carden of Chapel Hill, NC, and Hoss and Peggy Carden of Idabel, Okla.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Rita and Larry Nichols of Haworth, Okla., and Martha and Richard Grooms of Dalton, Ga.; 15 grandchildren, Mary K., Jimmy, Ethan, Evan, Peyton, Austin, Ashton, Sadie, Kaitlyn, Tessa, Dakota, Lawson, Austin, Anyston, and Keagon; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Carden were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 18, 2006 in the State Line Baptist Church in Cerro Gordo with Bro. Larry Nichols and Bro. Jerry Taylor officiating. Burial followed in the Pauley cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

The family received friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 17, 2006 at the funeral home.

Margaret Thompson Sharp

Mrs. Margaret Thompson Sharp, age 83, a resident of Daingerfield, Texas, died Tuesday, August 22, 2006 in McKinney, Texas.

She was born October 17, 1922 in De Queen, Ark., to Dr. Clyde Thompson, Sr., and Grace Leeper Thompson. She received a teaching degree from the University of Arkansas where she was an active member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Daingerfield and Daughters of the American Revolution. Charities she enjoyed contributing to were Sevier County Historical Museum and the Clyde and Twila Thompson Trust. Margaret loved to laugh and enjoyed life with her family, friends and many travels.

Mrs. Sharp was preceded in death by her husband, J. T. Sharp, and her son, John Thompson Sharp.

She is survived by one son David Sharp of Ft. Worth, Texas; one granddaughter, Jacqueline Kirkendall, and her husband, Dustin, of McKinney, Texas; one great-granddaughter, Ava Blythe Kirkendall; one brother, Dr. Clyde Thompson, and his wife, Twila, of De Queen, Ark.; one sister, Betty Thompson Reed of Paris, Texas; and two aunts, Carolyn Leeper and Mary Ellen Leichleter, both of Dallas, Texas; one niece, Betsy Glaze; and three nephews, Clark Reed, Stan Thompson, and Larry Thompson.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sharp were held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 26, 2006 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Dorris officiating. Burial followed in Redmen cemetery.

The family received friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, August 25, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to be made to the Clyde and Twila Trust.

Joe Owen Wray

Mr. Joe Owen Wray, formerly of De Queen, died Saturday, August 13, 2005 in Durango, Colorado. He was born August 7, 1926 in Bear Creek Community, Sevier County, Arkansas to the late William Thomas and Bertie Eugene Kindard Wray.

Joe volunteered for the U.S. Navy on January 5, 1944, and served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Beginning in 1949, he worked for 41 years in the oil and gas exploration and construction business, the last 14 years as a barge superintendent in offshore marine pipeline construction. Most recently, in his semi-retirement, Joe worked in maintenance at Sunshine Gardens Retirement Center in Durango. He was a member, 32 Degree Mason, and Past Master of Zwolle (La.) Masonic Lodge #302, and a member of Invisible Friends Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar. Joe also was a member of First Baptist Church of Zwolle, La., and until his move to Colorado, attended Missionary Baptist Church of De Queen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne Allison Wray, and three brothers, Edwin Eugene Wray, Charles Richard Wray, and Billy Thomas Wray.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Charles Wray and his wife, Stephanie, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Joe Owen Wray, Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Bayfield, Colo., Phillip Thomas Correll of Bandera, Texas; four daughters, Casey Correll-Wray Sarkin and her husband, Steffan, of Fayetteville, Ark., Alison C. Hargis and her husband, Garry, of Little Rock, Ark., Suzanne C. Pride of Bandera, Texas, June C. Burr and her husband, Randall, of Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers James Donald Wray of De Queen and Floyd Crockett Wray of Dierks, Ark.; 13 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

During his 20 years in De Queen, following his first retirement, Joe was famous for his ability to grow anything and everything in his vegetable gardens and fruit orchard. He spoiled his family, friends, and neighbors with his bountiful harvest of Kentucky Wonder beans, beets, tomatoes and more, and proved the experts wrong when yearly he grew large crops of lemons and kiwi in Southern Arkansas. When his crops were especially large, he filled up “Old Green, ” his Chevy pickup with the loudest muffler in town, and drove to the Sevier County Courthouse square where he sold (or gave away) his prized produce. Joe recently wrote about himself: “To sum up my life and the driving force that motivated me, I would only say, ‘I stood in the breach’.”

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Wray were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 17, 2005 in the Mt. Ida cemetery with Rev. Joe Carlton officiating under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Paul Gonzales

Paul Gonzales, age 85, resident of De Queen, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005 at his home.

He was born Jan. 15, 1920 at Houston, Tex., to Stevan and Ruth Aguilar Gonzales; was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness; and was retired from General Motors in Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a niece, Janie Gonzales.

He is survived by a great-niece, Athena Markle of Lockesburg; and a sister, Ambrosia Jaure of Dallas, Tex.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.

Guy LaVon McCullough

Guy LaVon McCullough of Dierks, Ark., entered into rest Saturday, August 6th at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock.

He was born in Dierks on February 17, 1938. Shortly after graduating from Dierks High School in 1955 he served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany from 1958 to 1961. After returning to Dierks he joined the U.S. Postal Service where he became Postmaster, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1992. A community leaer his entire life, he owned several businesses and was instrumental in the establishment of the Dierks Chamber of Commerce. Guy was a member of the Church of Christ and during his retirement he helped establish and build the Bismark Church of Christ in Bismark, Ark. He was also a 32nd degree mason. He enjoyed Bible reading, traveling, fishing, building, and most of all, time spent with his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, the late W. C. and Florence McCullough, of Dierks.

His wife Mary (White) McCullough survives him as well as two sons and their families, Keith and Karlyn McCullough of Little Rock, Ark., and Kenneth and Ronda McCullough of Dierks; and his four grandchildren, J. D., Emma, Ethan and Seth McCullough.

Known for his keen sense of humor and friendly smile, he will be deeply missed by all that knew and love him.

Funeral services for Mr. McCullough were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 9, 2005 in the Dierks Church of Christ with Danny White, minister, officiating. Burial followed in the Biggs Chapel cemetery in Nathan, Arkansas, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.

The family received friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, August 8, at the chapel in Dierks.
