Samuel Lafayette Forrest

Mr. Samuel Lafayette Forrest, age 77, a resident of Winthrop, died Monday, November 15, 2010 in the Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas.

He was born June 10, 1933 in Winthrop. He was a retired welder and rancher, a U.S. Army veteran having served in Korea and loved to deer hunt.

Mr. Forrest was preceded in death by his parents, Custer Lee and Bessie Marie Johnson Forrest; his wife, Rosemary Arlene Tyson Forrest in 2001; one son, Charles Samuel Forest in 1958; three brothers and four sisters.

He is survived by three brothers, Steve "Lightning" Forrest and Roy Forrest both of Winthrop and Donald Forrest of Idabel, Oklahoma; one sister-in-law, Johnnie Lou Forrest of Winthrop; a special nephew, Matthew Forrest of Winthrop; and a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mr. Forrest will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 18, 2010 in the Campground cemetery with Audie Dawson, Gary Steiner and Bill Bunting officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 17 at the funeral home in De Queen.

Virginia Lou (June) Warford Holcomb

Mrs. Virginia Lou (June) Warford Holcomb, age 82, a resident of Texarkana, Texas and a former resident of De Queen died Sunday, Nov 7, 2010 in Texarkana, Texas.

She was born November 6, 1928 to Fletcher Floyd Warford and Martha Gertrude Lemley Warford in Sevier County, Arkansas. She was a former nurse, the co-owner of The B and H Cattle Company, a homemaker and a member of the Hicks First Baptist Church in Wilton, Arkansas.

Mrs. Holcomb was preceded in death by her husband Doyle William Holcomb, one sister, Melba Inez Morphew; two brothers, Veryl Oren Warford and Lester Floyd Warford.

She is survived by four nieces, Norma Stinnett of Gillham, AR; Florene (Kenneth) Short, Carolyn (Ray) Frachiseur and Geraldine (Marvin) Smith all of DeQueen; four nephews, Lowell (Carol) Morphew of De Queen; Bobby (Barbara) Warford of Benton, AR; James (Debra) Warford of Antioch, CA; John (Melody) Warford of Temple, TX and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Holcomb will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 9, 2010 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in De Queen with Bobby Warford officiating. Burial will follow in the Millcreek cemetery.

James J. "Yankee" Hersom

Mr. James J. "Yankee" Hersom, age 67, a resident of Ashdown, died Tuesday, November 9, 2010 in the Pleasant Manor Nursing Home in Ashdown.

He was born March 22, 1943 in Mallard, Iowa. He was a retired employee of Little River County, served in the U.S. Army and was a Methodist.

Mr. Hersom was preceded in death by his parents, Everett T. and Lilly Ann Hough Hersom.

He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Wayne T. "Ike" and Barbara Hersom of Wilton, Arkansas; one nephew, Chuck Grimes and two nieces, Karen Thomas and Tonya Foster.

A Memorial Service for Mr. Hersom will be held at a later date in Iowa.

Jasper Elmer Miles

Mr. Jasper Elmer "J.E. - Red" Miles, age 76, a resident of Wickes, Arkansas died Tuesday, November 9, 2010 in the Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas

He was born February 17, 1934 in the Duckett Community. He was a retired logger and truck driver.

Mr. Miles was preceded in death by his parents, James Elmer and Stella Faye Price Miles; infant son David Ray Miles and a sister, Nina Faye Sims.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Miller Miles of 57 years; two sons and daughters-in-law, Preston and Sharon Miles and Jimmie and Teresa Miles; three daughters and sons-in-law, Wilma and Bill Goodman, Linda and Terry Thomas and Nancy and Stanley Jewell; brother and sister-in-law, Peck and Linda Miles; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ola Faye Hood, Dexter and Doyle Turner and JC Sims; 18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Graveside Services for Mr. Miles will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 13, 2010 in the Duckett cemetery with Bro. Chris Burke, Bro. Paul Stuart and Bro. Tim Stuart officiating under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, November 12th at the funeral home.

Vernon Nealy Lay

Mr. Vernon Nealy Lay, age 84, a resident of Vandervoort, Arkansas, died Tuesday, November 9, 2010 in the St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Hot Springs.

He was born February 7, 1926 in Mena, Arkansas. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and was a Sabbatarian.

Mr. Lay was preceded in death by his parents, Ferman and Ida Wever Lay; two brothers, Clarence (Foots) Lay and Albert (Bud) Lay; and one sister, Velma Ruth Thomas.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Emma L. Lay of Vandervoort; two sons, Theron Lay of Hillsboro, Texas and Gary Lay of Squaw Valley, California; two daughters, Barbara Shaw of Cleburne, Texas and Lujean Flanary of Vandervoort; 11 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service for Mr. Lay will be held at a later date.

Cremation arrangements by Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

John Clark Farris, Sr.

Mr. John Clark Farris, Sr., age 90, a resident of De Queen, died Tuesday, November 16, 2010 in the Talihina Veteran Center.

He was born June 6, 1920 in Jefferson, Indiana. He was a survivor of the Great Depression and WWII, Korean and Vietnam War Veteran. He observed the great technological advances of the 20th century and was a contributor of many advances of the telephone age. He was a man of many talents and spurred the ones around him to excel in their endeavors. He accomplished many great things although his beginnings were humble.

Mr. Farris was preceded in death by his parents, Charles O. and Bertha Barton Farris; three brothers and a sister.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gladys Farris; three sons, John Clark Farris, Jr. and his wife Joycelin of Kentucky, Levi Roy Farris and his wife, Hannah of Indiana and Daniel Ramiro Farris of Arkansas; four daughters, Peggy Ann Kessler and her husband, Darrell of Indiana, Brenda Sue Lawson and her husband of Kentucky, Juanita Carmen Arellano Unruh and her husband Scott of Nebraska and Juliet Catherine Burris and her husband, David of Texas and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mr. Farris will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 20, 2010 in the Redmen cemetery with David Smith officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, November 19th at the funeral home in De Queen.

Arthur Lamar Brem

Mr. Arthur Lamar Brem, age 89, a resident of Little River Club, Arkansas, died Tuesday, November 16, 2010 in the St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas.

He was born September 26, 1921 in San Antonio, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. He was an oil field worker and former general manager for Starr Motors in Houston, Texas.

Mr. Brem was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Lamar Brem, Sr. and Ima Carver Ely Brem, and two sisters, Doris Burdette and Claudia McClain.

He is survived by his wife, Marcella Meeks Brem of Little River Club; one son, Michael Brem; two daughters, Melinda Brem and Marla Brem; one sister, Lois Ely all of Houston, Texas; one step-daughter, Sigrid Cox of Little River Club; one step-son, Steve Nilsson of Palm Harbor, Florida; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mr. Brem will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, November 19, 2010 in the Redmen cemetery in De Queen with Rev. Coy Arnold officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 18th at the funeral home.

Devoe "Paw" Bollinger, Jr.

Mr. Devoe “Paw” Bollinger, Jr., age 82, a resident of Horatio, Arkansas, died Monday, November 29, 2010 in the DeQueen Medical Center.

He was born December 31, 1927 in Cerro Gordo, Arkansas. Mr. Bollinger attended Magnolia A&M after serving 4 years in the U.S. Air Force. He served as the postmaster of Horatio for 17 years. He was a life-long cattleman who dedicated his life to improving the image of Arkansas Ranchers. Mr. Bollinger was preceded in death by his parents, Devoe Bollinger, Sr. and Edna Brazil Bollinger, and his sisters Geraldine Beshear, Maxine Pike, and Jean Gibson. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marie Graves Bollinger; one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and David Izzo of Cerro Gordo, Arkansas; two grandsons, Jordan William Izzo and Zachary Cole Devoe Izzo; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Corinne Robinson of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Lou and Jim Johnson of Hot Springs, Arkansas, a number of nieces and nephews as well as a host of many dear friends. Funeral services for Mr. Bollinger will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 2, 2010 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Fred Smith, Phil Smith, and Travis Langley officiating. Burial will follow in the Pauley cemetery. His leadership and service brought distinction to Arkansas agriculture. He served 3 terms on the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission with two of those as chairman. During this time, under Bollinger’s leadership the commission established a calf-hood vaccination program to protect livestock from brucellosis. Today Arkansas is brucellosis free because of his ability to communicate with producers and encourage them to work with state veterinarian in the program for the good of the industry. He mentored Arkansas youth by contributing money and livestock donations to scholarship fundraising. He was among the first to commit to help the University of Arkansas rebuild its animal science program. He continued to work with the U of A and county extension agencies for the purpose of field days and demonstrations so that other producers could learn new forage and production practices.

For more than 40 years he was an active leader in Arkansas Farm Bureau, Arkansas Cattleman’s Association, and many other organizations. He had received numerous awards including Sevier County Farm Family of the Year and University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service Southwest Man of the Year. In 2010, Mr. Bollinger was inducted into the Arkansas Agricultural Hall of Fame. This program, sponsored by the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce and Arkansas Farm Bureau, honors those who have made significant contributions to Arkansas agriculture, as well as community and economic development. Of all of Mr. Bollinger’s accomplishments he was most proud of his family especially his two wonderful grandsons, Jordan and Zach, who he encouraged and inspired every day. He was also blessed and thankful for the many friendships he maintained through the years. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation in honor of Mr. Bollinger.

Connie Taylor Pickett

Mrs. Connie Taylor Pickett, age 95, a resident of Lockesburg, Arkansas died Tuesday, November 30, 2010 in Livingston, Texas.

She was born February 25, 1915 in Vivian, Louisiana. She was a homemaker and a member of the Family of God.

Mrs. Pickett was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ada Alexander Taylor; her husband, Bill Pickett on May 16, 1997 and a number of brothers and sisters.

She is survived by two sons, Jerry Donald Pickett of Lockesburg and Edward Pickett of Milano, Texas; three daughters, Barbara Bohannon and Judy Thompson both of Lockesburg and Vicki Lawrence of Conroe, Texas; 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Pickett will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 4, 2010 in the Old Center Church with Rev. Ralph Staggs officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Center cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, December 3rd at the funeral home.
