Roy Gene Cobb

Roy Gene Cobb, age 71, a resident of Horatio, Arkansas, died Friday, February 28, 2014 in De Queen.

He was born July 6, 1942 in Lockesburg, Arkansas. He was a rancher, a Justice of the Peace on the Sevier County Quorum Court for 17 years and a member of the Horatio Church of Christ.

Mr. Cobb was preceded in death by parents, Tye Raymond Cobb, Sr. and Ruby Lee Conatser Cobb; three brothers, Tye Cobb, Jr., Lewis Cobb and Slats Cobb; and two sisters, Nita Nelson and Maritha Cobb.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol Reese Cobb; one son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Rhonda Cobb of Brownstown, Arkansas; one daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Barry Braden of Horatio; his grandchildren, Taylor and Will Pickering, Brooke Cobb and Brody, Bryce and Brylee Braden; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Cobb will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014 in the De Queen Church of Christ with Virgil Romine and Van Ledbetter officiating. Burial will follow in the Millwee Cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Don Carlton Smith

Don Carlton Smith was born March 7, 1948 in Hughes Springs, Texas to W.T. (Budo) Smith and Ludie Vaughn Smith. He departed this life to a better place on Feb. 27, 2014 in a local hospital with family and friends by his side, at the age of 65 years, 11 months and 20 days.

He left to cherish his loving memory, his wife Alene Jordan Smith; four daughters, Amy Brown of Longview, TX; April Driggers and husband Michael of Daingerfield, TX; Lanette Whitt and husband Thomas of DeQueen; Leslie Ray and husband Greg of Horatio. Three brothers, Kenneth Smith and wife Alyce of Bowie, TX; Robert Smith and wife Glenda of Commerce, TX; Joe Smith and wife Jennifer of Oolagah, Ok. Five sisters, Doris Wacasey of Siloam Springs, Ar., Deloris Price of Mt Pleasant, TX., Debra Dozier of Wolfe City, TX., Shirley Brown and husband Russell of Wolfe City, TX. and Mary Bunch and husband Mike of Sherman, TX. Eight grandchildren, Emmett Ray, Jenna Murphy, Kayla Dykes, Hope, Madison, and Kami Driggers, Laura and Ryan Brown. Three great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jayden Murphy and Emma Ray.

Pallbearers will be Michael Driggers, Greg Ray, Thomas Whitt, Billy John Martin, Emmett Ray and Chris Hale. Honorary pallbearers will be members of THE MASTER’S BUILDERS.

Don was a veteran having served in the US Army during the Viet Nam Conflict. He was very proud of having served his country. Don was an active member of his beloved church, Friendship Baptist Church. His passion to serve the Lord, lead him to become a member of THE MASTER’S BUILDERS who remodel and build churches. He served for many years after leaving the armed forces in law enforcement in East Texas. He was the retired former owner of Smith Quick Lube and Smith Overhead Door.

He enjoyed fishing and camping with his family, restoring antique tractors, driving his antique car, gardening and canning. He had mastered the art of making pecan pies.

Visitation will be at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Monday, March 3, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral service will also be at the Funeral Home on March 4, at 11:00 AM. with Bro. George Frachiseur officiating. Interment will be at West Otis Cemetery following the service.

The family has requested donations be made to Friendship Baptist Church building fund.

Pam Cartwright Gist

Mrs. Mary Pamela “Pam” Cartwright Gist, age 66, a resident of Wilton, Arkansas, died Thursday, February 27th in the Christus St. Michael Hospital.

She was born to L. C. “Buddy” and Shasta T. Reed Cartwright in Texarkana, Arkansas on March 5, 1947. She worked in medical records for various nursing homes, including the Little River Nursing Home, and was an associate of Walmart in Ashdown, as well as a homemaker. Pam was a Baptist, and enjoyed reading, old movies, cooking, re-decorating, and shopping, as well as spending time with family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a daughter-in-law, Sonia Anderson.

Pam is survived by her husband, Bud Gist of Wilton, two sons, Lance Anderson of Foreman, and Trey Gist of Wilton, Arkansas, a daughter and son-in-law, Kristi and Jimmy Purtell of Foreman, eight grandchildren Andrew Miller and Matt Magby both of Foreman, Todd and his wife, Alli Miller of Sheridan, Arkansas, Alex Purtell of Foreman, Josh Purtell of De Queen, Logan Anderson, Sykler Anderson, and Emileigh Purtell all of Foreman, one brother and sister-in-law, Louis Reed and Dyann Cartwright of Bells, Texas, one sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Donald Forguson of Arlington, Texas and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Pam Gist will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, March 3rd in the First Baptist Church of Foreman with Rev. Duane Blackmore and Bro. Chris Clayton officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 2nd from 2:00-4:00 pm at Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

Vernon R. Blair

Vernon R. Blair, aged 94, died Feb. 27, 2014 at his home in Wickes after a brief illness of acute leukemia. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Raymond, daughters Emiko and Julie; grandchildren Vera and Ross Blair and Garrett, Clint, Tyrel and Beau Hennings and two great grandchildren.

Vernon was born June 3, 1919, in Ozark Township (Wickes - Grannis area) to William and Viola Blair. He was the second of five children.

Vernon's family travelled to Whittier, California, during the Great Depression. He graduated from Whittier High School in 1937.

Vernon served in the Navy in the South Pacific (Esperitu Santo and Ponam) during WWII. He repaired hydraulic systems on aircraft from aircraft carriers.

After the war he worked in the oilfields in California and other western states. In the 1960's he helped pioneer drilling in Alaska's Cook Inlet and Swanson River oilfields. Later he worked on the North Slope and Beaufort Sea areas. During his career in the oil industry he worked in Trinidad, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Gulf of Mexico, Colombia, Japan, Indonesia, China, and the North Sea off Scotland. He was considered one of the elite among offshore directional drilling experts.

After retirement Vernon enjoyed talking, ranching, politics, poetry, and his grandchildren. He attended the Cossatot Senior Center and enjoyed gospel singing and visiting.

Vernon has always been here for us. We will keep him in our hearts forever.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Bowser Family Funeral Chapel in Mena.

Hubert Thomas Williams, Sr.

Hubert Thomas Williams, Sr., age 84, a resident of De Queen, Arkansas, died Thursday, February 27, 2014, in De Queen.

He was born January 29, 1930 in De Queen. He received his ROTC commission from Henderson State in 1952, served in Korea and was a captain in the inactive reserves. Mr. Williams was an educator for 36 years as a coach, teacher and administrator. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in De Queen.

Mr. Williams was preceded in death by parents, Hilliard Thomas and Wilma Barnes Williams.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dot Williams; two daughters and sons-in-law, Liz and Terrel Gore of Kankakee, Illinois and Sharon and Levi Pigeon of De Queen; one son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Kelly Williams of De Queen; one brother and sister-in-law, Doyle and Louise Williams of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; one sister, Nita Green of Brownsboro, Texas; five grandchildren, Stacey Jarboe, Jill Gore, Lacey Young, Kimberly Martin, Trey Williams, and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Mr. Williams will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 1, 2014 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Stan Reid, Micah Martin and Brent Young officiating. Burial will follow in the Chapel Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, February 28th at the funeral home in De Queen.

Glenn Edwin Rainer, Sr.

Mr. Glenn Edwin Rainer, Sr., age, 87, a resident of De Queen, died Wednesday, February 26th at his home.

He was born to Lawrence and Mattie Brown Rainer in Lamesa, Texas, on December 16, 1926. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army. He was a retired truck driver, as well as manager of Truck Terminals for over 30 years. He was a Baptist and attended the First Baptist Church of De Queen. Mr. Rainer enjoyed yard work, and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Loretta Merle James Rainer of De Queen, two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn, Jr. and Peggy Rainer of Gardendale, Alabama, and Michael Van and Denise Rainer of Georgetown, Texas, a daughter, Teresa Elaine Rainer of Stamford, Texas, four grandsons, Daniel Rainer of Enid, Okla., Jimmy Rainer of Belleville, Ill, Cameron Rainer, and Kendal Rainer both of Georgetown, Texas, three great-granddaughters, Lorelei Rainer of Belleville, Ill., Mandy Rainer and Bri Rainer both of South Carolina, a sister, Marie Burge of Plainview, Texas, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Mr. Glenn Rainer, Sr. will be held Friday, February 28th from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M at Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen, and cremation will follow.

Dwayne Griffin

Mr. Estess Dwayne Griffin, age 76, a resident of Falls Chapel, Arkansas, died Wednesday, February 26th at his home.

He was born to Estess Lee and Dixie Ann Penney Griffin at Hot Springs, Arkansas, on September 4, 1936. He was a retired carpenter, and a member of the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of Lockesburg. He enjoyed antique cars, car shows, and spending time with his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Norma Kiser Griffin of Falls Chapel, Ark.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry Wayne and Tammye Griffin of Texarkana, Texas, and Steven Michael and Deanna Griffin of Stephenville, Texas, one brother and sister-in-law, Drexel and Rosemary Griffin of Falls Chapel, two sisters, Cookie Penney and Juaween Thompson both of Falls Chapel, four grandchildren, Justin and his wife, Karla Griffin of El Paso, Texas, Brad and his wife, Brandy Griffin of Big Spring, Texas, Kristina Griffin and Steven Griffin, Jr. both of Stephenville, Texas five great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside memorial services for Mr. Dwayne Griffin will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 1st in the Falls Chapel Cemetery with Rev. Wesley Blankenship officiating. In lieu of flowers, you may send a memorial to Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, the American Cancer Society, or Gideons International.
