Jose Gaspar Rojas

Jose Gaspar Rojas, age 26, resident of De Queen, died Sunday, March 21, 2004 in McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel, Okla.

He was born Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1977 in Jerecuaro, Guanajuato, Mexico; was a tree planter for Ouachita Forestry; and a member of St. Barbara’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Kiah Renee Jones of De Queen; his parents, Jose Guadalupe and Alicia Hernandez Tinajero Rojas of La Enrredadora, Guanajuato, Mexico; 11 brothers, Margarito Rojas of Brownsboro, Tex., Guadalupe Rojas, Eugenio Rojas, Benjamin Rojas, Martin Rojas, Saul Rojas and Sergio Rojas, all of De Queen, and Jorge Rojas, Miguel Rojas, Francisco Rojas and Guadalupe Rojas, all of La Enrredadora, Guanajuato, Mexico; six sisters, Francisca Jimenez and Guillermina Rojas, both of De Queen, and Laura Rojas, Maria de Carmen Rojas, Erika Rojas and Elena Rojas, all of La Enrredadora, Guanajuato, Mexico; his grandmother, Maria del Carmen Tinajero of La Enrredadora, Guanajuato, Mexico; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Rosary services were held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 23 in Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Father John Kerr officiating. Funeral services will be held at a later date in La Enrredadora, Guanajuato, Mexico with burial following in Jerecuaro, Guanajuato, Mexico.

Lillie M. Pulliam

Mrs. Lillie M. Pulliam, age 85, resident of Horatio, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at her home.

She was born Nov. 14, 1918 in Polk County to Melvin and Susie Stinnett Pressley; was a member of First Assembly of God Church of Horatio; and was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her parents; two sisters, Evelyn and Ruthie; two sons, Willie Noel Pulliam and Jerry Lee Pulliam; and her husband, Pleze H. Pulliam.

She is survived by two sons, Wayne Pulliam of Texarkana and Henry Pulliam Jr. of Horatio; five daughters, Jennie Edwards of De Queen, Judy Harmon of Horatio, Jenice Gilbert of Dierks, Tricia McNeal of Texarkana, and Janice Applebee of Tyler, Tex.; four brothers, Alvie Pressley of De Queen, Ernest Pressley of Horatio, LeRoy “T. Bone” Pressley of Eagletown, Okla., and Lonnie Pressley of De Queen; one sister, Betty Reed of Cross Roads; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 27 in First Assembly of God Church of Horatio with Rev. J.L. Walters officiating. Burial followed in Horatio cemetery under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

Helen Merisdean Gaddis

Mrs. Helen Merisdean Gaddis, age 81, resident of Dierks, died Thursday, March 18, 2004 in Howard County Memorial Hospital in Nashville.

She was born Thursday, May 25, 1922 in Minden, La.; was a homemaker; and a Baptist. She was predeceased by her parents, Ben and Lois Smith; two sisters; and one brother.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, T. Gaddis; two sons, Thearl Fayne Gaddis of Lubbock, Tex., and Teddy Gene Gaddis of Stinnett, Tex.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20 in Green’s Chapel cemetery with Rev. Mike Watkins officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 9 at the funeral home in Dierks.

Leon Young

Leon Young, age 79, resident of Ashdown and former resident of Mineral Springs, died Monday, March 22, 2004 in the Christus St. Michael Hospital, Texarkana, Texas.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 25, in the Wright's Chapel New Prospect Baptist Church with Rev. Gene Jester officiating. Burial followed in the Wright's Chapel cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

He was born to Lane and Myrtle Dellinger Young at Lockesburg on October 22, 1924. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, was a retired school bus driver for the Mineral Springs School System and was a Baptist.

Survivors include one brother-in-law, five nephews and six nieces.

Jonathan Pettigrew

Jonathan Pettigrew, 21, of Murfreesboro, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Services were scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 21, at Murfreesboro Church of Christ, with Tommy Mounts officiating, burial in Murfreesboro cemetery, under the direction of Latimer Funeral Home, Murfreesboro.

Mr. Pettigrew was born September 29, 1982, at Hot Springs, Ark., the son of Robbie and Carletta Lovell Pettigrew.

He was a member of Murfreesboro Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Alonzo Pettigrew, step-grandfathers, Ed Friday and Clifton Young.

He is survived by his parents, Robbie and Carletta Pettigrew of Murfreesboro, Ark.; brothers, Alonzo I. Pettigrew and wife, Tina, of Farmington, Ark., Ronald D. Pettigrew and wife, Shelly, of Murfreesboro, Ark., and Joshua L. Pettigrew of Monticello, Ark.; one niece, Taighton Pettigrew of Farmington, Ark.; three nephews, Tanner Pettigrew of Farmington, Ark., Tarren Pettigrew of Farmington, Ark., and Alec Pettigrew of Murfreesboro, Ark.; maternal grandparents, Carl and Ferrell Lovell of De Queen, Ark.; and paternal grandmother, Sybel Young of Bossier City, La.

Memorials may be made to Barton Bible Camp or Murfreesboro Church of Christ.

The family received friends at Latimer Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, Saturday, March 20, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Arla Hughes Wheeler

Arla Hughes Wheeler, age 89, resident of Fayetteville, died Monday, March 15, 2004 in Fayetteville City Hospital.

She was born Nov. 17, 1914 in Montgomery County near Glenwood to Walter and Herlic Jester Helms. She was predeceased by her parents; her husbands, Charles Hughes and Dr. Harold Wheeler; and a son, Charles David Hughes in 2000.

She is survived by a daughter, Doris Hughes Cowden of Fayetteville; four stepdaughters, Beverly Dantler of Arcadia, Calif., Lois Dobbs of Anaheim, Calif., Carolyn Russell of Ventura, Calif., and Jan Smeya of McHenry, Ill.; two sisters, Ione Smith of De Queen and Peggy Skipworth of Ashdown; 16 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18 in Gillham cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Jennie Gilbert

Jennie Rebecca Graves Gilbert, 98, retired store merchant of Dierks, went to be with her Lord, January 27, 2004, at Brookewood Nursing Center, De Queen. She was born to Walter and Ellis Graves in Greens Chapel, Sevier County, Arkansas, on December 7, 1905. She was predeceased by her husband Roy Gilbert.

Ma Jennie is survived by one son, Keith Gilbert and wife, Ann, of dierks; four grandchildren, Van Gilbert, Sonya Miller, Steven Gilbert, and Ben Gilbert; and six great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Dierks United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 29, at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in Dierks from 6:00-8:00 in the evening.

Her funeral will be at the Dierks United Methodist Church, Dierks, at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 30, Garry Wiles officiating. Burial will follow in the Greens Chapel cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

William Ramon Roberts

William “Bill” Raymon Roberts, age 73, resident of Brushy Ridge, Okla., died Wednesday, Jan. 21 at Mena Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 18, 1930 in Chocotah, Okla., to the late John and Bertha Parton Roberts; was a carpenter for 47 years; and was involved in the Polk County Singing Convention. He was predeceased by his parents; and his wife, Naomi Roberts, on Aug. 17, 2003.

He is survived by a son, Wesley Roberts of Mena; four daughters, Judy N. Whitaker of Cove, B. Lynn Thomas of Paso Robles, Calif., Sandra Jane Badger of Rocky, and Rhonda J. Smith of Plunkettville, Okla.; four brothers, Bob Roberts, Tony Roberts and Tom Roberts, all of Cove, and Fred Roberts of Benton; one sister, Dorothy Arthur of Hatfield; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24 in Pleasant Grove Church of the Nazarene with Bro. Don Sisk officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Grove cemetery under the direction of Hall Funeral Service of Mena.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wickes Senior Citizens Center.

Jewel Irene Taylor

Mrs. Jewel Irene Luster Taylor, age 79, resident of Grannis, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 in De Queen Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 20, 1924 in De Queen to James Edward and Sallie Bradley Luster; and was retired from Lane Poultry Plant in Grannis. She was predeceased by a son, Owen Lane Taylor.

She is survived by two daughters, Billie K. Canary of Grannis and Linda Stephens of Wickes; one son, Jame Allen Hightower of Conway; five sisters, Dorothy Nipp of Lubbock, Tex., Lena Brown of Fayetteville, Gwen Hughes of Englewood, Calif., Norine Nelson of Ft. Morgan, Colo., and Estalee Simpson of Waldron; one brother, Louis Luster of St. Louise, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26 in Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. O.D. Hobbs officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery.

Treyton Windell Hogg

Treyton Windell Hogg, infant son of Andy and Adriana Bray Hogg of Kirby, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 in Hot Springs.

He was predeceased by his great-grandparents, Lou and Virdean Whisenhunt.

In addition to his parents he is survived by a brother, Brayden Bray; his grandparents, Windell and Judy Hogg of New Hope, and Robert and Cindy Bray of Dierks; his great-grandparents, Alvis and Annette Eastwood of De Queen, Harold and Darlene Bray of Dierks, and Dovie Oliver of Russellville.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 in Pleasant Grove cemetery at New Hope with Kenny Fant and James McRae officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22 at the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in Dierks.
