Tyaleah "Ty" Marlene Scroggins
June 13, 1975 - May 20, 2013

Tyaleah “Ty” Marlene Scroggins, age 37, of Zafra, Oklahoma died Monday, May 20, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas. She was born on Friday, June 13, 1975 in Scottsburg, Indiana.

Ty was a lady that everyone loved and she in returned loved you. She cared about everything that was going on in everyone else's life and worried about herself later. She was a very hard worker who always had a positive attitude; always greeting you with a smile. Ty worked for several years in Mena at the Chopping Block, Limetree Restaurant and Papa’s Mexican Café. She valued and loved life and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her children were her prize; she readily had stories to tell about them. She enjoyed the outdoors, horseback riding, 4-wheeling and going on walks. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church at Octavia. Ty was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her son, Dustin Peppers.

Ty is survived by her husband, Robby Scroggins of the home; her parents, Ray and Julie Leach of Hodgens, Oklahoma; two sons, Kyle Page of Acorn and Josh Peppers of Zafra, Oklahoma; two step daughters, Carmen Baumen of Springdale and Kendra Scroggins of Clarksville; four brothers, Larry Leach of Oregon, Raymond Leach of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Rex Duty of Lexington, Kentucky and Daniel Leach; four sisters, Suzanne Leach of Muse, Oklahoma, Rainy Duty of Louisville, Kentucky, Lucretia Duty and Deborah Bohannon of Jeffersonville, Indiana; two grandchildren, Dillinger and Trey Bauman of Springdale; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 27, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the Trinity Baptist Church in Octavia, Oklahoma with Brother Randy Keiss officiating. Interment will follow in the Rocky Cemetery in Rocky under the direction of Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena. Visitation will be Sunday, May 26, 2013 from 6-8 P.M. at the Bowser Family Funeral Home Chapel in Mena.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Ty Scroggins Memorial Fund C/O Chamber’s Bank P.O. Box 706 Mena, Arkansas 71953.

Mary Jo Sharp Bernard
November 23, 1940 - May 17, 2013

Mary Jo Sharp Bernard, age 72, of Lockesburg, died Friday, May 17, 2013 at the Mena Manor Nursing and Rehab. She was born on Saturday, November 23, 1940 to Lloyd Elliott and Minnie Lea Cannon Sharp in Texarkana, Texas.

Mary Jo was a lovable person and enjoyed talking to her friends. It was said she had “The gift for gab.” She never met a stranger and was always friendly and loved to laugh. She loved to travel and went to every state in the United States except 2 in the lower 48 states. Mary Jo loved to go antiquing and was always look for a treasure. She enjoyed making them look new again. She enjoyed shopping and sewing. She graduated from Texarkana College with studies in Accounting. She was very proud of this accomplishment. She was also proud of her children and grandchildren. They brought her great joy. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed by all who knew her.

Mary Jo is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Leslie Bernard.

Mary Jo is survived by her son and daughter in law, Jimmy and Janette Bernard of Lockesburg; one daughter, Betty Jones of Lockesburg; grandchildren Amy and Daniel Frady of Cerrogordo, Arkansas, Tiffany Jones of Lockesburg, Jody and Kelly Jones of Clarksville, Texas, Justin and Ashley Jones of Ashdown, Dustin Bernard and Hailey Schooley of Lockesburg, Jared and Julia Bernard of Russellville, Jeremy Jones of Lockesburg and Dillon Mock and Charlie Ann Mock both of Mena; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at the Lockesburg Cemetery in the Coulter Addition with Brother Justin Leonard officiating. No public viewing.

A reception will be held after the services at the family’s residence in Lockesburg. All friends and family are invited.

Pallbearers will be Jody Jones, Justin Jones, Dustin Bernard, Jared Bernard, Jeremy Jones and Dillon Mock.

Arrangements are entrusted to Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena.

Arnold Glenn Smart I am a Veteran.
February 6, 1954 - May 11, 2013

Arnold Glenn Smart, age 59, of Grover City, California, died Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the North Brevard Charities in Titusville, Florida. He was born on February 6, 1954 to Victor Otis Smart Sr. and Mary Delula White Smart in Tulare, California.

Arnold enjoyed fishing, hunting, baseball and playing music. He was very musically talented by being able to play any instrument, such as the harmonica, piano, trumpet or guitar. During his high school days at Arroyo Grande High School in California he made the California State Honor Band. Arnold served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. After his military service he went to work as a quality control inspector for numerous nuclear power plants across the United States. He enjoyed his work and had the opportunity to work on a few projects for NASA. He served in the 25th Infantry Division of the United States Army performing with the concert, marching and stage bands. Arnold played in a "Soul Band" at NCO clubs while stationed in Hawaii. One time they were the front band for Rufus Thomas, "Do the Funky Chicken" great song back in the day. Rufus Thomas offered Arnold a job playing trumpet for him but of course, he would have had to go AWOL. Arnold loved his children and grandchildren and in later years wanted to spend as much time as he could with them. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Arnold is preceded in death by his parents, Victor Sr. and Mary Smart.

Arnold is survived by his son and daughter in law, Aaron and Tamara Smart of Mena; his daughter, Alisha Smart of Tucson, Arizona; one brother, Victor Smart Jr. of Paso Robles, California; one sister, Juline L’Esperance of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two grandchildren, Carleigh and Lainey Smart of Mena; the staff and friends at the North Brevard Charities in Titusville, Florida and a host of other relatives and friends.

No services are planned at this time with arrangements entrusted to Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the North Brevard Charities Sharing Center Inc. 4475 South Hopkins, Titusville, Florida 32780.

Foy Earl Varner, Sr. I am a Veteran.
January 15, 1924 - April 20, 2013

Foy Earl Varner, Sr. age 89, of Alder Springs, died Saturday, April 20, 2013 at his home. He was born on Tuesday, January 15, 1924 to Earl and Pearlie Brewer Varner in Hatfield, Arkansas.

After graduating from Hatfield High School, Foy served in the United States Army from May 1943 until 1945. He was injured while serving with the 468th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion. He then served as a Military Police Officer until he was released at Fort Chaffee on December 24, 1945. He marriage his first wife, Georgia D. Smith, August 2, 1942. He moved to Galveston, Texas, and owned the Overhead Door Company for 20 years. He then worked as the president and general manager of Consolidated Systems, Inc. in Galveston and was the past president of Galveston County Contractors’ Association. While living in Texas he served as an elder for the West End Church of Christ and after his retirement moved to Arkansas where he has been a member of the Hatfield Church of Christ. He was a Master Mason, Scottish Mason, Colonel for the El Mina Mini Patrol and he was actively involved in raising funds for the Shriner’s Children’s Burn Hospital for many years. After moving to Hatfield He marriage Doris Matzke on December 30, 1990. He loved wood working, gardening, telling his old war stories and playing county music. Foy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be missed by all who knew him.

Foy is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of 47 years, Georgia Dee Smith Varner; one brother, Troy Lee Varner and one sister, Opal Cannon.

He is survived by his second wife of 23 years, Doris Matzke Varner of the home; two sons and daughters in law, Foy Jr. and Helen Varner, of Jacksonville, Texas, and Carl and Diane Matzke of Madisonville, Texas: four daughters and sons in law, Carla and Ron Broussard Sr. of Mena, Darla and Allen Smith of Mena, Cynthia and Phil Clayton of Chapel Hill, Texas, and Hope Motz of Luling, Texas; three brothers, Walter Varner, Sam Varner and Bob Varner all of Hatfield and one sister, June Fudge of Mena, twenty grandchildren and forty five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hatfield Church of Christ with Ron Broussard Sr. and Kevin Randolph officiating. Interment will follow at the Six Mile Cemetery in Hatfield under the direction of at Bowser Family Funeral in Mena. Visitation will be held Monday, April 22, 2013 from 6-8 P.M. at Bowser Family Funeral Chapel in Mena.

Pallbearers will be Ted Dunavant, Ronnie Broussard, Hunter Lynch, Flint Matzke, Jessie Hedgpeth, Foy E. Varner III and Allen Smith.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Hatfield Church of Christ, P.O. Box 176, Hatfield, Arkansas 71945.

Lila Lynn Bass
September 10, 1934 - May 5, 2013

Lila Lynn Bass, age 78, of Posey Hollow, died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at her home. She was born on Monday, September 10, 1934 to Herman Eddie and Maggie Arizona Batchelor Hamm in Hodgson, Texas.

Lila was very family oriented and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She cared for them deeply and they brought her great joy. Lila attended Union Grove Church at Acorn for many years. She was a Godly woman and tried to live her life the best way she could. For many years, Lila worked at Alf’s in management then also ran the Acorn Grocery Store for many years. Lila enjoyed reading, doing word search puzzles and using the internet. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will be missed by all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ray Bass.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters in law, Gary and Betty Bass Longview, Texas and Steve and Connie Bass of Mena; two daughters and son in law, Vickie and Randall Harrison of Texarkana, Texas and Debra Hall of Texarkana, Texas and Gene Keller of Texarkana, Texas; seven grandchildren; Shannan Robinson of Texarkana, Texas, Kelly Gray of Waco, Texas; Rodney Cook of Dallas, Texas, LaRae Hall of Texarkana, Texas, Jeffery Bass of White Oak, Texas, Jason Bass of Denver, Colorado and Candice White of Mena; fifteen great grandchildren; her special friend Inez Fox of Acorn; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the Union Grove Church at Acorn with Brother Leroy Bass and Brother Roy Bass Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Rock Springs Cemetery at Posey Hollow. Visitation will be Monday, May 6, 2013 from 6-8 P.M. at the Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena.

Pallbearers will be Josh Rice, Dal White, Dawson Ferguson, Josh Bass, Benji Bass, and Tim Bass. Honorary Pallbearer will be Daniel Wade.
