Scott Downs Hamilton, Jr.

Scott Downs Hamilton, Jr. age 77, died July 30, 2005 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born February 20, 1928 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the son of the late Scott D. and Sue McDonnell Hamilton. His father was Secretary-Manager of the Chamber of Commerce in Fayetteville, Hot Springs, Fort Smith and in Little Rock (1943-1954) He grew up in Hot Springs, Fort Smith and Little Rock, graduating from LR High School in 1945. He received degrees from Cornell University, from Brasenose College, Oxford University as a Fulbright Scholar and from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University with a M.A. in Public Administration. He served in Korea and Japan as a lst Lt. in the U. S. Air Force.

Scott worked as a designer for Erhart, Eichenbaum, Rauch & Blass, Little Rock, studied under Frank Lloyd Wright as a Taliesin Fellowship apprentice, worked as a designer for Herbe-LeCouteur in Paris, France and Alvar Aalto in Helsinki Finland. He was a City Planner in Anchorage, AL in the early 60's including the period of the major earthquake. He moved to Hawaii in 1965 where he worked briefly for Donald Wolbrink & Associates as a planning consultant. From 1966 until his retirement, he was a civilian Facilities and Environmental Planner for the Navy at Pearl Harbor. Scott was active in his Waikiki community serving as President of the Waikiki Neighborhood Board, President of Citizens of Hawaii, as a trustee for the Tennent Art Foundation, President of the Conservation Council of Hawaii along with active participation in the distance running and mountaineering groups. He served on the Common Cause National Board, 1973-76, was National President of the Road Runners Clubs of America in 1966 and National Vice-Chair, AAU Long Distance Running Committee, 1970-80. He ran in the Honolulu, Pikes Peak, New York and Boston Marathons, as well as in many other countries. He was a member of Oxford's first Himalayan Expedition to Mount Haramosh in 1957, was a participant in a 1964 mountaineering expedition and the 1990 International Peace Climb on the north face of Mt. Everest.

Scott returned to Little Rock in 2003 in declining health to be close to his family. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church. He was predeceased by his parents and his youngest sister, Susan Hunter Hamilton Graves.

He is survived by his sister, Joanne Hamilton Riddick and her husband, Walter G.Jr., of Little Rock and six nieces and nephews and their children; John S. Haley (Danette) and their daughters, Anne and Colleen, of Little Rock and Bangkok, Susan Haley Adams and her sons, Chris and Andrew, of Eden Prairie, MN, David C. Haley (Lori) and their children, David, Jr., Connor, Lauren and Katherine of Dallas, TX, Kim Graves Vollendorf (Sean) and their sons, Fisher, Simeon and Stone, of Fayetteville, AR; Christy Graves Akol (Dan) and her son, Carter Smith, of Lafayette, California and Scott D. Graves (Holly) and their son, Hunter, of Walla Walla, Washington.

A celebration service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, at Ruebel Funeral Home with burial prior to the service at 9:15 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery. The Rev. Steve Hancock will officiate. The family will be at the Riddick family home following the service. The family gratefully acknowledges the love and support of his many cousins, extended family and friends.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Margaret Elizabeth Weir Jernigan

Margaret Elizabeth Weir Jernigan, 86, of Little Rock, widow of Judge John Tucker Jernigan died Sunday, July 03, 2005. She was born in Donaldsonville, GA to Rev. Robert and Mamie Narcissus Harris Weir. On March 11, 1944, she and John were marriage and later moved to Little Rock, John's hometown, after he returned from WWII. Since 1946 Margaret was an active and devoted member of Second Presbyterian Church. Her deep faith and spirituality, inspired by her father, sustained her throughout her life. She was a member of the Junior League of Little Rock and graciously volunteered her time with the March of Dimes and Children's Hospital. Margaret was a creative person, whose appreciation for art and music was instilled in her at an early age by the artistic women in her family. She was deeply inspired by nature and prayed daily for world peace and future generations.

She is survived by her four loving daughters: Marge Jernigan of Little Rock, Martha Ann Jernigan, Mary McCormick and her husband Daniel, Ellen Ginnaven and her husband Robert, all of Fayetteville, and five grandchildren, John Thomas, William McCormick, John Tucker McCormick, Katherine Ginnaven and Addison Ginnaven. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Second Presbyterian Church. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Second Presbyterian Church or to a charity of your choice.

Leslie Kenneth "Les" Caldwell, Sr.

Leslie Kenneth "Les" Caldwell, Sr. went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at University Medical Center after a long battle with Parkinson's disease and lymphoma. He was born July 31, 1927, the son of Clifton Caldwell and Otto and Irene Caldwell Bates, who all preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a son, Leslie Wayne Caldwell, and a brother, Edward Caldwell.

Les was a U. S. Navy veteran serving during WWII, a member of the American Legion, a sergeant with the Arkansas State Police and later was in the used car business. He is survived by his life partner, Donna Plunkett Gordon, a daughter Jane Fowler McCool of Lonoke, sons Douglas O. Caldwell of Osceola, Leslie Caldwell Jr. of Deltona, Florida, his children's mother Bonnie Caldwell Gibson, 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, a sister, nephews and nieces, a host of family and friends, and his 4-legged canine companion Sparky.

There will be a visitation 5-7:00 p.m. Friday at Ruebel Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Ruebel Chapel, officiated by Rev. David Harris. Burial will follow in Martin Cemetery, Little Rock. Memorials may be made to either the Arkansas State Police Museum, c/o Diana Goodwin, #6 Ranch Valley Rd. Little Rock, 72207, the Humane Society of Pulaski County or a charity of your choice.

Freeda Elizabeth Berry Caldwell

Freeda Elizabeth Berry Caldwell, 85, of Little Rock, died July 31, 2005. She was born in Hickory Plains to the late L.D. and Tranquilla Thompson Berry. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and First Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charles Caldwell, a brother, Opie Berry, and a sister, Oma Heindselman.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Vines and husband Jim; grandsons, Andrew Vines and wife Brooke, and Jonathan Vines, all of Little Rock; and a sister, Loyce Kitchens of Southaven, Mississippi.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Ruebel Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, Arkansas Hospice, or Visiting Nurses of Arkansas, P.O. Box 8526, Little Rock 72215.

Ellen Nelson Bearden

Ellen Nelson Bearden, of Little Rock died on Thursday, July 28, 2005. A lifetime resident of Arkansas, she was the wife of Methodist Minister Robert E. L. Bearden, Jr.. She was born at Russellville, AR to Mary Larch Nelson and Olaf S. Nelson.

She was graduated with an A.B. Degree from Duke University. Previously she attended Russellville Public Schools and Arkansas Tech University, where she served as a member of the Board of Trustees for six years. As a Duke Alumna, for many years she chaired the Little Rock Area Alumni Advisory Committee, where they interviewed applicants for admission to Duke.

A former legal secretary, she was employed with the Arkansas Supreme Court. A member of St. James United Methodist Church, she was honored along with her husband by the church's funding of the Robert E. L. and Ellen Bearden Scholarship at Hendrix College. A Scholarship at Henderson State University also honors the couple. As a former officer in District and Conference Methodist Women's organizations, she received the Life Member designation.

Active in community organizations for many years in Little Rock, she served the Florence Crittenton Home Auxiliary as Secretary, and was a volunteer at the Arkansas Arts Center for the Decorative Arts Forum, the Library and the Committee on Call. She was also a Literacy Training volunteer. Other memberships included the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Arkansas Native Plant Society, Quapaw Quarter Association, Little Rock Women's Golf Association, Arkopolis Questers, Wildflower Garden Club and National Democratic Party. She was active in Arts and Crafts Exhibitions receiving awards at the War Eagle Fairs.

Mrs. Bearden was predeceased by her son, Robert Nelson Bearden in 1980, and by her only sibling, O.W.(Ozzie) Nelson of Russellville in 1998. She is survived by one daughter, Clare Connally and her husband Kirkland, one granddaughter, Kimberly Dee Connally Munoz and her husband, Tony and their children Diego and Isabel all of Dallas, a niece, Nancy Nelson Pittman and her husband Tom and their sons Tripp and Trent of Plano, TX; a nephew, Bill Nelson and his wife, Andrea and their children, Jake, Whitney, Morgan and Jon all of Russellville, and many cousins in the state of Washington and in Sweden.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Little Rock at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with burial prior to the service at 10:30 a.m. in Mt. Holly Cemetery. The Rev. Michael Mattox, the Rev. Fred Haustein, and the Rev. Ed Matthews will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the Bearden Scholarship Funds at either Hendrix College or Henderson State University. The family gratefully acknowledges the Christian love and support of so many, among them caregivers, Florence Pierce and Diann Myron.

Gordon Bartelt

Gordon Bartelt, age 54, of Little Rock, passed away at home on July 21, 2005 after a long and courageous battle with brain tumors.

Gordon enthusiastically embraced life and was an avid outdoorsman. With his wife 'Stan' he enjoyed hiking, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing, biking, and scuba diving. He was an officer and a trip leader for the Arkansas Canoe Club (ACC), Ozark Society, and Sierra Club. Gordon liked helping others learn about paddle sports and was an instructor for the ACC Canoe School for 15 years.

Gordon was born in Ladysmith, Wisconsin on September 17, 1950. After graduating with a B.S. degree in biology at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, he earned a M.S. degree in aquatic biology at Michigan Tech University in Houghton. MI. He later returned to graduate school and earned a M.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Nebraska.

Gordon worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 19 years and was a registered Professional Engineer. In 2002 Gordon and 'Stan' walked away from work and traveled whenever his health permitted. An essential item on these trips was a canoe so that rivers and lakes could be explored.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 32 years Margaret (Stanley) Bartelt, his mother Felecite (Kempen) Bartelt and siblings Pete, Jan, Kevin, and Lee Bartelt. He was predeceased by his father, Elmer Bartelt.

Next spring when the redbuds and dogwoods are in bloom, family and friends will celebrate his life and scatter his ashes at his favorite place in the Ozarks.

Flora Fay Canant Barrier

Flora Fay "Flossie" Canant Barrier, 89, of Little Rock, died July 7, 2005. She was born at home on December 8, 1915, at Pleasant Valley (Perry County), the daughter of the late Ambrose A. Canant and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hay Canant.

She was predeceased by her husband of nearly 65 years, Jack A. Barrier, Jr. She is survived by sons John Michael Barrier and wife Phyllis Mathews Barrier and William Christopher Barrier and wife Nan Selz and daughter-in-law Emily C. Barrier, all of Little Rock. She is also survived by her sister Patricia Allison and husband J. E. "Bud" Allison of Conway, and granddaughters Catherine Emily Barrier and husband James Dugan and daughter Lucy Eleanor Dugan of New Orleans and SevaPriya Sarah Barrier of Portland, Oregon. She was also preceded in death by her sister Ruth Sailor and brothers Brose Canant and Raymond Canant.

She was a graduate of Little Rock High School and completed training as a licensed practical nurse at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Campus. She was a talented seamstress, making special dresses for her granddaughters and also making clothes for underprivileged children.

She was proud of her membership in the Women's Emergency Committee. She was an active member of Pulaski Heights Presbyterian Church, 4401 Woodlawn, Little Rock, where a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13.

Cremation arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the church, Heifer Project International, or Planned Parenthood. The family requests that no flowers be sent.

Barbara Wasden Andrews

Barbara Wasden Andrews, 76, of Little Rock died Friday, July 1, 2005. She was born in Provo, Utah to Leland C. and Violet P. Wasden. After graduating from Provo High School Barbara was employed by Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah where she met her husband, Stanley H. Andrews. She worked for J.C.Penny's from the opening of the University Mall until her retirement in December of 1996.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, daughters, Micki A. Sloan of Lonoke, Rosemary Andrews of Rush City, Minnesota, sons, David M. Andrews and Thomas H. Andrews both of Little Rock, l grandson, Logan H. Andrews and a sister, Carroll W. Christensen of Provo, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents. Barbara was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5 at Evergreen Cemetery in Judsonia. Cremation arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home.
