Rosemary Hurley, 81, of Alpena, died Saturday, Dec. 14, at her home.
She was born April 5, 1921, in Alpena, the only child of Heber Tate and Beulah Plott Tate. When she was 9 years old, she and her parents moved into their newly built home, two houses away from where she was born. She spent the rest of her life calling that house her home. Her love of gardening shone in the large yard she maintained. She provided counsel and inspiration to many young people around Alpena.

She ran the "washhouse," the first and, for many years, only laundry in Alpena. She also worked as a long-distance telephone operator in Harrison for Tri-County Telephone Co. She was a cattle farmer, along with her father and her husband, and she continued this occupation after their deaths. One of her farms has been in continuous operation as a beef farm since around 1900, since it originally belonged to her grandfather, George Washington Tate.
A passionate Democrat, she worked most of her life in support of the Democratic Party, serving to a state level several times. An avid supporter of Alpena, she served several years on the city council.
She served as the secretary of the Alpena Cemetery Association for 28 years, a position she took over after the death of her husband, Keith, who served as postmaster at Alpena for 28 years. Her love of maintaining the cemetery is the reason her children ask that if anyone wishing to make a memorial donation in her honor, please send it to the Alpena Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 67, Alpena, AR 72611.
The family wishes to extend special appreciation to Fern McNinch of Alpena, and to Carroll Regional Medical Center's Home Health and Hospice.
