W. H. (Dude) Blackard

W. H. (Dude) Blackard, 86, of Clarksville died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at Health South Rehabilitation Hospital in Fort Smith.

He was born in the Bethlehem Community, member of Woodland Baptist Church, former Baptist Church deacon, member of the Blackard Quartet for 45 years, retired coal miner, and former owner and operator of Blackard Salvage Shop for several years.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Joyce Blackard; one daughter and son-in-law, Jetta and Charles Martin of Plano, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Mary Blackard of Tahlequah, Okla., and Jim and Morine Blackard of Carrollton, Texas; one sister, Rena Hardgrave of Clarksville; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Woodland Baptist Church with Rev. Sam Howell officiating.

Burial was in Union Grove cemetery under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Joseph Bailey Logan

Captain Joseph Bailey Logan, USN Retired, 68, of Dendron, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in Williamsburg, Va.

A native of Arkansas, Captain Logan enlisted in the Navy in 1948. He attended the U. S. Naval Academy where he graduated with the class of 1953. The majority of his career was spent serving in the Submarine Force aboard the USS Reguin, George Washington, Patrick Henry, James Madison and as Commissioning Commanding Officer of Frances Scott Key. He also served as Commander Submarine Division Sixty Two and later on the staffs of Comsublant, Comsubpac and Cinclant/Cinclantfit. Following retirement from the Navy, he was employed for 13 years for Virginia Power at the Surry Nuclear Power Plant. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, the Submarine League and the Submarine Veterans Association.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Dianna Logan; one brother, Wilson Logan of Aurora, Colo.; and two stepsisters, Linda Venters of Virginia Beach, Va., and Caroline Hawley of Springdale.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Yorktown Naval Weapons Station Chapel with Captain Edward Richardson, USN Retired, officiating. Funeral will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at Fort Myer Chapel in Arlington, Va., with interment and full honors to follow at Arlington National cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 603 Morris Drive, P. O. Box 5009, Newport News, VA 23605.

Mrs. Melba Turman

Mrs. Melba L. Turman, 83, of Clarksville died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith.

She was a native of Bay and widow of Ollie Turman.

She is survived by three grandchildren, Dan Bluff and Brenda Jeffers, both of Clarksville, and Tom Bluff of New Orleans, La.; six great-grandchildren; and one son-in-law, Paul Bluff of Clarksville.

The body was cremated. Local arrangements were under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Ross Eugene Bates

Ross Eugene Bates, 72, of Lamar died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.

He was a son of the late Robert Leo and Anna Mae Ross Bates, World War II Army veteran, member of the Cabin Creek Baptist Church, an auto mechanic and a paint and body employee.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Miller Bates; three daughters and two-sons-in-law, Anita and Lawrence Mooney of Knoxville, LaJune and David Lampkin of Longview, Texas, and Betty Mize of Lamar; three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Shirley Bates and Mike and Regina Bates, all of Lamar, and Roger and Jettie Bates of Dover; four sisters, Vera Beckman of North Little Rock, Jerlene Majorwitz of Lamar, and Mary Gottsponder and Billie Fern Perez, both of Dover; two brothers, Robert Bates and Dennis Bates, both of Dover; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nine nephews; and 13 nieces.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eddie Meharg officiating. Burial was in Holman cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Danny Bates, Tracy Bates, Dennis Lee Bates, David Lampkin, Charlie Wellman, Junior Wellman, and Melvin Wiley.

Honorary pallbearers were Herb Tilley, Travis Miller, Ray Miller, Loy Dean Miller, and Don Stimpson.

Ray J. Williams

Ray J. Williams, 77, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, in Dallas, Texas.

He was a native of Haskell County, Texas, and son of the late J. R. and Louise Scheaffer Williams.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Rozan Reed Williams, formerly of Hartman; one son, Ty Williams; one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Randall Jones; one brother, John F. Williams; two grandsons, Justin Jones and Jason Jones; mother-in-law, Mary Beth Reed, formerly of Hartman; one niece, Joyce Cole; one nephew, Ron Bridges; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral was at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, at Eastgate Funeral Home Chapel in Garland, Texas, with Rev. Steve Bridges and Rev. Ron Bridges officiating.

Graveside services and burial were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the Hartman cemetery.

Thomas D. Burley

Thomas D. Burley, 92, of Clarksville died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at Clarksville Convalescent Home.

He was a Baptist, retired brick company foreman, son of the late David and Molly Burley, and was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Dovie Elkins Burley, and one son, Thomas Wilbern Burley.

He is survived by two sons, Bill Burley of Clarksville and Jack Burley of Malvern; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one niece, Reba Laybourne of San Pablo, Calif.

Graveside services and burial were at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at the Harmony cemetery with Rev. Amos Pledger officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Ronald P. Davis

Ronald P. Davis, 76, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Tri Cities Hospice House in Kennewick, Wash.

A native of Lamar, he was a son of the late Newton C. and Norma O. Pearson Davis, former resident of Olympia, Ephrata and Seattle, Wash., former insurance salesman, insurance agency owner, carpenter, and Strand Construction employee, and a member of the Church of Christ, Carpenters Local 131, and the Laryngectomy Support Group of Pasco, Wash.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Kathryn Daniel Davis; four children, Mrs. Jake (Dot) Bollinger of Wenatchee, Wash., Ronald P. Davis Jr. of Rancho Marage, Calif., Daniel N. Davis of Bellevue, Wash., and Mona Vallefuoco of Hansville, Wash.; one sister, Nerine Hodges of Kennewick, Wash.; two brothers, Ed Davis of Olympia, Wash., and Leland Davis of Kennewick, Wash.; ten grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Mueller Tri Cities Funeral Home Chapel in Kennewick, Wash.

Garland O. Johnson

Garland O. Johnson, 80, of Kansas City, Kan., formerly of Clarksville, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at Bethany Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

A native of the Lone Pine Community, he was a son of the late George and Vestal Odom Johnson, member of the Lone Pine Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Navy veteran of World War II, and was a warehouse specialist for Hallmark for 31 years prior to retiring.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Willa Baskin Johnson; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary L. and Norma Johnson of Eureka Springs; one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and John Schaffer of Lakeside, Calif.; one granddaughter and spouse, Robyn and Steve Bowman of Lakeside, Calif.; one grandson, Joshua Schaffer of Lakeside, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren, Dalton Bowman, Rachel Bowman, and Lane Schaffer, all of Lakeside, Calif.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, at Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel with Burley King officiating. Burial will be in Lone Pine cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Buel Porter, John Schaffer, Joshua Schaffer, Jay Clark Baskin, Steve Bowman, and Abe Laster Jr.

Memorials may be made to the Lone Pine cemetery Association, 306 Thompson Street, Clarksville, AR 72830 or the Harmony cemetery Association, 803 Sevier Street, Clarksville, AR 72830.
