N. Baxter Cater

N. Baxter Cater, 93, of Hartman died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Countryside Manor Nursing Home.

He was a native of Excelsior, son of the late George D. and Mamie McWilliams Cater, a retired farmer, World War II Army Air Corps veteran, and member of the Hays Chapel Methodist Church, American Legion Bunch Walton Post No. 22, and the Johnson County Riding Club.

He is survived by one nephew, Bill Walton of Columbus, Ga.; and two nieces, Mamie Lou Dunn of Harlingen, Texas, and Carol Benge of Seattle, Wash.

Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at the Hays Chapel Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Rink officiating.

Burial will be in the Hays Chapel cemetery under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Bill Nowotny, Jimmy Morris, Dale Meek, Donald Meek, Bob Hurley, and Bobby Lewis

Mrs. Bessie Frost

Mrs. Bessie Florence Pitts Frost, 78, of Clarksville died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.

She was a charter member of Stillwell Bible Baptist Church, widow of King Frost, and daughter of the late Levi and Ida Bell Bash Pitts.

She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Shirlene and Wendell Sears of Clarksville and Loma Sexton of Clarksville; one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Susie Frost of London; two sisters, Doris Wilson and Gerta Collins, both of Florida; one sister-in-law, Gertrude Pitts of Lamar; one brother-in-law, Mervin Frost of Clarksville; seven grandchildren, Mike Sexton of Clarksville, Lance Sexton of Springdale, Joann Sexton Bartlett of Clarksville, Steve Sears of Pottsville, Stan Sears of Great Falls, Mont., Donny Frost of Clarksville and Tammy Frost Brown of Lamar; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Roller-Cox Funeral Chapel with Rev. Amos Pledger and Rev. Jim Goodman officiating. Burial was in Lone Pine cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mike Sexton, Lance Sexton, Stan Sears, Donny Frost, Jimmy Frost, and Steve Sears.

Mrs. Betty McCollum

Mrs. Betty (Tiney) McCollum, 72, of Tulsa, Okla., died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Hartford.

She was a native of Hartman, daughter of the late Emil and Mamie Beumer Oberste, widow of Hugh L. (Mac) McCollum, and a member of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Tulsa, Okla.

Survivors include one daughter, Gloria Snider of Hartford; two sons, Phillip McCollum of Chicago, Ill., and Daniel McCollum of St. Charles, Ill.; four sisters, Vera Stewart of Arlington, Texas, Jeanette Kendall and Bernice Hubbard, both of Tulsa, Okla., and Evelyn Clough of North Little Rock; two brothers, Danny Oberste of Sallisaw, Okla., and Mickey Oberste of Tulsa, Okla.; seven grandchildren, David Snider of Fort Smith, Dennis Snider of Waukesha, Wis., Laura Hicks of Waldron, Katie Snider of Hartford, and Sarah McCollum, Matthew McCollum, and Patrick McCollum, all of St. Charles, Ill.; and two great-grandchildren.

Rosary was at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel. Funeral mass was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. William Wewers, O.S.B., officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery at Hartman.

Pallbearers were Gary Clough, Dennis Clough, Rick Oberste, Mark Oberste, Tim Hardin, and Steve Hubbard.

Mrs. Bernice E. Steele

Mrs. Bernice E. Steele, 78, of Clarksville died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.

She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, retired licensed practical nurse, daughter of the late Bertrum and Hattie Keppel Alison, and widow of Bruce W. Steele.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Betty Kelly and Raymond and Kathy Evans, all of Grand Island, Neb.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at Roller-Cox Chapel with Rev. Glenn Newton officiating. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Raymond Evans, Gary Dorney, Terry Kelley, Tracy Watts, Dennis Kelly, and Arthur McKittrick.

Memorials may be made to the Church of the Nazarene.

Earl O. Brown

Earl O. Brown, 99, of Clarksville died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Clarksville, son of the late John Monroe and Mary Jane Gilmore Brown, retired coal miner, member of the United Mine Workers Association, and was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Harris Brown, one brother, John M. Brown, and three sisters, Victoria Laneer, Effie Garrett, and Della Stallings.

He is survived by three nephews, Cecil Brown of Coal Hill, Dan Garrett of Clarksville, and Chester Garrett of Hot Springs; one niece, Wilma Mincher of Amarillo, Texas; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Zeiler officiating. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Billy Teal, Milton Teal, Mark Hatchett, Bobby Hatchett, Robert Bartlett, and Jack Cecil.

Mrs. Elsie E. Potts

Mrs. Elsie E. Potts, 74, of Ola, mother of Glenda Terry of Hagarville, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at Chambers Memorial Hospital in Danville.

She was a native of Hollis, daughter of the late Virgil and Lena Wells Douthit, widow of Limmie Potts, member of the Ola Assembly of God Church, and was preceded in death by one son, Charles Potts, and one brother, Eugene Douthit.

Survivors include two other daughters, Wanda Young of Forest Hill, La., and Marilyn Reeves of Fort Smith; one brother, George Hawks; and eight grandchildren, Bert Young, Tiffany Young, Alica Terry, Allison Terry, April Turnbow, Katlyn Turnbow, Kolyn Turnbow, and Shelby Potts.

Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at the Ola Assembly of God Church with Rev. Norman Chenowith officiating.

Burial was in the Sandlin cemetery at Ola under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service of Ola

Hayley Renee Syfert

Hayley Renee Syfert, infant daughter of Brian and Johna Syfert of Clarksville, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at AMI St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Russellville.

Other survivors include one sister, Saylor Syfert of Clarksville; one brother, Hunter Syfert of Clarksville; grandparents, Robert and Barbara Syfert and John and Mary Laugwitz, all of Clarksville; and great-grandparents, Fred and Leota Cowell of Clarksville.

Private graveside services and burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Oakland cemetery with Rev. Vernon Bass officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

J. D. Grigsby

J. D. Grigsby, 69, of Hartman died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, in Clarksville.

He was a retired rancher and miner, son of the late James Douglas and Audie Marie Benge Grigsby, and was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Ruby Grigsby; three daughters, Marcia Patterson of Hartman, and Pamela Waits and Patricia Parham, both of Ozark; two sons, Danny Grigsby of Glendive, Mont., and Ronnie Grigsby of Subiaco; six sisters, Maxine Dorrough of Dardanelle, Exine Phillips of Magazine, Charlotte Osborn of Plainview, Barbara Jordan of Danville, Caroline Johnson of Kau Kaura, Wis., and Mary Jo Grigsby of Ola; four brothers, Donald Grigsby and Vondell Grigsby, both of Hartman, Loyd Ray Grigsby of Gerald, Mo., and Barney K. Grigsby of Danville; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Roller Chapel in Paris with burial in the Barnhill cemetery at Magazine.

James W. Self Jr.

James Winfred Self Jr., 75, of San Diego, Calif., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at his home.

He was a native of Johnson County, son of the late James Winfred Self Sr. and Erla Patterson Self Snyder, and retired from the U. S. Navy and civil service.

He is survived by two daughters, Karen Self of Los Angeles, Calif., and Rhonda Self of San Diego, Calif.; two sons, Richard Self of Washington and James E. Self of San Diego, Calif.; one sister, Pam McKee of Clarksville; and one brother, Richard Snyder of Lamar.

Funeral and burial were in San Diego, Calif.
