Richard A. Tisdale

Richard Allen Tisdale, 48, of Clarksville died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at his home.
He was a Marine veteran and member of the Pentecostal Church.
Survivors are his widow, Renae Johnston Tisdale; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Chris and Marla Seavey of Ozark and Anthony Seavey of Lamar; parents, Richard and Beatrice Tisdale of Ohio; one sister, Debbie Onion of Conneaut, Ohio; one brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Peggy Tisdale; one grandson, David Christopher Anthony Seavey of Lamar; three nieces, Tracy Tisdale, Michelle Tisdale and Elizabeth Tisdale; and two nephews, Tony and Jamie Onion.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Roller-Cox Chapel with Rev. Terry Schlinker officiating. The body was cremated.
Memorials may be made to Clarksville Feed and Supply, 401 West Cherry Street, Clarksville, AR 72830.

Thomas W. King

Thomas William King, 84, of Clarksville died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, in Johnson Regional Medical Center.
A native of Auburn in Franklin County, he was a son of the late Millard and Lilly Lay King, retired employee of Harding Glass Company of Fort Smith, member of St. Paul United Methodist Church of Fort Smith, and was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene Craft King.
Survivors are two sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Lance and Peggy King and Tommy Wayne and Sue King, all of Clarksville; one sister, Pauline Nicely of Fort Smith; one brother, Archie King of Fort Smith; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lance King officiating. Burial was in Liberty Hill cemetery at Hunt.
Pallbearers were David Stepp, Randy King, Bill King, and Ricky King.
Memorials may be made to Liberty Hill Community Church, Route 3 Box 170-B, Clarksville, AR 72830.

Edward J. Denning, Sr

Edward J. Denning, Sr. Age 78, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away August 27, 2002.
He was formerly of Denison, Texas. He was born in Hays, Kansas to Nicholas and Barbara Weigle Denning. He attended school in Hays, Kansas. He served in World War 2 and was President of Denning, Inc. of Texas and Arkansas.
He married Wilma Gravley of Hartman, Arkansas April 30, 1943. They had four children.
Survivors are his wife Wilma, of Hartman, Arkansas, two sons, Edward Denning Jr., of Amarillo, Texas, William E. Denning and Loretta of Austin, Arkansas, two daughters, Rev. Deborah L. Denning, and Linda M. Denning of Hartman. Five Grandchildren, Bobby and Jennifer Denning, Fayetteville, Arkansas, Rhonda and Johnny Hankins of Cabot, Arkansas, Sandra and Thad Finley of Lonoke, Arkansas, Sharon and Mark Bibbs, of Cabot, Arkansas, Charity and Cecil Adams of Little Elm, Texas. Five sisters, one brother and nine great-grandchildren, and numerous relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were, John Burke, Tim Bornowski, Mark Buresch, Bill Evans, Jimmy Ralph, and Randy Nailing.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. August 29, 2002, at Trinity Chapel with the Rev. Terry Schlinker and Rev. Bob Freeman officiating, Hardwicke Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dovie J. Johnson

Dovie Jane Johnson, 88, of Clarksville died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.
She was a retired cook, Baptist, daughter of the late Benton Lawson and Nora Sissco Smith, and widow of Jack E. Johnson.
Survivors include four daughters and two sons-in-law, Dorthy Mary Frogue and Willa Mae Taylor, both of Clarksville, Bonnie Ruth and Jack Taylor of Santa Maria, Calif., and Ester Leigh and Marcus Ernest of Harrison; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Roy Lee Wood of Clarksville and Floyd E. and Denia Wood of Salem, Ore.; two sisters, Effie Mae Brown and Lois Brown, both of Missouri; one brother, Harley Smith of Webb City, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Roller-Cox Chapel with Rev. Clyde Vire officiating. Burial was in Lamar cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ricky Martin, Bill Henry, Travis Johnson, Raymond Johnson, Jimmy Holman, and Randy Johnson.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jane Geneva Magby

Jane Geneva Magby, 81, of Clarksville died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at her home.
She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, daughter of the late Jack and Josephine Carpenter Gossett, and was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Magby; five sisters, Florence Williams, Bertha Brewer, Rosa Rowe, Gladys McGowan, and Mahala McCartney; and one brother, Clarence Gossett.
Survivors include her husband, Ewell G. Magby; three daughters, Jo Rothrock of Fayetteville, Jean Landis of Grand Junction, Colo., and Glenda Grossman of Denver, Colo.; five sons, Arden Magby of Duncan, Okla., Charles Magby of Hartman, and David Magby, John Magby and Gary Magby, all of Clarksville; one sister, Edith McIntosh of Grass Valley, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Roller-Cox Chapel with Rev. Glenn Newton officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery near Batson.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Magby, Joe Morales, Samuel Grossman, Scott Dragoo, Jim McCartney, and Jerry Yarbrough.
Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Linda Day Ashlock

Linda Day Ashlock, 62, of Garland, Texas, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002.
She was a former resident of the Bethlehem Community in Johnson County, daughter of the late Erastus and Ida Day, active in the Parent Teachers Association of Kimberlin, Southgate, Routh Roach, O'Banion and South Garland High School, retired from the Garland Independent School District in 1995, active speaker for conferences and retreats and had held leadership roles in women's ministries.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Kenneth Ashlock; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kenna and Kyle Cole of Garland, Texas, Rhonda and Brad Rountree of Mesquite, Texas, and Sharon and Byron Tilton of Hillsboro, Texas; five grandchildren, Garrett and Graham Cole of Garland, Texas, Timothy Rountree of Mesquite, Texas, and Blake and Blair Tilton of Hillsboro, Texas; mother-in-law, Mabel Ashlock of Clarksville; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Don and Phyllis Ashlock of Canton, Texas, and Gary and Jan Jacobs of Hartman; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral will be Wednesday, Aug. 28, at New Liberty Baptist Church in Garland, Texas, where her husband is the pastor. Burial will follow in Garland Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the New Liberty Baptist Church Building Fund.

Anna I. Johnston

Anna Imogene Garrett Johnston, 87, of Newport died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at Newport.
A native of Clarksville, she was a daughter of the late Harlow and Anna Williams Garrett, 1932 graduate of Clarksville High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in home economics in 1935 from The College of the Ozarks (now University of the Ozarks). She was a home economics teacher and basketball coach at Oppelo from 1935-37. She later became a home management supervisor for Farm Securtiy Administration in Marked Tree prior to being promoted in 1941 to supervisor over the Jonesboro District and later the Hot Springs District before being promoted again to the regional office of Farm Security Administration where she worked in loans and collections in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississsippi until her marriage to David L. Johnston in 1944.
She was a former resident of Mesilla Park, N. M., Las Cruces, N. M., and Yuma County, Ariz. While residing in Yuma County, Ariz., she was in charge of the family farming operation from 1955-60 before returning to Newport and becoming a member of the First United Methodist Church, Circle and United Methodist Women where she served as local treasurer, district treasurer, publicity and communications chairman from 1992-96, and program resources chairman in 1997. She was also active in several 4-H clubs, PTA, Jackson County Saddle Club and co-sponsored the youth of the First United Methodist Church for many years.
While in Las Cruces, N. M., she was named the Kiwaniqueen in 1955 and was also voted the Newport Kiwanis Queen of 1985-86. She was a member of the American Legion Neil-Griffin Post No. 47, recipient of an award for providing 10,000-plus hours of volunteer work at the Veterans Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., and a certificate of appreciation for volunteer work at the Veterans Hospital in North Little Rock.
She was preceded in death by one son, David L. Johnston Jr.; one brother, Harry Garrett; and one sister, Doris G. Johnson.
Other than her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Martha Johnston of Birmingham, Ala., and Ruth Elizabeth Johnston of Little Rock; two sisters, Ruth Garrett and Midge Blackmon, both of Albuquerque, N. M.; three nieces, Jean Waszak, Sue Ann Foster and Kathy Blackmon; and five nephews, Edwin Sherman, Jim Blackmon, David Blackmon, Tom Johnston, and Jim Johnston.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at the First United Methodist Church in Newport with Rev. Roger Glover and Dr. John C. Wright officiating.
Burial was in Walnut Grove cemetery under the direction of Jackson's Newport Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Gay Lacy III, John Minor Sr., John Minor Jr., Mark McGaughey, Gary Carlton, Penn Stafford, and Marvin Thaxton.
Honorary pallbearers were Bill Pratt, Bug Chapman, and members of the United Methodist Women and the Newport Kiwanis Club.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Third and Laurel streets, Newport, AR 72112 or David L. Johnston Jr., Nursing Scholarship, c/o United Methodist Foundation, 5300 Evergreen, Little Rock, AR 72205.

Alton Vire

Alton Vire, 63, of Tucson, Ariz., died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, in Tucson, Ariz.
He was a former resident of Johnson County and son of the late Randolph Vire.
Survivors are one daughter, Melanie Andress of Memphis, Tenn.; one son, Brian Scott Vire of Clarksville; mother, Beulah Vire of Clarksville; three brothers, Rabin Vire and Clyde Vire, both of Clarksville, and Rickie Vire of Corpus Christi, Texas; and four grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at Roller-Cox Chapel with Rev. Bill Milam officiating. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.

J. L. Melson

J. L. Melson, 69, a native of Arkansas, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, in Sacramento, Calif.
He retired from McClellan AFB in 1975 and was operator of an antique and used tools business.
Survivors include his widow, Oleander Melson; two daughters, Barbara Lawrence and Michele Corbus; two sons, Joseph Melson and Patrick Melson; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Rosa Van Loh; four sisters, Loissie Wood, Lucy Ritchie, Mary Russell, and Florence Sloan; three brothers, Sammie, Paul and James Melson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at North Sacramento Funeral Home with burial at Sunset Lawn Memorial Park.
