REDMOND, Helen Gail, born March 26, 1929, died October 14, 1999. Helen Redmond was a unique human being who always had a concern about the other person – a selfless woman who always had an infectious smile, a positive outlook and a helping hand for anyone who needed it. Helen was born in Cleveland. After attending business and career colleges, she served as the secretary to the Lake County prosecuting Attorney from 1957 to 1960 when she moved to Arizona.
After graduating from Northern Arizona School of Nursing in 1972, she worked as a registered nurse for 27 years. She utilized her medical skills at hospitals in Flagstaff, Tucson and El Paso to help heal the ill and offered a smile and encouraging words to cheer them up. She worked at Flagstaff Community Hospital providing patient care and in Tucson she was employed at University Medical Center in infection control from 1981 to 1984. Later she nursed at Life Care Center and Desert Life skilled nursing facilities. Beginning in 1991, she worked at Kino Community Hospital in the Quality Assurance department until she retired in July, 1998. As a person born with artistic talent, Helen received a three year scholarship to the Cleveland School of Art while in high school and a four year scholarship to the Kansas City School of Art in 1947. Her interest in art was lifelong and culminated in her receipt of a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1989 from the University of Arizona. She painted dozens of unique paintings to the delight of her family and friends. Although she never realized her goals of opening an art studio, or writing a book or starting a small restaurant with friend Mary Bartok, her accomplishments were myriad. What she did for her family, friends, co-workers, and even strangers she touched with her love was to instill in them her enthusiasm for life and her positive attitude. These were her most important accomplishments and will live on for as long as those people whose lives she touched are on this earth.
She is survived by her husband, Jack; children, Don (Shannon), Michele (Kerry), Kent (Maura) and Mark Hancock (Tracy); grandchildren, Gwyneth, Leah, Alanna and Harrison; and sisters, Grace (George) Lazanich and Louise (Gary) Helseth.
