MOORE, Norma May, 77, of Tucson, passed away December 3, 1999. She was born October 22, 1922 in South Bend, IN, and was a Marine Corp Staff Sergeant during WWII. She was preceded in death by her first husband William D. May; and is survived by her second husband John A. Moore; and her two daughters, Pamela R. May and Marsha Sias; son-in-law, Henry Sias; grandchildren, Patrick Vezino, Jennifer and Jamie Sias; her sister, Doris J. Geraghty of Cassopolis, MI; three nieces and two nephews; and two stepdaughters, Carlene Carlin and Jo-Ellen Francis; seven step grandchildren; and eight step great grandchildren. Funeral Service will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 7, 1999 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 East Grant Road, where Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 6, 1999. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to favorite charity.

PHARO THOMAS PHELPS died on December 3, 1999, in Tucson, AZ after a courageous year-long battle with brain cancer. Pharo Thomas was born on January 1, 1953, in Troy, NY. Beloved son of Pharo Alfred Phelps and Lois May Higgs Phelps of Moraga, CA, and devoted father to daughter Marina Lynn Fisher-Phelps of Tucson, AZ, who survive him. In addition to his parents and daughter, he is survived by his brothers Andrew (Barbara) Phelps of Oak Ridge, TN, and John (Rachel) Phelps of Los Altos, CA; sister, Dr. Jennifer (Frank) PhelpsHermantin of Chestertown, MD; aunt Betty (Robert) Muck of San Diego, CA; dear friend Kathy Kretschmer of Tucson, AZ; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Pharo Thomas' early life was an odyssey with his Navy family in Guam, Maryland, Rhode Island, California, England, Spain, and Virginia, where he finished high school and began college as an art major. In 1975 he settled in Tucson as a VISTA volunteer and discovered a passion for hang gliding. A swimmer all of his life, his heart was in the ocean especially the rugged Northern California coast near his boyhood home of Monterey. He was known to many friends for his daily visits to Tucson pools where he regularly swam, often with his daughter Marina. His early career was in the construction trades as a member of the Operating Engineers Union local number 428. Among projects he worked on were the Menlo Apartments, Tucson International Airport, Palo Verde Power Plant, and the cleanup of the oil spill with Bechtel in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. Pharo Thomas was the operating partner of Phelps Western Investments, which he carefully built up over 20 years into a successful business. He also had his Arizona realtor's license and has been affiliated with Tucson real estate firms for several years. He handcrafted his adobe home in the Tortalita hills overlooking Tucson and was putting the final touches on this work of art surrounded by saguaros and wildlife. He was friend and helper to all and gave generously of his time to help create the newly-forming town of Tortalita. He will be deeply missed by all of us.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Saints Peter and Paul Church 1946 East Lee Street at North Campbell Avenue, Tucson, AZ, on Tuesday, December 7, 1999, at 7 p.m. A memorial gathering for family and friends is also being planned for Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m., December 9, 1999, at Pharo Thomas' home in Tortalita. Friends are asked to bring any personal memories, photos or reminiscences. Signs will be posted from the intersection of North Thornydale Road and Moore Road to provide directions. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in his name to American Brain Tumor Association, 2720 River Road, Suite 146, Des Plaines, IL 60015, or to Carondolet Hospice Services, 1802 West St. Mary's Road, Tucson, AZ 85745.

Elizabeth 'Betty' Graves Ronstadt, age 91, died Thursday, December 2, 1999. She is survived by one son, Karl G. Ronstadt of Tucson; one daughter, Nina Ronstadt Hoag (Hal W.) of Tucson; former daughter-in-law Marilyn 'Corkey' Ronstadt of Tucson; four grandchildren, Carlos D. Ronstadt and Cathy Jolma, both of Phoenix, Robin Patch of Tucson and Nina Ronstadt of San Diego, CA; and by six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ronstadt was the wife of Carlos Ronstadt and lived at the Santa Margarita Ranch in the early part of her life. Later she lived in Tucson, participating in many Civic and Community activities. She was a member of the Junior League, Pi Beta Phi Sorority, Arizona Cattle Growers Cow Belle's, was an early Hostess for the Silver and Turquoise Ball, and the St. Luke's Biale de Los Flores. She returned to the country, living in her dream home designed by Jossler at Agua Linda. In 1957 Elizabeth returned to Tucson with her husband Carlos to enjoy his retirement years and travel. In 1972, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlos, and over the years by many, many dear friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 1999 at 4:00 p.m. at the Northminster Presbyterian Church, 2450 E. Ft. Lowell, with Dr. Andrew G. Ross, Pastor, officiating. Assisting in the service will be Mr. John Cheek. The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tucson Symphony Association, 5842 N. Camino del Mar, 85718 or The University of Arizona. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Dodge Chapel.

ROWLAND, A. Daniel, 70, of Tucson, died December 2, 1999. Survived by wife, Elva M. Rowland; daughter, Dana M. Rowland; son, Patrick Rowland and daughter-in-law, Valerie Rowland; grandchildren, Justin and Noah; sister, Jean Strong; brothers, Jack (Jane) Rowland and James (Joyce) Rowland. Memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 7, at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd., Tucson.

STRAUS, Abraham, 83, died December 4, 1999. Father of Ira (Nancy) Straus, Mitchell (Debbie) Straus, and Gary (Ida) Straus; grandfather of Tammy, Jeff, and Amanda. One brother and two sisters also survive. Family services were held. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

STRESING, Georgia, 85, of Tucson, passed away December 3, 1999. Survivors include two daughters; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one twin brother. Funeral Service will be held at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave., Wednesday, December 8, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior. Interment to follow at South Lawn cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Georgia's name to the charity of your choice.

YSLAS, Arsenio V., 62, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away December 3, 1999. Survived by son, Arsenio G. and Tuly Yslas; seven grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 1999 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. Stone Ave., with a Rosary recited 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Wednesday, December 8, 1999, 9:00 a.m. at St. Augustine's Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Ave. Interment to follow at Holy Hope cemetery. BLAZEK, Charles Elmer, 74, died December 5, 1999. Loving husband of Janet; loving father of Linda (Kenneth) Machacek and Diane (Lauren) Vancura; grandfather of Joy (Glenn) Cowham, Carla Machacek, Jennifer Vancura and Kyle Vancura; great-grandfather of Katie Cowham and nephew of Grace Hartfield. GARDINER, Alice Pitts, 81, died December 4, 1999. Alice was born August 19, 1918 in Baltimore, MD. She came to Tucson in January of 1944. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman B. Gardiner in 1982. Mother of Norman B. Gardiner, Jr. of Melbourne, Australia, Edward Llyod Gardiner of Tucson, Dorothy P. Gardiner of Tucson and Sarah A. M. (Leon Lawrence) Gardiner of Mesa; grandmother of Alisa M. (Richard) Gonzalez, Torii C. Gardiner and Shane D. P. Gardiner. She touched everyone who knew her and will always be loved. Memorial service 3:00p.m. Thursday, December 9, 1999 at Grace St. Paul's Episcopal Church 2331 E. Adams, with Rev. Gordon McBride officiating. A gathering of friends will take place 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. Wednesday, December 8, 1999 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway

GARY CHARLES JONES, 43, of Tucson, died December 3, 1999 after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Gary was born on October 4, 1956. His father, Charles L. Jones, precedes him in death. He is survived by his mother Evelyn Jones-Miller, his two children Kira and Adam, his brother Steve (Linda) Jones, his sisters Rebecca Jones and Donna (Phil) Summers, and his grandmother Regina Jones, all of Tucson. He is survived by nieces and a nephew. He grew up in Tucson and was a graduate of Rincon High School and the Univ. of Arizona. He was employed by the Department of Corrections in Florence. Gary was an avid bike rider and enjoyed participating in local bicycle events; no distance was too far. His love will be missed greatly by his family, relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held December 7, 1999 at 11:00AM at East Lawn Mortuary Chapel located at 5801 E. Grant Rd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Casa de los Ninos.

LE COMPTE, Paul, 59, died December 4, 1999. Husband of Deanna Le Compte; father of David Le Compte and Jennifer (Zac) Aikin; grandfather of Ashley Le Compte and Logan Aikin; brother of Howard Le Compte of Seattle, Billy Le Compte of Denver and Dave Le Compte of Tucson. Paul retired as a captain from the city of Tucson Fire Dept. in 1996. A celebration of Paul's life will be held at 4:00p.m. at the families home December 10, 1999. Memorial service 1:00p.m., Friday, December 10, 1999 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. Donation's in Paul's memory may be made to Casa de Los Ninos, 1101 N. 4th Ave., Tucson, AZ 85705.

McELROY, Glenela C. 'Fritzi' died November 25, 1999. Previously longtime resident of Chicago area, resident of Tucson since 1972. preceded in death by parents, James and Leonora McElroy; brothers, Thomas M. and Robert E. McElroy; sisters, Margaret Ann Noll, Josephine L. Kotarek and Beatrice McElroy. Survived by sister, Grace G. McElroy of Green Valley; nieces, Grace V. Moran of Green Valley and Genevieve Hemovich of Tucson, June Willroth of Iowa; nephews, Thomas O. McElroy of Tucson and Richard L. Kotarek of Ark. Glenela was a longtime member of St. Cyril's Church, 4725 E. Pima Street, where a Memorial Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 10, 1999. Inurnment will follow at Holy Hope cemetery. PINNELL, Robert James, age 76, died November 30, 1999 in Tucson. Born June 14, 1923 in Illinois, he was raised by the Lindsay Family. A veteran of World War II, Company 'A' 57th Engineers in the South Pacific, and a retired 40 years turbine operator at Tucson Electric Power Company in the Power Production Department. He died a very honorable and much loved man. He will be missed deeply. Survived by wife, Marjorie; four children, Karen (Peter), Terri, Cheryl, Robert, Lindsay (Patty), and granddaughter, Acacia Lindsay Pinnell. Arrangements by ARIZONA MORTUARY UNIVERSITY CHAPEL.

ROSEN, Sidney, (Sid), beloved brother of Libbie Levin and Ruth Motove, died Sunday, December 5, 1999 in Tucson, Arizona. Mr. Rosen and his wife Sylvia, who predeceased him, lived in New York City where they enjoyed the arts, music and ice-skating in Central Park.
Mr. Rosen a lifelong learner, mathematician, teacher and principal, devoted his life to the education of his students. After retiring as principal of Jersey Academy, he continued to enjoy tutoring, especially in mathematics.
Although he had no children, Mr. Rosen will be remembered always by his countless students whose lives he touched and his nieces, nephews, their children and families. No services will be held.
In lieu of flowers, it was Mr. Rosen's wish that a donation be made in his memory to UNICEF. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & cemetery N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile

SEWELL, Virginia Mae has been reunited with her husband in heaven. She completed the work God had for her to do on earth on December 5, 1999. Virginia was a loving mother of Michael Sewell, Therese Gambill, and Kathleen Johnson; sister of Joanne Striplin; grandmother of Jennifer Tobiason, Meghan Gambill, Shane Gambill and Aaron Johnson; two great-grandchildren Tiffini and Savannah. Virginia was born in Wild Rose WI on May 9, 1921 and her family moved to Arizona in 1933. Their home was in Oracle and she graduated from Florence high school, and then attended the University of Arizona. For the last 27 years she has worked as a cashier for the TUSD lunch program. She has been grandma to hundreds of children over the years and was still working. We know all who knew and loved her will deeply miss her. She taught us all kindness, love, patience and tolerance. She always saw the good in all people and lived her life to serve God and others. She left a message for us her children, which we feel can be shared with all of you, they are the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, Love one another as I have loved you. She lived her life by these words, she wants all of us to do the same, by doing so we honor the great and amazing woman we all knew and loved so much. Rosary will be recited at 4:30p.m. on Thursday December 9, 1999, memorial mass directly following at 5:00p.m. at St. Josephs Church 215 S. Craycroft. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her name to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

TRUMBO, Jane Horth, age 78 of Tucson, passed away December 2, 1999. Mrs. Trumbo was born in Ilion, New York, and graduated from Utica Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. She joined the US Army and was a member of the 5th Army Auxiliary Surgical Group. She was involved in four successful campaigns with the 3rd and 9th U.S. Armies, including the battle of the bulge. After her discharge from the Army, Mrs. Trumbo pursued her nursing career with the Veteran's Administration and worked in Denver, New York, and New Jersey as Assistant Chief of Nursing Services. She went on to earn her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Nursing at the University of Colorado where she also earned her Phi Beta Kappa. She retired in 1971. Mrs. Trumbo's husband died in 1974. She is survived by brothers, Stephen and Richard, of Tucson; sister, Susan White, of Mountain View, California; and nieces and nephews, David White, Robert Horth, Steven Horth and Kimberly Christensen. There will be no local services. Burial will be at Arlington National cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tucson Association for the Blind.
