CARY, Hugh R., died August 29, 1996. A retired executive officer of the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in Boston. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marjorie E. Cary; his children, Bruce B. Cary of Auburn, WA, Janice Cary Spolidoro of Needham, MA, Dr. Stephen P. Cary of Providence, RI and Walter J. Cary of Mechanic Falls, ME; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Born in Newport, Maine, a graduate of the University of Maine and a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, he served in the China-Burma-India Theater in WWII. An avid sports fan, golfer and pilot, he belonged to the University of Maine Black Bear Club, the University of Arizona Dugout Club, Wildcat Club, the Oro Valley Country Club, and was a former member of the Southern Arizona Seniors Golf Association. For over 50 years he also was a member of the Meridian Splendor Lodge #49, AF and AM in Newport, Maine. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. McCALL, Frank A., 87, died, August 30, 1996. Survived by his wife, Aileen; two daughters living out of town and daughter, Carolyn Hoegemeier of Tucson; grandchildren, Jason and Jill Hoegemeier. O'BRIEN, Michael H., returned home to his Lord on August 28, 1996, the Feast of Saint Augustine, the patron of his adopted Diocese of Tucson. Michael was born on January 15, 1913 at Birch Run, Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan. He had perennial interest in life and engineering, and eventually became a diesel engineer with the Detroit Diesel Division of General Motors. He served for two years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. During his career, he worked on General Motors' dream “Train of Tomorrow, ” and traveled the country on the prototype in 1945-1946. Mike worked to keep the diesel engines running in the extreme cold of the Alaskan winter during the construction of the oil pipeline, often spending his summers in the Yuma desert on the Army proving grounds, working with diesel engines. Mike loved the outdoors, spending his free time hunting, camping, and hiking wherever his assignments took him. He was an avid reader and student, learning to fly in 1968; he enjoyed traveling the world, especially after his retirement to Tucson in 1973. He was an active member of the American Rifle Association, Tucson Rod and Gun Club, Southern Arizona Hiking Club and many other non-profit organizations. He was educated by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Nazareth, Michigan, and remained a faithful supporter of Catholic schools and the charitable activities of his beloved Catholic Church. He is survived by his cousin, Richard Vincent Wolohan of(Saginaw, Michigan); and his half-sister, Elsie Rowland of (Plymouth, Michigan); and many other family members and friends. Michael has requested that, instead of flowers, gifts may be made to the Saint Joseph Catholic School (Tucson) O'Brien Scholarship Endowment as a permanent memorial and to help provide Catholic education to future generations. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 2, 1996 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3, 1996 at Saint Joseph's Parish, 215 South Craycroft Road, Tucson, AZ 85711. Interment will follow at Holy Hope Cemetery.

SALDANA, Esperanza “Hope”, 82 of San Diego, CA. Passed away after a lengthy illness of Alzheimer's Disease in San Diego, CA on August 29, 1996. She is survived by sons, Fred E. (Yolanda) Gutierrez, Frank (Isabel) Espino; also survived by 11 grandchildren, James Andrew, Christopher Daniel, Belinda, Margie, Leticia, Ray, Franklin, Leo, Robert, Ricky, Mercy and 19 great grandchildren. Visitation will be at TUCSON MORTUARY, 204 S. Stone Ave. on Tuesday, September 2nd with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m., St. Augustine's Cathedral followed by interment at Holy Hope Cemetery. Hope and her husband Leo came to Tucson in 1956 and established permanent residence. Over the years they were able to develop an identity and loyal following for their brand of “Personal Touch” musical talents. They performed in almost every musical venue in Tucson and over the years received numerous accolades, awards and recognition from the friendships they established along the way. Hope was a life member of the American Federation of Musicians (Tucson Chapter). Friends of Esperanza are asked to donate a contribution to the Alzheimer's Association. SCHIFMAN, David, 79, of Tucson, died August 31, 1996. Survived by his wife of 55 years, Selma Mae Schifman; son, Harold (Sandra) Schifman of Tucson; two grandchildren; brothers, Herman Schifman, Morris Schifman, Ben Schifman and Meyer Schifman, all of Kansas City, MO; many nieces and nephews. Graveside Services Tuesday, 2:30 p.m. Congregation Ner Tamid Section, EVERGREEN CEMETERY, Rabbi Joseph S. Weizenbaum, Congregation Ner Tamid officiating. SEAL, Claud, 91 died August 31, 1996. A resident of Arizona for 67 years. Retired bricklayer and member of local #3 AZ for 60 years. Born in Picayune, MS November 19, 1904. Survived by wife Thelma Seal; son, Claud W. (Vivian) Seal and daughter, Susan Northern; three brothers, Virgil, Clifton and Edward and sister, Mildred; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. BRUNO, Clara Emily, 76, born January 22, 1920 in Whitehall, NY to Leslie and Stella Tripp who preceded her in death. Clara went to meet the Lord on August 12, 1996 due to complications from heart problems and diabetes. Clara was married to Howard Heckerson for 40+ years and lived in Glens Falls, NY for most of her life. She moved to Florida where she lived for many years. She then married Howard J. Bruno in 1990 and lived the remainder of her years in Tucson. She is survived by Howard J. Bruno; and her brother, Leslie (Doris) Tripp; sister, Betty Wilson; and several nieces and nephews. Howard J. and Clara enjoyed traveling and belonged to the Good Sam Club, Family Motor Coach Association, Elkís Club, Eagles and was a member of St. Cyril's Parish and the Senior Citizen Club of St. Cyril's. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to American Diabetes Association. A Memorial Mass will be said at St. Cyril's Parish on Friday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m.

HUSSAR, Elizabeth, 94, of Tucson, died August 29, 1996. Survivors include: son, William J. (Dena) Hussar; daughter, Helen (Joseph) Kelemen; grandchildren, William H., Michael S., Holly E. Hussar, Carol A. Mercef, Richard F. Kelemen, Kathy M. Foltz; great-grandchildren, Diane, O Michele, Darick, Kristina, Steven, and Samantha; one sister, Ann Gruebel. Elizabeth was a Tucson resident since April 1941, after relocating from St. Louis, MO. LAVANCE, Leopal, 89, of Phoenix, a homemaker, died, August 28, 1996. Leopal was born in Wheeler County, Texas and was formerly of Hudson Falls, N.Y. She was a member of Krafty Bazaar at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. She is survived by daughter, Marie Evans; sons, John M., Cecil N., and Willis H.; sister, Mary Crocker; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. MORGAN, Kenneth Russell, 77, a 48-year resident of Tucson, passed away August 29, 1996. Born October 12, 1918 in Tuscarawas, Ohio. Mr. Morgan retired from Hughes after 24 years as an electronic research technician and was a ham radio operator “W7LHN” for 50 years. Survived by his wife, Elithabeth Layton Morgan; sons, Rev.Thomas David Morgan, Richard (Carol) Morgan and Stephen D. (Georgia) Morgan; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Grace Otto; and brother, Paul (Jackie) Morgan, both of Tuscarawas, Ohio. REGEHR, Patricia L., born May 28, 1960, died August 24, 1996. Survived by her husband of 14 years, Steve B. Regehr; her parents, John and Helen Umstott; her brothers, Robert and John (Lisa) Umstott; parents-in-law, O'Neal and Elda Regehr; brother-in-law, Dennis (Lori) Regehr; nephews, Johnny and Eric Umstott, Michael and Matthew Regehr; and many loving friends and family. Patricia graduated from Flowing Wells High School in 1978 and the University of Arizona in 1988 with a degree in education and was a member of Kappa Delta Phi Sorority. Patricia's chosen profession was teaching and her life was a lesson in grace, faith and fortitude to us all. She overcame physical suffering again and again, and shared her experience and wisdom through participation in community groups. Patricia's gentle strength, keen mind and giving heart never failed to inspire her loved ones, and her example will sustain us through our loss. She was an angel on earth and watches over us all now. Mass and Memorial Service will be held Sept. 7, 9 a.m. at St. Odilia, 7570 N. Paseo Del Norte. BLANKENSHIP, Lorene A., a 50 year resident of Tucson, passed away August 28, 1996. Born May 25, 1918 in Neosho, Missouri. Preceded in death by her husband, Glenn and her son, Harold. Survived by her daughter, Patricia (Ernie) Encinas; grandchildren, Hector (Isabel) Federico, Christina (Matt) King; granddaughter, Stephanie Blankenship; great-grandchildren, Frank, Anthony, Krystal, Federico, Justin and Haly De Ann King; great-great-grandchild, Javier Federico; sister, Nadene (Bill) Bradley; and other relatives and many friends. A Visitation will be held today from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave. Funeral Service 1:00 p.m. Saturday at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery.

DUENES, Alice, 77, died August 28, 1996. Survived by her sister, Mary Moore of Scottsdale; daughter, Sue South (Gary) and granddaughter, Libra South of Globe; and son, Richard Duenes of Tucson. Alice was a retired union cashier who worked for Goodmans and Lucky Markets. Her family would like to thank all her friends who came by to visit her in the hospital and at her home. Thanks also to her many friends at the Armory Park Senior Center where Alice had so much fun dancing and listening to the music. Special thanks to neighbor Martina and nurse Debbie. In compliance with her wishes, there will not be a service. Cremation by Desert Rose Cremation.

FELD, Marvin, died August 20, 1996. A prolific writer, Marvin's passions included the natural environment, classical music, basketball and politics. He will be remembered by friends and family who have learned from his absolute and gentle love of nature and his emphasis on our dependent connection to the environment. Marvin's life as a teacher, artist, neighborhood activist and philosopher has been a major contribution to many communities and to all who have known him. Born March 23, 1931 in Brooklyn, Marvin's formative years were in Roosevelt, NJ. After military service during the Korean War, Marvin attended the University of Illinois at Urbana, receiving a degree in Landscape Architecture in 1959. He joined the city of Hightstown, PA as a city planner, followed by employment with the architectural firm of Edward Stone in NY and private consultant work in the East and in Tucson, where he has lived since 1977. Marvin taught landscape architecture at the University of Arizona and Pima College. Odessey Gardens, his Tucson firm, developed many private and public southwest ecological landscapes. Marvin was a mentor to many and a member of the University Planning Committee, Campus Community Relations Committee and Tucson Landscape Advisory Board. Marvin is survived by his beloved daughter, Miriam Feld Mathieson; and grandson, Lieb; brother, Maury and Myron; and many other loving family members and friends. Memorial Service at Sunset Park, (the new park designed by Marvin in front of City Hall) at 6:30 p.m. Friday, August 30.
