JASPER, Genevieve Hagan, 78, died of breast cancer on October 26, 1996 in Tucson. She was born in Clifton, AZ and lived 76 years in Arizona. A graduate of the University of Arizona, Gen was a member of Gamma Phi Beta. She taught in Tucson area schools after graduation and later managed Harlow’s Nursery for many years. Gen was active in the Tucson Garden Club and Tucson Iris Society. She is survived by daughters, Janet (Scott) Kellner of Tucson and Judy (Mike) Goyer of San Rafael, CA; son, Bill (Winnie) Jasper of Moraga, CA;sister, Polly (L. Boyd) Finch of Tucson; five grandchildren and one granddog. At her request, no services were held. Donations in Gen’s memory may be made to Casa de Los Ninos, 1101 N. 4th Ave., Tucson, 85705.

JOHNSON, Marie M., 77, of Tucson, passed away October 27, 1996. Preceded in death by her first husband, Theodore L. Pettit; her son, Theodore E. Pettit. Survived by husband, Les Johnson; daughter, Judith A. Saylor (Mark) of Tucson; son, James D. Pettit (Myrta) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughter, Dorothy M. Carson (Larry) of Bedford, TX; son, Darryl E. Pettit (Nadine) of Kansas City, MO; son, Jeffrey A. Pettit (Kerry) of Tucson; son, Douglas G. Pettit (Susan) of Tucson; niece, Vicky Barnes (Dean) of Olympia, WA. Visitation will be at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY AND CEMETERY, 5401 S. Park Ave., from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m Wednesday, October 30, 1996. Memorial Service will be Thursday, October 31, 1996, 1:00 p.m., Calvary Evangelist Center, 5160 S. Treat Ave., Tucson, AZ., with Pastor Ruben Rangel officiating.

LEONE, Ben, a 45 year resident of Tucson, died on October 29, 1996. He was a prominent business owner of Frontier TV and Appliances for 25 years. During World War II he was an officer in the U. S. Merchant Marines. He has been an active member in the Tucson Desert Mariners. He held a private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying for many years. He is survived by and will be dearly missed by his loving wife Delores of 50 years; and his daughter and son-in-law, Melody and Bob Webster. Other survivors are his sisters, Mary Swenson and Ann Drinkwater; his brother, Vincent Leone; niece, Antoinette Hoetzl; and several other relatives. A Memorial Service will be held at Santa Catalina Mission, 14380 N. Oracle Rd., Thursday, October 31 at 10:00 a.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to the Santa Catalina Mission.

LILES, Joan E., 81, of Tucson, died October 28, 1996. She is survived by husband of 57 years, Carl; daughters, Janice Pierce and Lynn Bright, both of Tucson, Paulette Martin of Illinois, Andra Burnam of Lake Tahoe; sons, Greg Liles of Tucson, James and Phillip Liles of Illinois and Michael Liles of Las Vegas; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services Friday, 10:00 a.m., St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church with Father Miguel officiating. Interment to follow Holy Hope Cemetery. STENZ, Edith Mary, beloved wife of the late Charles E. Stenz, Jr., went to join him in eternal rest October 28, 1996. She was born in New York City, NY, on August 17, 1914 and married Charles, August 16, 1936. They moved to Tucson, AZ in 1953. She will be missed by her daughters, Barbara (Wayne) Wright, Edithmary (Victor) Stenz-Gomez; and son, Charles W. (Liz) Stenz, all of Tucson. She is also survived by one sister, Anselina Presutti in New York City, and was the much loved grandmother of 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, most of whom reside in Tucson. A Memorial Service will beThursday, October 31 at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd (at Speedway), at 2:30 p.m.

SWANSON, Carl A. 'Swanie' 79, of Forest Lakes, cherished husband and beloved father of five, grandfather of 12, great-grandfather of three, died October 27, 1996. Born in Brainerd, Minn, he attended the University of Minnesota, including a year of study in Mexico City. After graduation he worked as an independent pilot for the postal service in Texas. This sparked a life long infatuation with aviation and Carl eagerly went to work for the fledgling Civil Aeronautical Agency (precursor to the Federal Aviation Administration.) His life’s work took him to many different parts of the country, lastly to Tucson, where he retired from the FAA as Air Traffic Control Manager after a career of 37 years, distinguished by numerous awards and honors including the prestigious Air Traffic Controller of the Year in 1976. After retirement he taught at the University of Oklahoma and subsequently managed the Champlin Air Museum at Falcon Field. Carl was an enthusiastic member of the Society of Airway Pioneers, the Quiet Birdmen, and the Elks. He helped share his love of aviation by volunteering as controller for air derbies as well as being an early advocate of women’s flying. Carl is survived by his wife, Peg; daughters, Julie (John) Kolakowski, Maggie (Ron) Jones, Sue (Gary) Dimmitt, Katy (Scott) Lewis; and son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Terri Swanson. The family suggests contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower, Phoenix 85014. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis Xavier Parish, 4715 N. Central, on Thursday, October 31, at 9:30 a.m. with viewing at Grimshaw Mortuary, 710 E. Bethany Home Rd., Phoenix, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 30.

WANG, Anthony David, 44, died October 24, 1996. Born in Washington D.C. Tony received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan and a Masters Degree from the University of Arizona. He established residence in Tucson in 1978, where he was a Product Design Engineer at Burr-Brown Corporation for 17 years and later at the National Semiconductor Corporation where he served as Principal Design Engineer. Tony had a wide variety of interests including hiking, scuba diving, skiing, cycling and photography. Survivors include his mother, Lucy; and a brother, Vincent; and many people fortunate enough to have been his friends. Tony will be remembered as a man who loved life and was concerned with the well being of others. A private Funeral Service for the family will be held in Sun City with a Memorial Service to be held in Tucson at the Unity of Tucson Church, 3617 N. Camino Blanco, on Saturday, November 2, 1996 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Arizona Cancer Center, Development Office, 1515 N. Campbell Ave., P.O. WEBB, John R., 75, of Tucson, passed away October 26, 1996. Survived by wife, Billie; children, Ralph (Lisa) Webb, Patrick(Tammy) Webb, Wayne (Linda) Webb and Diane Webb-Vinton (Jay). Also survived by five grandchildren, two brothers and four sisters. Mr. Webb established the first guide dog school for the blind in Mexico and trained guide dogs for 30 years in Michigan and Mexico. The last 20 years, he has owned and operated Webb’s Steak House with his family. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 31, 1996 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at ARIZONA MORTUARY, 7 E. University Blvd. Private interment in Holy Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tucson Assn. for the Blind. Arrangements by ARIZONA MORTUARY.

YOVONOVITZ, John, age 77, longtime Arizona teacher and coach (30 years), of natural causes, October 27, 1996, at Tucson Veterans Hospital after long illness. He is survived by his wife, Blanche of Tucson; three sons, John F. and Patricia Yovonovitz (and granddaughter, Kathy Mary Yovonovitz) of Lakeside-Pinetop, Arizona, Rudy E. Yovonovitz and Alan G. Yovonovitz (Tucson); and one brother, Rudolph Ulrich of Walnut Creek, CA; and sister, Joann (Valerie) and Don Erlenbach of Danville, CA and families. John Yovonovitz was born in 1919 in East Chicago, IL and lived and went to school in Gary, Indiana (all city football champs (1937-38). He played football at the University of Arizona 1939-41, on Mike Casteel’s 1941 team, record (7-3). After Pearl Harbor, his education was interrupted and he enlisted in the Army Air Corp at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, December 8, 1941. He served as Sergeant, Physical Education instructor in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina before N. Africa and Operation Torch in 1942-3. In England for the Ninth Air Force, P-47's, P-51's, he served as radioman, mechanic, and rifleman (earning two distinguished service crosses in three campaigns – Normandy, Belgium (Bulge) and Rhine. After the war, he finished at U. A., Tucson with Bachelors in 1948, and masters at Colorado State University at Greeley, Colorado in 1949-50. In Arizona, he taught/coached at Sahuarita, Amphi, South Mountain, Winslow, Williams, Holbrook and Patagonia, last season 1971-72 Head Coach (6-5 record). His motto was 'Don’t give up the ship.' He will be buried in Lakeside, Arizona after services at Tucson South Lawn, VA. He had a heart of gold, and a kind word for all. May God keep his soul in rest and peace. R. Y.

ATKINSON, Fred R., 77, passed away October 27, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Tucson; children, Arnett (Theresia); and Benjamin (Gretchen) Atkinson of WI; Shirley Wright; Wilbor Wright; and Karyne Carter, all of KS; brother, Richard Atkinson of Topeka, KS; grandchildren, Ursula Aggurre of CA; Monika Fagan of Vail, AZ; Peter Atkinson; and David Atkinson of WI; Sawn Atkinson; Merelise; great-grandchildren, Ricardo Aggurre of KS; and Cheri Fagan of Vail, AZ. BROOKE, DeForrest, Lt. Col. U.S. Army Ret., 71, died Sunday, October 27, 1996 in Tucson. Born in Chattanooga, Tenn.Survived by wife of 43 years, Charlotte Young Brooke of Tucson; son, DeForrest (Chip) Brooke II, Major U.S. Army Reserve (Jill), Timothy Y. Brooke, Ph.D of Pasadena, CA; daughter, Kimberly A. Brooke of Tucson; one granddaughter, MacKenzie; two nephews and one niece. Forrest was in the finance corps and served in the Army 23 years. He graduated from the University of Tenn., Chattanooga, and from the University of Michigan. Preceded in death by brother. Graveside Services for Mr. Brooke will be held Tuesday, October 29, 1996 at 1:00 p.m. at Ft. Huachuca Cemetery, Ft. Huachuca, AZ. Family suggest memorials may be made to your favorite charity. CORN, Susan Marie (Mikalonis), 34, died October 26, 1996. Susan will be sadly missed by husband, Joe W. Corn of Tucson; parents, Mik and Donna Mikalonis of Tucson; brothers, David (Pam) Mikalonis of San Antonio, TX, Mike (Judy) Mikalonis of Sacramento, CA; sister, Debi (Nick) Manglallan of Seattle, WA; foster children, Brian and Jeannie; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles also survive. We will miss you, 'Ozie.'Mass will be offered 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 30 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 1375 S. Camino Seco, with Father Charles Cloud officiating. Interment to follow at Our Lady of the Desert Cemetery. DIXON, John Norman 'Mutt', age 72, of Oracle, died Sunday, October 27, 1996. He is survived by wife, Ann; daughters, Jean (Bob) Shields, Julie (Mike) Squires, and Jeri (Russell) Gossett; son, Bruce (Sandy); foster daughters, Lisa (Jim) Hensley, Leslie (Tim) Beauchamp, and Holly (John) Harris; sister, Dorothy Smith; and brothers, Cecil and Henry Dixon, and Troy, Al and Earl Townsend. He had seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Winslow Elks Lodge. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. RANKIN, Mary Elizabeth, 82, of Catalina, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 21, 1996 at a Tucson care center following a brief illness. Memorial and Interment Service 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 30 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave., with Rev. Louis W. Johnson, Tucson Baptist Church, officiating. Mary E. Rankin was born July 31, 1914 in Higginson, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.We will miss her warm smile, gentle manner and genuine sense of humor. Survivors:husband, Robert H. Rankin of Catalina; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Susan Maynard of Tucson, Larry and Kathryn Maynard of Arlington, TX, son, Douglas Kenyon of Catalina; stepson and wife, Dudley and Tommy Rankin of Chandler, AZ; six grandchildren; four-great-grandchildren; and niece, Bettye Baker and family.

TUCKER, Maxine, 73, died October 27, 1996. Mother of Bruce Tucker of Mesa, AZ, Keith Tucker of Tucson, Richard H. Tucker of Las Vegas, NV and Raquel Tucker of Tucson; five grandchildren also survive. She taught Physical Education at Benson Union High School for 19 years. Graveside Service 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 30, 1996 at Tucson Memorial Park, South Lawn, with Bishop Lee Walker conducting. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

CONTRERAS, Francisco J., 50, of Tucson, passed away October 26, 1996. Survived by sisters, Guadalupe (Jose F.) Calderon, Felicita (Arturo) Morales, Lidia (Francisco) Martinez, Dolores (Jose) Mendivil, Ofelia (Rito) Gutierrez; brothers, Abraham (Amada) Contreras, Clemente Contreras. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 1996 from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. DELISLE, Richard L., 59, husband of Lorraine E. (Larose) Delisle, a resident of 7863 S. Cardinal, Tucson, died October 25, 1996 at the New England Medical Center in Boston, MA. Born in Lowell, MA on April 5, 1937, he was a son of the late Leo J. and Regina Delisle. A resdident of Tucson the past 23 years, he was employed as a driver with J.B. Hunt Transportation Co. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. Surviving him besides his wife of 41 years are two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Rachel R.) Taynor of Lowell, MA and Mrs. John (Therese E.) Jackowski of Hobart, IN; three sons, Richard L. Jr. of Tucson, David A. of Hobart, IN and Michael D. of Tucson. Also three sisters, ten grandchildren and a great granddaughter.

ESTRADA, Maria Jesus, 99 of Tucson, died October 26, 1996. She is survived by her sons, Santiago S. Estrada of Redondo Beach, CA and Gregorio Estrada; daughter-in-law Mary Estrada of Tucson; grandsons, Rosalio S. Estrada, Edward L. Estrada, Luis Estrada, Michael Estrada and Jimmy Estrada; granddaughters, Sylvia Cantu, Karen Estrada and Yvonne Lowinger; ten great grandchildren. Predeceased by son, Rosalio Estrada on December 6, 1986. Private graveside services in Holy Hope Cemetery. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY.

GUERRANT, Sewell Courtney, 80, passed away on October 25, 1996. He is survived by his loving wife, Bessie Hughes Guerrant and his daughter, Mary Courtney Guerrant. A native of Richmond, VA, he and his family moved to Tucson in 1989. Private services will be held at his home. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee.

HAAKSMA, John, 85 of Tucson formerly of Chicago Heights, IL, died October 26, 1996. Survivors include beloved companion, Erma Parker; children, Lorraine P. Gross, Nancy Roecker, Paul G. Haaksma; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren plus many beloved friends and family.
