Don was born on January 31, 1923 in Oklahoma City. After receiving an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Oklahoma, he served in the United States Navy from 1943-45. He saw action in the Pacific, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf. After the end of the war, Don returned to the University of Oklahoma and earned a Ph.D in mathematics. His long and productive teaching and research career in mathematics began with a brief stay at Ohio State University, followed by 30 years at the University of New Mexico. His research focused on Real Algebraic Geometry. His colleagues remember his research successes, including the 'real nullstellenstaz,' an attempt to find an easier solution to Hilbert’s 17th problem. His mathematics work is documented in Number 155 of the Contemporary Mathematics Series of the American Mathematical Society (1994). This book, entitled 'Recent Advances in Real Algebraic Geometry and Quadratic Forms' is dedicated to Professor Dubois. His family recalls with particular pride Don’s ability to combine research and dedicated teaching with a concern for larger political and social issues, including, in the university community, support for affirmative action. Don’s mathematics connections and his efforts to organize international conferences, especially involving a group of young Spanish mathematicians, which he called 'the new Spanish Armada, ' led to life-long attachments and memories, which included family hiking trips in the Pyrenees and Picos de Europa in Spain and various mountain treks in the U.S. After his retirement from UNM, he spent three years in Seattle, during which time he took creative writing classics at the University of Washington and produced many stories and essays that reflected his keen observation of the natural world. After moving to Tucson in 1988, Don renewed his hobby of making and collecting spinning tops, and his earlier love of painting and sculpture. He began making 'assemblages, ' constructed of recycled metal, 'found objects, ' rocks, dried plants, and other bits and pieces from the desert. His art, like his life, showed his wide-ranging interests, love of nature (including his two cats), and whimsical sense of humor. His family wishes to thank all of the friends and caregivers who shared their love and support during some very difficult times. No services are planned but private memorial gatherings of family and friends will be held both in Tucson and Albuquerque. Donations in his name may be made to the Southern Arizona Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Foundation and to the Carondelet Hospice Services.
