Survived by father, Oscar Soto; daughters, Francisca Soto, Mireya Soto, Andrea Soto, Estrella Soto, Reyna Soto; sons, Fernando Soto, Adrian Soto, Arturo Soto; sisters, Lucia (Jose), Alicia (Reynaldo), Guillermina (Eugenio), Imelda (Arturo), Berta (Eugenio); brothers, Oscar, Norberto (Enedina), Humberto (Dora). Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 1997 from 5:00 p.m. to Mass time at 1626 S. Cherry with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Wednesday, May 21, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. at Santa Cruz Church, 1220 S. 6th Ave. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. TALBOT, Raymond, 92, of Tucson, died May 11, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Hilda. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2:30 p.m. at Desert Garden Health Care Activity Room, 2502 N. Dodge Blvd. Interment will be held in Massachusetts. Directed by VALLEY FUNERAL HOME.

YANCEY, Thomas H., III, died May 15, 1997. Beloved infant of Tommy and Graciela Yancey, Jr. and grandparents, Tom Yancey, Lucia Sidoma, Inez Villa, and Jerry Camacho. Friends may visit 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 20 at ARIZONA MORTUARY, 7 E. University. Rosary at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery.

BLACKMAN, Paula, Jessica and Sarah Passed away May 6, 1997. Paula was born March 13, 1953 in Windsor, Canada. She was raised in Tucson, went to Rincon High School and trained as a trauma physician achieving her degree through numerous scholarships at the University of Arizona Medical School. She interned at Harbor General Hospital in Los Angeles. She practiced as an Emergency Room doctor at El Dorado Hospital in Tucson and also at E.T. Jones Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Paula was highly respected and admired by her fellow workers. She was also a very creative and talented artist. Jessica was born January 15, 1985 in Torrance, California and Sarah was born June 27, 1986 in Tucson. Both girls attended schools in Atlanta, Georgia and Phoenix, Arizona. The children excelled in all their schooling and their personal endeavors and loved the outdoors, camping out with their parents on many occasions. Jessica and Sarah were both excellent equestriennes winning many ribbons while living in Atlanta. Paula was preceded in death by her father. Survived by her mother Joyce J. Quarto who is also the grandmother of Jessica and Sarah. Survived also by many aunts and uncles. They will be mourned by all who knew them. Memorial services were held at the Hansen Mortuary in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, May 10th, 1997 with cremation following at a later date. Because of their scholastic excellence, the family has suggested donations be made to the SCHOLARSHIP FUND of the Pantano Exchange Club, P.O. Box 17374, Tucson, Arizona 85731.

BRUSHMILLER, John G., 65, died May 16, 1997. Husband of Mary P. Brushmiller. Memorial Mass, 8:00 a.m., Monday, May 19, 1997 at St. Thomas the Apostle, 5150 N.Valley View Rd. Mr. Brushmiller was a U.S. Army Veteran. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

CARTER, Lois Emily, 93, born October 30, 1903 in Fairfield, IL, died May 14, 1997 in Tucson. Lois was predeceased by her parents, Woodrow Carter and Mary Humphrey Carter and two brothers. She moved to Tucson in 1968 after retiring from the Warren Public School System in Warren, MI where she taught for 47 years. She received her teaching certificate from Illinois Normal and her advanced degrees from Wayne State University in Michigan. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.Memorial Service, 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 20, 1997, in the Memorial Garden at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 8051 E. Broadway. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

GOMEZ, Luz, 91, of Tucson, passed away May 15, 1997. Preceded in death by husband, Jose and children, Rod and Socorro. Survived by daughters, Lucy (Peter), Mary Lou (Eusebio), Rosalva (Jose); sons, Ray (Linda) and Joe (Betty); 24 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 19, 1997 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Tuesday, May 20, 1997 at St. John’s Church, 602 W. Ajo Way. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. HIX, Barbara H., 78, died May 14, 1997. Mother of Rudolf (Cheryl) Hicks of Tucson; sister of Anneliese Scheurich of Rancho Cucamonga, CA and Werner Diehl of Hemet, CA; grandmother of Erik and Emily Hicks. Funeral Service, 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 18, 1997 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, with Rev. Harold N. Kallio officiating. HOFFMAN, Charles Thomas, died at his home in Arivaca, AZ on May 9, 1997 at the age of 43. He was born in Germany and came to Tucson when he was three years old. He graduated from Salpointe High School in Tucson and later joined the Army. He served in Korea where he earned the National Defense Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and was classified as a Rifle sharpshooter and a grenade sharpshooter. Upon his discharge from service he returned to Tucson where he worked as a cabinet maker, woodworker and landscaper. He later moved to Arivaca where he followed his same trade until his death. Survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Hoffman of Prescott; his sister, Mrs. R. A. Hocevar of Atlanta, GA and three daughters, Mary, Jennifer and Waverly, all of Sahuarita, AZ. A Memorial Mass will be offered on Wednesday, May 21, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. at St.Ferdinand’s Catholic Church, Arivaca, AZ. The Reverend Father Robert Hyman officiating. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

KAZDA, Dorothy M., (nee Verdak), died in peace and grace on May 14, 1997, one month shy of her 82nd birthday. Preceded in death by her darling husband Frank J.Beloved to her children, Tom, Peg, Jim and Mary Ellen (Frank C. Pierson); a brother and sister-in-law survive her as well as grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and garage sales. She lived in Green Valley and knew her life was blessed. Her Wake and Burial will be held May 19-20 Kuratko Funeral Home, 2500 S. Des Plaines Ave., N. Riverside, IL. Memorials may be made to her Church St. Martin de Porres, Sahuarita, AZ or to Hospice Family Care, Green Valley.

MCDERMOTT, Alvera C., 76, died Thursday, May 15, 1997. She was born July 23, 1920, in Philadelphia, PA. She is survived by husband, Albert, of Tucson; daughters Barbara (Gary) Beck of Tucson and Ann (Richard) Jordan of Farmersville, TX; son, Albert F. 'Mac' (Barbara) McDermott of Tulake, CA; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and three step grandchildren. Alvera was a retired crossing guard for Tucson Unified School District.

TELLEZ, Angel F., 88, of Tucson, passed away May 14, 1997. Preceded in death by his wife, Ysabel and grandson, Ruben. Survived by daughter, Ophelia Fletcher; sons, Angel R. (Naomi), Jimmy (Joann), Walter (Czarina), Hector (Christina) Tellez; sister, Amelia Benton; brothers, Thomas, Frank (Socorro), Alfred Tellez; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Special thanks to St. Mary’s Hospice Staff. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary’s Hospice in honor of Angel F. Tellez. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 19, 1997 from 8:00 to 10: 15 a.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. WESTBROOK, Loy Mid, 89, died May 16, 1997. He was born September 28, 1907 in Chicota, TX. Married, Wilma Hamilton, Sapulpa, OK, December 25, 1935. 27 years with Corn Products Company International, three years in th U.S. Navy, over 50 year member of Occidental California Lodge #1 in San Francisco, was a life member of CA Bodies Scottish Rite of San Francisco. Was also a member of Sabbar Temple of Tucson and Christ Presbyterian Church. Survived by wife Wilma Westbrook of Tucson; sister, Dorothy Baggs of Placerville, CA; nephews, nieces and many cherished friends. Memorial Service, 7:00 p.m., Monday, May 19, 1997 at Christ Presbyterian Church at 6565 E. Broadway, with Reverend Steve Melde officiating. WINTERHOFF, Walter J., 92, died May 15, 1997. Husband of Kathryn Winterhoff of Tucson; stepfather of Lois Pacheco of Tucson, William Lyall of Oxford, FL and David Lyall of Chattanooga, TN. He went to the University in St. Louis, MO for undergraduate study in mechanical engineering. Has a degree in oral surgery from Columbia University in NY. Past president of the State Dental Association. Is a Fellow of American College of Dentistry. He donated voluntary time to St. Elizabeth Clinic for many years. Practiced oral surgery in ST. Louis, MO. World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a Lt. Colonel. Was stationed at Davis-Monthan for a short time then was sent to South Pacific (Dental Air Force Division) during World War II. Moved to Tucson after WWII, started oral surgery practice here for over 40 years. Memorial Service, 4:00 p.m., Sunday, May 18, 1997 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

BJORK, Abner C. 'Nick', 91, of Tucson, went to be with the Lord May 14, 1997. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53, years, Elizabeth P. Bjork. He is survived by daughter, Nikki McCollum (Terry); grandchildren, Paige Carpenter (Mike) and Brent McCollum; two great-grandchildren, Brieanna and Brendon Carpenter. He was a resident of Los Angeles for 45 years and retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1971. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Tucson. Funeral Services will be held at Pantano Baptist Church, 225 S. Pantano, Saturday, May 17, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Barry Jude officiating. COSHLAND, Robert Lee - Was granted freedom from the physical restrictions of this world on May 10, 1997. He lived a life of passion – for his family, for his work, and for protecting the beauty and diversity of the earth. Born in New York City on October 27, 1909, he earned a Masters Degree at Columbia University’s Schools of Business in 1930. For 25 years he worked for RCA in government service operations, budgeting and negotiating contracts with the US government and British Air Ministry. Finding that work interfered with all his other interests, he retired at age 58 and moved from Haddonfield, NJ, to Tucson. he became an environmentalist, active in local and national organizations. For ten years, he represented the the National Parks and Conservation Association by testifying at hearings concerning inclusion of lands in the National Wilderness Preservation System. He represented the Tucson Audubon Society in the Arizona Wilderness Coalition. He challenged developers, both private and governmental, whose proposals threatened precious natural beauty of animal species or resulted in improper use of water resources. He and his beloved wife of 60 years, Helen J. Coshland, did much of their research from a modified Harvester Travel-all on Arizona’s backroads. They also traveled the globe; not as traditional tourists, but to experience nature and life in remote places; Alaska, Baja, Ethiopia, central and southern Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Australia, Tahiti, Greenland, and South America. An avid photographer, his travel shows helped to fund many charitable organizations. He was known for his great sense of humor and dry wit. He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter, Elizabeth Peasley-Fimbres of Tucson; son, Gilbert (Pat) C. Coshland of Reston, VA; grandchildren, Allison Peasley of Tucson, Jennifer Gibbons of Redondo Beach, CA, Sarah (Jean) Blanchard of Virginia Beach, VA, Karen Wickstrom of Salt Lake City, UT, Jill Jackson and Jeffrey Coshland of Reston, VA; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Joshua, Virginia, and Ryan. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 17th at 11:00 a.m. at Catalina Baptist Church, 1900 N. Country Club; Rev.David Wilkinson, St. Francis in the Foothills, officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Foundation of the Catalina Baptist Church or the Robert and Helen Coshland Memorial Fund of he Arizona Nature Conservancy, 300 E. University Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85705.

CROTHERS-MOORE, Viola, 70, of Tucson, died May 14, 1997. Survivors include: husband, Charles C. Moore; daughter, Jan Rose (Steve) Rhea of Jackson, OH; sons, Dan (Janie) Crothers and Jeffrey (Barbara) Crothers. Also survived by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Memorial Services will be at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, Saturday, May 17, 3:30 p.m., with Rev. Jim Howard officiating. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. GRANT, Howard Stanley, 63, of Tucson, died May 14, 1997. Survivors include: wife, Albertha; children, Kelly (Craig) Hansen, John (Fumiko) Grant, Joseph Grant, all of CA and Anita (Patrick) Schaap of the Netherlands; brothers, James M. Howard of Tucson and George E. (Peggy) Howard of CA; grandchildren, Danielle and Leah Hansen. Private Memorial Services were held. Memorial Donations may be made to Tucson Boys Chorus. LESTER, Teresa S., 40, died on May 15, 1997 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She is survived in sorrow by her parents, Ed and Sandra of Wichita, Kansas; her sister, Karen (Steve) Leftwich of Lenexa, Kansas; her brother, Matthew (Deborah) of Charleston, SC; four nephews, Eric, Taylor Leftwich, Tyler and Bryce Lester; and other caring family with whom she shared her life. She was employed at Hughes Missle Systems Company for the past 11 years, Gates Learjet for 10 years prior to that and her co-workers will miss her wry humor, dependability and integrity. A brief Memorial Service will be held on May 17 at St. Phillip’s in the Hills, River and Campbell, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Carondelet Hospice or the Humane Society of Tucson.
