BYRNES, Arvada L., was born January 16, 1923 in Kentucky. Her family later moved to Elwood, Indiana. She met her first husband, Billy, there as a teenager and they moved to Tucson in the 40's. Ten years later they divorced. She moved back to Indiana where she met Albert Calvin and they had three children. They too moved to Tucson. Arvada was always very active in the community, starting with the Post Office Auxiliary, then becoming president of Common Cause (helped to raise $225, 000 to straighten out campaign finance), president of Tucson Consumers Council and League of Women Voters (we kids did a lot of stapling, folding and licking of envelopes); however, family always came first and despite all her activities she always planned good meals for us. She was also quite a matchmaker and loved to play bridge, mahjongg, ride her bike, read mystery stories, plant flowers and enjoy her yard. Over the years she attended several churches – Christ Presbyterian, St. Mark’s and later converted to Catholicism and attended St. Pius X. She worked for Marshall Foundation for 15 years and created major changes within the organization as well as established medical benefits for the employees. Arvada was a very caring and giving person and she will be missed by many, many people whose lives she touched. How appropriate that she received such wonderful care from Hospice in helping with her husband Pete and his Alzheimer's disease as well as herself after contracting a rare blood disease called TTP. She was one of original advocates in bringing Hospice into Tucson 20 years ago, therefore her transition on August 26, 1997 was much smoother and gentler for herself, family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Pete Byrnes; her children, Sharron, Madeleine and Paul; and seven grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1800 N. Camino Pio Decimo, Saturday, August 30 at 9:00 a.m. Father Harry Ledwith presiding.

Spillios; niece, Sandra Lee Spillios; and nephew, Michael Andrew Spillios, all of Sahuarita.
Visitation will be held 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 29 at EVERGREEN MORTUARY, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile, Service, 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 30, EVERGREEN MORTUARY, Pastor Russell H. Dineen, Jr. Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sierra Vista officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.

Robert A. Castro, 34, of Tucson, passed away in his sleep August 25, 1997. Robert leaves behind his wife, Gerrie; his parents, Robert and Mary Castro; brothers, Richard and Michael; sisters, Doreen (Richard) Bejarano, Christina and Denise Castro; sisters-in-law, Mary Jane (Jon) Romero, Lorraine Scheid; and brother-in-law, Robert (Becky) Johnston; 10 nieces and nephews and 13 great-nieces and nephews. We will all miss Robert’s smile, laughter, jokes, bowling stories and tall tales. A brief service will be held on Friday, August 29, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Hope Cemetery, 3555 N. Oracle Rd. Arrangements by CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, INC.
