She and Milan moved to Tucson in 1969 for health reasons and were congregational members of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church until their deaths. Dorothy was honored by many national, state and local organizations for her extraordinary volunteerism, spanning more than 50 years. Since all three of her children were national speed skating champions, she and her husband first became very active on the National Board of the Amateur Speed Skating Union of the United States, and was inducted to their hall of fame in 1979. Upon their arrival in Tucson, she saw several critical volunteer needs for the new ”University Hospital”(University Medical Center) and co-organized their first ”Auxiliary Volunteer Program, ” serving as President in 1973. Utilizing her former retailing experience as a merchandiser and buyer for several large St. Paul department stores, Dorothy designed the original UMC Hospital Gift Shop, and served as its first ”Volunteer Manager” from 1971-78. In the mid 70's she created UMC’s Spanish Interpreter’s Program, which received national recognition and acclaim. She was a member of numerous clubs, organizations and societies including the Pima County Medical Auxiliary, Tucson Czechoslovakian American Society, Tucson and National Rose Societies, Angel Charity for Children, Inc, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Old Pueblo Lapidary Club, Friends of the U/A Library and the Tucson Museum of Art. It was during that same period that she received another distinguished citizen’s award from the Alumni Association at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. A year later, Dorothy was appointed a founding board member of the U/A Steele Memorial Children’s Research Center and became its first Public Education and Outreach chairman. Before Milan’s death in 1992, he honored Dorothy by designating a room for his beloved wife in the newly created research facility and was most recently elevated to ”Life Membership” status by the center’s advisory board. One of her most prized possessions and accomplishments was to have received the prestigious”Hon Kachina Award–One of 12 Who Care” throughout the state of Arizona, which was presented by the St. Luke’s Men’s Awards Committee at St. Luke’s Health System in Phoenix in 1988. University Medical Center honored Dorothy’s innovative volunteer services in 1991 by establishing the ”Dorothy F. Novak Distinguished Volunteer Award, ” now in its sixth year, for people who have served as volunteer role models, both at UMC and in the Tucson community. ”Her skill, as well as her philosophy of life was in her ability to recognize the elements in any organization that are needed to improve its function and the compulsive initiative to motivate (others toward) the development of those needs, ” said her son Raymond. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 1997 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 750 W. Chapala Drive at Paseo Del Norte.
