SMITH, Samuel James. God looked around his garden and found an empty place; He then looked down upon the Earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering and He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never get well on this Earth again. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb. He closed your weary eyelids and whispered ”Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you, Sam, but you didn’t go alone. Part of us went with you the day God called you home. Love you always, you will not be forgotten. Sam passed away on November 13, 1997 at University Medical Center, Tucson, AZ. Also known to friends as Jim, Sam was born August 27, 1926 to Samuel W. and Minnie A. Smith in Snohomish, WA. Sam is survived by his loving wife, Norma; son, Donald (Janet, son, Braden); daughter, Lynnae Waskom (Robert Fritz) all of Tucson; sister Jean Swett of Bremerton, WA; in-laws, Dick and Joyce Peterson, Fred and June Topper, Bill and Dorothy Ritter and numerous friends. Funeral Services and reception will be held Saturday, November 22, 1:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2509 Perry Avenue, Bremerton, WA, with Pastor Christensen officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sam’s name to The International Myeloma Foundation, 2120 Stanley Hills Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90046.

Joan Washington, 58, of Tucson, died Sunday, November 16, 1997. Preceded in death by husband, M/Sgt. Ret. Alton Washington. Survived by children, Cynthia Washington of Mesa, AZ, Teresa (Bernard) Plaskett of Las Vegas, NV, Alton Washington Jr. and Gary (Luzelva) Washington both of Tucson, Sheri L. (James) Riley of Chandler, AZ; sisters, Renee White of CA and Stephanie Ross of TX; brother, Michael Lindley and parents, Tom and Beatrice Lindley all of TX; seven grandchildren. Mrs. Washington served with the U.S. Army WAC as a medical specialist. Visitation, Thursday, November 20, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 East Grant Road. Funeral Service, Friday, November 21, 11:00 a.m. at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Chapel #1 with Rev. Clifton Price of Friendship Baptist Church officiating. Graveside Service to follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, with Desert Star Chapter No. 8, Order of Eastern Star.

WEBB, JOSEPHINE LOTT died unexpectedly, but peacefully at home, November 15, 1997. Born in Waycross, GA on July 3, 1911 to Dan and Willie Lott. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Donald Loomis Webb Sr.; sister, Mary Dean Lott; and brother, Jim Lott. Survived by son, Donald Loomis Webb Jr. (Jan) of Newport Beach, CA (sons, Donald and Cameron); son, Norman Lott Webb (Margaret) of Madison, WI (sons, Jim and Marc); son, John Preston Webb (Jamie) of Irvine, CA (son, John and daughter, Jamie); brother, Dan Lott; sisters, Katharine Marbut and Susan Clark; cousin, Elizabeth Puchta; eight nieces; nine nephews; 35 great-nieces and nephews; four great-great-nieces and nephews; and many close friends all of whom she adored and loved. She moved to Tucson with her husband in 1945 where her husband joined the U of A Department of Mathematics. She lived in Tucson with summer trips to St. Simons Island, GA and many other trips to all parts of the world interspersed. She was active in the community, most importantly to her were the First United Methodist Church and all it’s members; the U of A Faculty Wives Club (past president); P.E.O. Chapter E (past president); Trowel & Glove Garden Club; Colonial Dames; many bridge groups; and other volunteer organizations. She lived her life to the fullest and deeply touched her family and friends who greatly miss her. A private internment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 22, 1997, 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 915 E. 4th Street (85719). In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Don and Jo Webb Fund, First United Methodist Church or P.E.O. Scholarship Fund.

ARMENTA, Thomas V., 87 of Tucson, passed away November 14, 1997, leaving behind his beloved wife of 47 years, Frances Socorro Armenta and his two sons, David (Connie), Tommy Jr. (Sandra). He is also survived by seven Grandchildren and seven Great-Grandchildren. Preceded in death by sisters, Josephine (Manuel Lugo, Maria (Pepe) Romo; brother, Ernesto (Armida) Armenta. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 1997 from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY (South Chapel), 240 South Stone Avenue, with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m., Mass will be offered tn Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Avenue, Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. Mr. Armenta having lived in Bisbee and in Copper Creek, Arizona moved to Tucson and was employed by San Manuel Mine from where he retired after 25 years of service as a Blacksmith. Thomas was very active in Arts and Crafts in his later years. He leaves behind many nephews and nieces and will be greatly missed. Arrangements by CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY INC.

BECHTEL, Mary Lou, 65, died November 15, 1997. Wife of Harry L. Bechtel; mother of Harry T. Bechtel, Mary Beth Damron, Scott L. Bechtel and Amy D. Gustafson; grandmother of William T. Damron all of Tucson. Funeral Service, 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 19 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL with Pastor Larry Rice officiating. Burial in TMP East Lawn. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 18, at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

CASADEI, Gina A, 72, died November 17, 1997. Survived by her husband of 50 years Norino; daughters, Patricia (Ladd) Kleiman, Laurie (Gary) Gryder; sons, Michael (Rosemary) and John (Lori) Casadei; grandchildren, Michele, Michael, Daniel, Ben, Monica, Erin, Sam, John and Nick; Aunt Victoria Pagot; brother and sisters -in-laws, Joe and Mildred Casadei, Mary Cicala, Edna Scotta; long time friend, Mary Bogdan and many loving nieces and nephews. The family founded Mamma Louisa’s Lacantina Restaurant in 1956. Gina will be remembered by many for her Italian cooking. Friends may call 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be held at 7:00 p.m. November 19, 1997, at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Road. KAHN-YOUNG, Jane, age 57, of Tucson died on November 16, 1997. Mrs. Kahn-Young was born August 16, 1940, in Atlanta, GA. She is survived by two sisters, Patricia K. Cracchiolo (Joseph) of Tucson, AZ and Susan K. Bollin of Scottsdale, AZ. Two nephews, six nieces, two grandnieces and two grandnephews also survive. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 18, 1997, at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME DODGE CHAPEL (Dodge Boulevard at Speedway). Mrs. Kahn-Young was a member of the first graduating class of the College of Nursing at the University of Arizona in 1961. The family has requested that those desiring to do so may make contributions to the Scholarship Fund at the College of Nursing in memory of Mrs. Kahn-Young. KINKADE, Alwin L., 71, of Tucson, AZ, passed away November 17, 1997. Survived by his wife, Philys Nadine; sons, Edward, Bill (Patty); daughters, Leslie (Mike), Terry (Greg) and seven grandchildren. Donations to the American Cancer Society.

MEADE, Robert W. Gone from my sight one year ago, but not from my heart or memory. Each day I miss you more than the one just passed. Forever and ever, my darling, Lois.

MITCHUM, Joy A., Joy, a native of Phoenix, AZ born September 21, 1918 passed away Friday, November 7, 1997. She graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1936 as a National Honor Student and then attended University of Michigan. In 1939 she graduated from Good Samaritan Nursing School in Phoenix as a Registered Nurse. After raising three children while working as a school nurse for the Phoenix School District, she graduated from ASU in 1963. This is the same year she married Keels Mitchum, Assistant Postmaster, of Tempe. After Keels death in 1967, Joy served with Project Hope and practiced on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona and the Shop of Hope in Kingston, Jamaica. Upon her return from Jamaica, she attended University of Colorado where she earned her Pediatric Nurse Practitioner License. Her education and experience she returned to the reservation and established outlying Pediatric clinics and trained her associates. In 1978, Joy returned to Tucson and joined the Tucson School, establishing an evaluation program for special needs children. Retirement brought more time to spend at her beloved Hawley Lake retreat. The door of hospitality was always open and the cabin was full of the warmth, humor, friends and family. Failing health brought her to Phoenix to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She is survived by her brother, Ted Mieger of Phoenix; son, James T. Lewallen of Omaha, NE; daughter, Jeri Myers of Phoenix; and son, John T. Lewallen of Hampton, NH. A celebration of her life was held on November 9 with family. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Cancer Society or Alzheimer Association may be made in her memory.

MUNGUIA, Reynaldo B. 77, of Tucson, passed away November 16, 1997. Survived by, daughters, Grace (Armando) Corrales, Yolanda (Manny) Perez, and Debbie Chavez; sons, Ray (Martha), Joe (Gloria), Albert (Marina), Larry (Josie), Mike (Sandra) Munguia and Albert Munguia Jr.; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 1997 from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, SOUTH CHAPEL, 204 S. Stone Avenue, with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m., Mass will be offered Thursday, November 20, 1997 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Augustine’s Cathedral. Internment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. Arrangements by CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY.

Reynaldo B. Munguia died November 16, 1997. To Tata Reynaldo, I’m sorry I wasn’t with you when you died, I’ll miss you so much. I love you, Mikey.

NIELSEN, Arthur L., age 78, of Tucson, passed away November 16, 1997. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Kay. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Jennie; daughters, Marilyn (Dennis) Scheall, and Brenda (James) Voigtmann. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd., on Tuesday, November 18, 1997 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 830 N. 1st Ave, Wednesday, November 19, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. with burial to follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery. SOTH, Donald, age 77, of Tucson, Arizona, formerly of Erie, PA, died suddenly Friday, November 14, 1997 at Northwest Hospital in Tucson. Donald was born January 30, 1920. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Kibler); daughter, Carol of Patagonia, AZ; son, David and his daughter-in-law, Doris (Rodgers) of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Judy and son-in-law, Tim Barr of Northfield, MN; daughter, Jill of Phoenix and daughter Susan and son-in-law, Tom Kimmel of Ann Arbor, MI; a sister, Barbara Ledford of Green Valley, AZ; 10 wonderful grandchildren and his beloved dog, ”Poppy”. A Memorial Service for the family took place, Sunday, November 16 in Patagonia, AZ. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to the Humane Society of Tucson, 3450 N. Kelvin Boulevard, Tucson, AZ 85716.

SUCHODOLSKI, Petro, Lt. Cmdr, USN, Retired, born July 4, 1922 in Cleveland, OH to Theodore and Pearl Suchodolski, Petro passed away November 15, 1997 under hospice care at Veterans Administration Nursing Home Care Unit located in Tucson, AZ due to cancer. Preceded in death by his parents and brother, Alex, he is survived by his loving and caring wife of 27 years, Ann B. Suchodolski. Petro has three surviving brothers, William, John, and Michael; five children, Theodora, Anne, Peter, William, and Matthew; and six grandchildren with one on the way. Petro started his Navy career as an enlisted man in 1943 and his last military duty was as Chief Navigator for Project Magnet. His U.S. Navy career was abruptly ended in 1963 due to service-related injuries. Petro earned a B.S. degree from Ohio University in 1947. The family thanks from the bottom of their hearts: the V.A. Hospital staff for the kind, tender, and caring services which were provided to Petro during his last days; Father David Barr from Holy Resurrection Church in Tucson, AZ provided spiritual guidance to Petro for the past nine years. Petro’s family wishes his family and the hospice staff excellent health and happiness all through their lives. God Bless. Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, at Holy Resurrection Church, 715 W. Vanover Rd. Friends may call Tuesday, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME. TRASK, Frances B.57 of Tucson died November 14, 1997 in Tucson. Survived by husband, Robert Trask of Tucson; four sons, Robin Garafola, Bobbie Garafola, Ronnie Barrikman, and Randy Barrikman all of Tucson; two stepdaughters, Linda Trask and Vickie Trask both of Tucson; one stepson, Billy Trask of Tucson; three brothers, Tom Hacker, Melvin Hacker, Danny Hacker all of Tucson; three sisters, Patricia Brown, Linda Hacker and Annie Hacker all of Tucson; 11 grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. Memorial services for Mrs. Trask will be Thursday, November 20, 1997 at 6:00 p.m. at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway.

WESTERMAN, Katy, 89 of Tucson, died November 14, 1997. Born at the Stucker Homestead on May 16, 1908 in Rosebud, Illinois, Katy moved to Tucson in 1943, where she was employed by Steinfeld’s department store as the personal assistant to Mr. Steinfeld until his death. She continued on as sales clerk at Steinfeld’s, retiring in 1983 after 38 years of service. Survivors include her brother, Clyde H. Stucker of South Bend, Indiana along with three nieces. Friends may call at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Road, Wednesday, November 19, 1997, one hour prior to the 2:00 p.m. graveside at East Lawn Palms Cemetery with Harry Larson officiating.

WHITING, Orval B. Sr., June 4, 1939, returned to his father in Heaven November 16, 1997. Survived by his wife, Jane; son, Orval Jr., and family, Cheryl Ann, Craig and Wendy, Chuck and April; 12 grandchildren. Services at HEATHER MORTUARY, 1040 N. Columbus Blvd., Thursday, November 20, 1997 at 7:00 p.m., Pastor Steve Marquedant officiating.
