BROWN, Sheldon Merrill, 61, of Tucson, AZ, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 6, 1998. He was born in Brattleboro, VT, December 30, 1936, he was the son of the late Archie Brown and Astrid (Erikson) Brown. He was a former resident of Nashua, NH and Keene, NH before moving to Arizona 21 years ago. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, documenting the stars, and playing on his computer. He was the co-owner of Adobe TV, a TV and VCR repair shop. He is loved and missed by his two daughters, Laurie Brown of Merrimack, NH and Theresa Brown of Peterborough, NH; and his brother, Bradley Brown of Wilton, NH.

GILLASPY, Carleton, H. 84, died January 6, 1998. Husband of Helen Gillaspy; father of Larry Gillaspy. Mr. Gillaspy served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He retired from the VA Hospital in Tucson after 30 years of service. Mr. Gillaspy was a member of the Tucson Elks Lodge. Arrangements by BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott.

ISLAS, Rodolfo B., age 87, of Tucson, AZ, died January 9, 1998. Survived by wife, Elisa V. Islas; son, Rodolfo L. Islas, Jr.; grandson, Damian A. Islas; sisters, Grace Calixtro, Mary Santos and Natalia Bazurto. Affiliations: Civil service employee, machinist Long Beach Naval shipyard in Long Beach, CA, long time member of Eagles Lodge, Elks, NARFE. Services at 10:00 a.m., January 14, 1998. Visitation 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Rosary at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 13, 1998 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave., with Father Mike Martinez of St. Monica Catholic Church officiating. MARTINEZ, Ramona P., 91, of Tucson, passed away January 9, 1998. Survived by daughter, Ana Zabala; son, Jesus (Mary) Martinez; sister, Margaret Snyder; brothers, Modesto, Candido, Jesus, Edward Peralta. Also survived by six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 1998, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO’S TUCSON MORTUARY, South Chapel, 240 S. MORGAN, Marie, 94, of Tucson, passed away January 9, 1998. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy. Survivors include her daughter, Marian (Michael) Holloway; grandsons, Brad (Karen) Mylan, and Jeff (Sharon) Mylan; great grandsons, Ryan, Matthew, and Steven; and one sister, Vivian Watkins. Marie was a member of the Society of Military Widows and the Eastern Star. Graveside Service will be held at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, 5801 E. Grant Rd, Tuesday, January 13, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY.

James Hoyt Pannell, 77 Years old, died Saturday, January 10, 1998, in Tucson. Survived by his wife, Sylvia Pannell of Vail; three sons, James Pannell and John Pannell, both of Vail, and Jerry Pannell of Tucson; four sisters, Nellie Crawford, Inez Woodruff, Marie Yarbrough, Gladys Linton, all of Mississippi; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services for Mr. Pannell will be held Tuesday, January 13, 1998 at 1:00 p.m., at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E SPEEDWAY, with burial to follow at Desert Vista Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL.

VAN DYK, Edgar J., 85, of Tubac for the last 15 years, died January 7, 1998. Survived by wife, Mary Ann van Dyk of Tubac, AZ; daughters, Barbara V. Dale of Tucson, AZ and Virginia Huffman of Albuquerque, NM; step-son, Doug Mayhew of Tucson, AZ; stepdaughter, Anne Foster of Tucson, AZ; and six grandchildren. Edgar belonged to Tubac Historical Society, Santa Cruz Valley Art Association and Santa Cruz Valley Car Nuts. Private Services will be held. CARNES, Ronald K., 60, of Tucson, passed away January 5, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his three daughters, Debra (Jay) Murphy, Darlene (Jesse) Baker and Diane (Greg) Bertison; also survived by his three grandchildren, Bradley, Zachary and Hannah; also surviving are his mother-in-law, Beatrice Gess; his sister-in-law and her husband Patricia and Harry Saxton; his aunt and uncle, Corrine and George Steils; and his nephew Chris Martin. Private Services for the family were held. Family requests donations be made to the Arizona Kidney Foundation. Arrangements by ADAIR AVALON CHAPEL, 8090 N. Northern.

HUGHES, Juanita, 82, of Tucson, passed away on January 7, 1998. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Raul M.; mother of, Sylvia Baranski, Ruby (Dick) Zebas, Julie De Prinzio, Virginia (Dr. David) Gurland, Verona Gonzales, Christine (Jerry) Corlies, Lisa (Kenneth) Todd, Yvonne Johnson and Clayton Hughes. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her great-grandchild, Melissa Armente. She will be missed so very much by her husband, children and many sisters and brothers. We love and miss you. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at HEATHER MORTUARY, 1040 N. Columbus Blvd. on Sunday, January 11, 1998. A Rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m. A Mass will be at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 300 S. Tucson Blvd. on Monday, January 12, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at South Lawn Cemetery, 5401 South Park. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

LEDBETTER, Donald Leon, 70, died January 3, 1998. Born in Ullin, IL June 3, 1927, Mr. Ledbetter was a former Staff Sergeant with the United States Marine Corps serving faithfully in China and later in Quito, Ecuador. He was employed by RCA Service Company in Washington, D.C. before moving to Tucson with his family in 1963. An accountant, Mr. Ledbetter was employed by American Atomics Corporation and Cyprus Pima Mining Company. He is survived by his sons, Steven Vincent Ledbetter of Tucson, and Craig Allen (Karen) Ledbetter of Clovis, CA; two grandsons, Kyle Ryan and Eli Allen of Clovis, CA. The wishes of his sons are that donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.

LYMAN, Ross Crawford Sr., 83, of Tucson, passed away on January 9, 1998. Survivors include loving wife of 59 years, Dorothy; two sons, Ross Jr. (Katherine), John (Linda); one daughter, Judith Ann (Larry William) Moon; six grandchildren, Steven Moon, Teresa Moon, Ellen Franzone, Andrew Lyman, Christina Lyman, Sarah Rachel Lyman; and one great-grandchild, Ryan Moon. Mr. Lyman was a business man in Champagne, IL, and finished his career as Director of Financial Aid at Eastern, IL, University in Charleston, IL. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree of Business in 1938 from The University of Illinois, and a Masters Degree from Indiana State University. He served as a Captain in WWII US Army Air Corps Air Transportation. Ross was a Mason. He was a life member of the Charleston, IL Lodge #35 AFAM. And a member of Christ Church United Methodist. He and his wife retired to Tucson several years ago. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd., Sunday, January 11, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Rebecca Oakes-Long officiating. Memorial donations may be made to The American Lung Association in Ross’s name.

MANLEY, Paul Patrick Sr., age 78, resident of Tucson, died January 7, 1998. Paul was born in Youngstown, Ohio. He was a board member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Arizona. Survivors include his daughter; Kit Vanderhoff; sons, Pat, Michael and Terry Manley; sister, Mary Jane August; brother, Gene Manley; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Visitation at 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at WHITNEY & MURPHY ARCADIA FUNERAL HOME, 4800 E. Indian School Rd, Phoenix. OLEA, Henry R., 78, of Tucson, passed away January 6, 1998. Preceded in death by son, Henry Olea Jr. Survived by wife, Emelina Olea; son, Rey (Gloria) Olea; sister, Tonia Chacon; brother, Pete Olea; grandchildren, Rey-Michael, Gabriel, Katrina and Daniel Olea; great-grandson, Nathan Olea.
Dear Tata, You were a beloved man. A man who enjoyed his life to the fullest. You were a devoted husband and father, a loving and kind grandfather and great-grandfather to a family that loved you dearly. Even though you’ve left us, your spirit, love and memories will be with us forever. We love you Tata. May God bless you and keep you in his care. - Your Grandchildren.

RICHARDSON, John J. Jr., 73, died January 8, 1998. Husband of Bonita ”Bonnie” Richardson; father of Edward John (Karissa Ann) Richardson, Barbara (John P.)Summerville; grandfather of Nicole Marie, Mason Philip, Melissa Ann and Tyler John. Served in the Navy during WWII and was a Tucson resident for 25 years. Funeral Service 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 12, 1998 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL. SMITH, Ruth Frances, died January 8, 1998. She was born May 4, 1910 in Indianapolis, IN to parents Roy Alvin Smith and Anna Marie Goekler Smith. She was preceded in death by parents and sisters, Ethel Cox and Esther Beem. She is survived by nieces, Marjorie Ann Swiss, Houston, TX and LaDonna Hoinash, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, and nephew Dale Cox, Indianapolis, IN. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University and a Masters degree from Ohio University. Miss Smith retired from TUSD where she was a teacher, guidance counselor, and dean of students. She resided in Arizona from 1945 to the present, being very active in Delta Kappa Gamma, president of TEA, a member of the National Board of Directors for AARP, and served on state legislative committees for the Arizona Retired Teachers Association. At her request, no services will be held. Final resting place will be in Indianapolis, IN. Local arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.
