Phoebe Ellen Roath, 68, of Tucson, passed away Sunday, February 22, 1998. She was born August 2nd, 1929 in Newburgh, NY, retiring from Rohr Industries, Riverside, CA in August, 1991. Phoebe took the pieces of two broken families and made a stable family for 40 years and building, leaving husband, George; stepdaughter, Karen Roath; daughters, Sharon Pillon and Annette Cornell; two sisters, Helen Anderson and Alice Rier; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and the loving congregation at Peace Lutheran. She was the consummate military wife, eager for the next duty station and giving aid and comfort in the crisese. She made the Coast Guard a wonderful adventure for her family. Niece Barbara said her Aunt Phoebe took everyone at face value, inspiring the following: Walk among and minister to the unrighteous for we are all sinners. But seek the company of those who seek the company of the Lord. Join the church for they will build you up with their love, and you will do the same for them. If they love the Lord the Lord is there. Does it matter where. Services are held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 26 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave.

SEPTOFF, Samuel Joseph, born December 25, 1911, died February 24, 1998. Born in Brooklyn, NY, served in the Army during WWII, spent most of his life in the produce business in Albuquerque, NM. He retired to Tucson in 1990. Survived by daughter, Louise (Marshall) Fealk; grandchildren, Franci, Michelle and Marc; sister, Eva Femiani; brother, Paul Septoff. ATKINSON, Charles Franklin, lost his courageous fight with A.L.S. on February 23, 1998 in Tucson, AZ. Frank is survived by three children, sons, Chuck and Clifford; daughter, Colleen and four grandchildren. Frank retired to Tucson after serving 24 years in the U.S. Army as a Command Sergeant Major. Loved so much by his family and friends he will be greatly missed. Arrangements by ARIZONA MORTUARY.

CHICO, Mary Jane, 49, of Tucson, passed away February 24, 1998. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 26, 1998, 5:00 p.m. at Miss Chico's residence, 8216 S. Vaya Woe. With Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered Friday, February 27, 1998 at 7:00 a.m. at San Xavier Mission. Interment to follow at San Xavier Mission Cemetery. DUNN, Elden Dale, age 83, died on Monday, February 23, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Irene R. Dunn of Tucson; one son, Dennis Dunn of Kenosha, Wisc; two daughters, Donna Hillman of Mayfield, KY and Diane Dittmer of Avon Lake, Ohio; one sister, Mary Jane Miles of Stanton, IL; three grandsons, three granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Mr. Dunn was a lifemember of the 361st Infantry Assn. WWII, member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #10188, Member of American Legion Post #73 and was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Tucson Chapter #4. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 25, 1998 at VFW Post #10188, 345 E. Roger Rd. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

IRVINE, M.I.T. Chemist, Dr. John Withers Jr., 84, died in his sleep Monday, February 23, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Fredna Tweedt Irvine and three daughters, Mrs. Mary Jane Haynes of Charlottesville, VA; Dr. Kathryn Hume of College Station, PA and Dr. Janne E. Irvine of Tucson, AZ. Born in Marshall, MO in 1913, Prof. Irvine graduated from the Missouri Valley College before going east in 1934 to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. with just enough saved for one year of graduate study. He remained at M.I.T. for 45 years. Receiving his PhD in Chemistry in 1939, he was a pioneer in radioactive isotopes. As a professor in the Chemistry Department, he and his group of scientists were responsible for producing radioactive materials used for medical purposes during WWII. In 1957-58 he and his family lived in London, England where he worked with the Office of Naval Research. In 1963, he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Gant, Belgium. In 1966 Dr.Irvine was made Executive Office of the Chemistry Dept. and held that position until his retirement to Tucson in 1979. Dr. Irvine had several hobbies to include raising orchids and serving as the first President of the MA branch of the American Orchid Society. He also collected oriental rugs and practiced gourmet cooking, a pastime he explained was a perfect outlet for a retired chemist. Contributions may be made in Dr. Irvine's name to M.I.T., Department of Chemistry, 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA 02139. Arrangements by family owned ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.

KOSKI, Bertha Mae, 80, of Tucson, died February 23, 1998. Survivors include her brother, Clarence ”Jeff” (Flora) Knox; one sister, Anna Lois Harris and four nephews. Funeral Service will be held at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd., Thursday, February 26, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior. Interment to follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery.

MEANS, Stanley Dixon, of Tucson, died February 23, 1998. He was born to Earl and Maude Means, June 7, 1907, in Gibson City, IL. After college at the University of Illinois, he moved to Tucson with his parents. His first job was with the Jaicks Paving Company who paved nine 1/2 miles on the Tucson-Nogales highway. During that time he met and married Edna Steinke in 1933. Stanley was privileged to work for many years as a sales executive for the great philanthropist, R.G. LeTourneau, inventor and manufacturer of heavy duty earth-moving machinery, in Peoria, IL. After retiring in 1972 he and Edna moved to Tucson. After Edna passed away in 1987, he later married Alice Corzine Crose of Tucson. Stanley leaves his wife, Alice; sister-in-law, LaVern Steinke of Bloomington, IL; a step-daughter and husband, Carile and Dan Neale of Tucson and a step-daughter-in-law, Lois Corzine of Tucson. He is also survived by Alice's five grandchildren and their families, including seven great-grandchildren. Active in both community and church, Stanley will also be missed by his many friends. Acharity golf tournament named in his honor is held each Spring by the Tucson Exchange Club of which he was an active member. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Tucson Exchange Club, P.O. Box 35121, Tucson, AZ 85740 or a charity of choice. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 750 W. Chapala Drive at Paseo del Norte, on Friday, February 27, at 2:30 p.m.

NEUMANN, Fred Frank, of Tucson, was born June 2, 1925 and passed away February 23, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Ursula; sons, Michael, Ronald and Fred; daughter-in-law, Laurie and grandchildren, Anthony and Larissa. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 27, 1998 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 5150 N. Valley View Rd. Respecting the family's wishes, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1636 N. Swan, Tucson, 85712 or Carondelet Hospice Services at St. Joseph's Hospital, 350 N. Audrey L. Simms, 43, of Tucson, passed away Monday, February 23, 1998. Audrey came into this world on August 12, 1954 in San Francisco, CA. She graduated from Fremont High School, Oakland, CA, June 1972. She was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 21 years. Audrey joined Calvary Chapel five years ago and became a very active member. Audrey prepared the monthly mailing of the ”Practical Christian Living Newsletter” (a prison newsletter) by labeling the newsletters and sorting them for bulk mailings. The newsletter was mailed out to 30 different states and encompassed 90 prisons. God used Audrey to speak to the inmates as she would mail 30-40 birthday cards a month. These were not ordinary cards as she personalized each card with a verse from the Bible. Many, many inmates would write to Calvary Chapel to let them know how the verse in the card was just for them.
As Audrey L. Simms had reached out and touched the lives of so many people, God has reached out to take Audrey to his Kingdom, to be at peace. Audrey is preceded in death by her brother, Roger Leiffer. She is survived by her mother, Hilde Leiffer of Tucson; father, Aubrey Simms of Goodrich, TX; children, Heidemarie Liddeke, Jennifer (Frank) Richarte and Adam Liddeke, all of Tucson; brothers, Walter (Irene) Leiffer of San Pablo, CA, Donald Carey of Tucson, Virgil (Kim) Dwight of Desert Hot Springs, CA, Jack (Susie) Leiffer of Weed, CA, Lonnie (Lisa) Leiffer of Garden Grove, CA; sisters, Glenda (Joe) McVay of Tucson, Amelia (Jim) Short of Riverview, FL, Lucy (Ted) Johnson of Tucson; uncle, Fred Woodruff of New York, NY; granddaughters, Robin Nicole, Rayshel Noel, Baptized February 18, 1998 at St. Joseph's Hospice; also many nieces and nephews. Audrey had struggled with brain cancer for three 1/2 years and during a recent visit with her neurosurgeon he told her she was a ”very noble woman.”Audrey's family and very close friends would like to thank everyone for their prayers, friendships, fund raisers and all the local businesses who donated for the fund raisers; also the Hospice unit of St. Joseph's Hospital. In lieu of flowers, Audrey would like donations sent to: St. Joseph's Hospice, Carondelet Foundation, 350 N. Wilmot Rd., Tucson, AZ 85711, in her name. STUDEBAKER, Ruth Lynne, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 1998. She is survived by her husband, William Studebaker; brother, Richard Archer; daughter, Kate Linton and four grandchildren, Shaun Torrey, Ryan Torrey, Cheyenne Linton and Jeremiah Linton. VALENZUELA, Maria Sierras, 81, of Tucson, passed away February 23, 1998. Survived by daughters, Maria Lourdes C.Solis and Fidelina S. Valenzuela; sons, Louis Efrain Valenzuela and Gilbert Castro; sisters, Belen S. Martinez and Laura S. Bojorques; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. ALONIS, Ralph William, 77, of Oro Valley, died February 21, 1998. He was born in Bayonne, NJ. Survived by his wife of 45 years, Mildred Burnza Alonis and a brother, John Alonis of Tucson. Ralph was a WWII veteran and a lifetime member of the Pioneers of Alaska, also a life member of Anchorage Alaska Elk Lodge #1351. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, February 26, 1998 at Santa Catalina Catholic Church, 14380 N. Oracle Rd. at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Gene E. Anderson 69, of Tucson, passed away peacefully on February 21, 1998. Gene was born on September 25, 1928 in McAlester, Oklahoma, the son of Roy Albert Anderson and Esther Lee Lovelace. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1950. While at the university he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He served as a combat engineer and cavalry officer in the 2nd Armored Division from 1951 to 1953. In 1956, he founded Anderson Engineering Corporation where he helped train a generation of local land surveyors and civil engineers, many of whom went on to start their own companies. He was a registered land surveyor and professional engineer who was active in the land development business until the very end of his life.

Gene's civic and political activities were extensive. In 1971, he ran for a seat on the Tucson City Council as a Republican from Ward IV. He had previously made a bid for the District 13 seat in the Arizona state legislature. He was a founding member of the Eyeopeners and Aztec Toastmasters Clubs, served as District Governor for Toastmasters International from 1969 to 1970, was President of Tucson Sunrise Rotary Club from 1981 to 1982, founded the Marana Cotton Rotary Club, served as the Planning and Zoning Administrator for the Town of Marana, and was a founding member of Faith Community Church in Tucson. He was involved in many charitable projects in Arizona and Mexico through his participation in Rotary International.

Gene was an avid hunter, fisherman, cyclist, and skier, who was most at home in the outdoors. He was a Christian who saw God reflected in the beauty of the natural world. He took great joy in spending time with his loved ones in such favorite places as Lake Powell, Puerto Vallarta, and the desert and mountains surrounding Tucson. One of Gene's favorite writers, Ralph Waldo Emerson, wrote that ”in the woods is perpetual youth.” Gene's lifelong passion for the outdoors kept him perpetually young.

Gene is survived by two former wives, Barnetta Anderson and Jeanne Bourke, both of Tucson; three brothers, Ben Anderson and Jack Anderson (Wanda) of Tucson, and Jerry Anderson of Phoenix; four children, Jeff Anderson (Elaine) and Ted Anderson (Julie) of Tucson, Amy Anderson Perez (Matt) of McLean, Virginia, and Erik Anderson (Lisa) of Providence, Rhode Island; and two grandsons, Hunter Anderson and James Perez.

His family and friends remember him most for his kindness and warmth, his strength of spirit, his enthusiasm, and above all, his sense of humor. For the last eight years of his life, he enjoyed the companionship of his dear friend, Bobbi Lefferts. Her love and devotion sustained him through a difficult battle with cancer.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Faith Community Church, 2551 W. Orange Grove Rd., on Wednesday, February 25 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be made to the Gene Anderson Memorial Fund at the Department of Civil Engineering, The University of Arizona. FRIEDMAN, Joseph E., 69, died February 22, 1998. Joe was born and raised in Suffern, NY and received his degree in Pharmacy from Fordham University in NYC in 1949. Along with his brother, Alan, he owned and operated drugstores in the NY/NJ area until he moved to Tucson in 1969. In Tucson, Joe was a highly regarded and respected Pharmacist and Manager with Defender Drug and later, several national chains, until his retirement in 1996. A true renaissance man, he was a master gardener, history buff, innovative cook, sports fanatic (especially Wildcats), beachcomber, big band music aficionado, avid hiker and desert explorer, and most recently, an internet surfer supreme, but, most of all, precious companion to his beloved and loving wife, Jane, with whom he shared 22 years of incomparable joy and the search for the perfect home-fried potato. This magnificent man lived each day of his life with tenderness, honor and great wit and that is the legacy he leaves to his children, Ron (Joni) and Alan (Claudia) of Oregon, Jay (Brenda) of Tucson, Stacey his ”peanut” (John) Higley of California; and his 13 grandchildren. Along with Alan (Annie Gay) of Tucson, Joe is survived by his brothers, Bill and John (Rita) of Florida. Heartfelt thanks go out to many friends and family members, without whom Joe and Jane could not have endured the pain of these last months. In keeping with Joe's beliefs, no formal services will be held. Anyone wishing to honor Joe's memory is urged to designate themselves as organ donors, so that others may have the opportunity to live this glorious life to the fullest, as he did. Alice Marie Gennrich Age 85, of Tucson, AZ, passed away February 21, 1998. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl A. Gennrich who passed away in 1990. Mr. and Mrs. Gennrich owned and operated a tax consulting firm for 30 years. She is survived by her daughter, Joan (Alex) Sheydayi; grandchildren, Tania (Harold) Litwiler, Peter (Susan) Sheydayi, Lisa (Neil) Sturtevant. Also survived by seven great-grandchildren. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. on Tuesday, February 22, 1998 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 1949 E. Helen, Wednesday, February 25, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements by family owned ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.

KORD, Jay (John Korjenewski), 72, passed away February 22, 1998. Beloved husband and father. Survived by wife, Mary; daughters, Sandra Korjenewski (Brinnon, WA) and Mary Massie (Tucson); stepchildren, Barbara (Jim) Wagner, Trina (Dale) Norris, Brett (Beverly) Shubart and Tracey (Ken) Daniel; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
