Preston and his wife Terry; daughter, Arlene Cook and her husband John; and four grandchildren all of Tucson; brother, Sam; and sisters Hattie, Noralee and Mary Ella all of Nicholasville, KY.Private services were held. SCAFEDE, Lucille Britt, 80, died September 25, 1998. Survived by children, Ronald (Jackilyn) Scafede; Mary-Jean (Dave) Koch, Paul (Terri) Scafede; grandchildren, Adam and Bryan, Brigitte and Chelsea Scafede, Hollie, Ben and Meghan Koch; sister, Ethel Miller. Lucille was a Past President of the Women's Club, member of Presidents Club of Tucson, Odd Fellows and Naomi Rebbecca Lodge, Majority Member of the International Order of Jobs Daughters, as well as Beta Sigma Phi and the Pinecrest Bridge Club for 30 plus years. Friends may call 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 30, 1998 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd. where funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 1, 1998. SHIELDS, Lonnie Dean, of Colorado Springs, died September 26, 1998 at the age of 89. She was born in Shaw, Mississippi and had lived there and in Tucson, AZ. until coming to Colorado Springs in 1978. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and had been active in the neighborhood enrichment for women program sponsored by the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Lee Shields, Sr. in 1973 and by a son, 1st Lt. Everett Lee Shields Jr. in 1953. She is survived by a son, Dr. Walton Foster Shields of Colorado Springs and a granddaughter, Angelique Quaknine and three great-granddaughters, Celine, Kathryn and Alexa Quaknine of Huntington, Beach, CA. A Memorial Service will be conducted by Dr. John Stevens at First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou St., Colorado Springs on October 12, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. Private Entombment was at the Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum in Colorado Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pikes Peak Hospice, 3360 Sinton Rd. #302, Colorado Springs 80907 or to Silver Key Senior Services, 2250 Bott Avenue, Colorado Springs 80904. STUART, Marie Catherine, 79, of Tucson, died September 27, 1998. She is survived by sons, Charles Stuart and Edwin (Sara)Walter; grandson, Steven; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Katie and brothers, Edwin and Cornell Kershaw both of Baltimore. Mrs. Stuart was preceded in death by her brother, Warren Kershaw and loving husband, Emmett. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society, 3450 N. Kelvin, Tucson, AZ 85716. WHITNEY, Alice, 27 years old, died Monday, September 28, 1998 in Tucson. Survived by her parents, John C. and Linda A. Whitney of Tucson; grandmother, Inez Whitney of Alexandria, VA; sister, Cynthia (Alfred) Armendiaz of Chapel Hill, N.C. No services are planned at this time. William F. Battaglia, 85, passed away on September 25, 1998 in Tucson, AZ. He was born in Meadville, PA on April 25, 1913, the son of Frank J. and Sarah A. McCabe Battaglia. He is predeceased by his parents and three brothers, Eugene, Leonard and Bernard. Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marie Antoinette (Poux) of Tucson, AZ and six children, Mark E. (Mary) of Benson, AZ, Carol A. Coon (Ronald) of Meadville, PA, Kathleen B. Crawford (James) of Benson, AZ, John F. (Linda – deceased) of Meadville, PA, Marcia Jeanne Wyman (William) of Rotonda, FL and R. Kevin (Norma) of Tucson, AZ, as well as 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Battaglia graduated from St. Agatha's High School (1929) and Allegheny College (1933) in Meadville, PA. A 38-year employee of the United States Postal Service, Mr. Battaglia served as Postmaster of Meadville from 1963 until his retirement in 1972. Following that retirement he began a career for several years selling real estate in Meadville. He was a life member of the B.P.O.E. and the Knights of Columbus. He was also active for many years in the P.T.A., the Pennsylvania State Grange and the American Cancer Society. He was a member of the parish of St. Agatha Roman Catholic church in Meadville and the parish of the Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Tucson and Our Lady of Lourdes in Benson. 'Popo' will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 601 East Fort Lowell, Tucson, AZ on Thursday, October 1, 1998, 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Battaglia asks that donations be made to the charities of the donor's choice.

BURNSIDE, Mary Jane, 103, of Tucson, died Saturday, September 26, 1998. She is survived by her sister, Marguerite Hackler and nephew, Joseph Patrick Hackler. A Funeral Mass will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 1998 at Villa Maria Care Center, 4310 E. Grant Rd. Interment will be in Beattie, Kansas. Friends may call on Wednesday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at HEATHER MORTUARY, 1040 N. Columbus Blvd., an Aftercare Mortuary.

CASTILLO, Ernest V., 80, of Tucson, AZ, passed away September 26, 1998. Survived by sons, Robert, Johnny, Alex, Freddy; daughters, Cecilia, Carmen, Angie, Jessie and Elizabeth; 17 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 1998 at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, North Chapel, 204 S. Stone Ave. 240 S. CHAVEZ, Ludim, 81, of Tucson, died September 27, 1998. Longtime resident of Tucson who retired from the S.P. Railroad. Father of David L. Chavez of Tucson, Irene F. Chavez, Irma M. Lerma; brother of Jaime and Humberto Chavez, Ruth Endlick, Naomi Murillo, Beatrice Angel and Oly Saucedo, all of El Paso, TX; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services and burial will be in El Paso, TX. Local arrangements by ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL, 3435 N. 1st Ave. (888-1111).

Joe Felix, 84, of Oracle, passed away September 28, 1998. Survived by wife, Felipa Felix; daughters, Maidie Gallardo (Joe), Becky Barkley (Tom) and Mary Buzan (Robert); sons, Joe Felix (Hortencia), Tony Felix, Eddie Felix and Walter Felix (Frances); sister, Frances Carpena (Alex). Also survived by 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 1998 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at St. Helen's Mission in Oracle, Arizona, with Rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. Mass will be offered on Thursday, October 1, 1998, 10:30 a.m., also at St. Helen's Mission. Interment to follow at Oracle Cemetery. Joe helped build many buildings including St. Helen's Mission, many Titan Missile Silos, as well as many in the Oracle State Park. (Alejos) Garza, Gustavo and Gilberto Galvan; grandfather of Adela Soledad Garza and Mario Luis Acosta. Rosary will be recited 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 1998 at BRING'S MEMORIAL CHAPEL. JENSEN, Vernon Hortin, 91, passed away on September 27, 1998 in Tucson, AZ. He was Professor Emeritus and former Associate Dean of the New York State School of Industrial Labor Relations, Cornell University in Ithaca, New York where he joined the faculty in 1946. He earned his Bachelors Degree at Brigham Young University in American History in 1932. He completed a masters degree in Economics in 1934 and a PhD Dissertation on a study of Labor Relation in the Northwest Lumber Industry in 1939 from the University of California-Berkeley. While writing his PhD Dissertation he was a faculty member at the University of Colorado-Boulder from 1937 to 1946. He was a member of the National Defense Mediation Board as a mediator and arbitrator for the National War Labor Board commencing in 1941. He also became director of the Wage Stabilization Board – Rocky Mountain Division during that same time. He authored 'Lumber and Labor' (1945), 'Heritage of Conflict – Nonferrous Metals Industries Up To 1930' (1950), 'Nonferrous Metals Unionism 1932-1952' (1954) and 'Strife on the Waterfront: The Port of New York Since 1945' (1973). He also authored numerous scholarly articles on Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining. He was born on July 10, 1907 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He retired from Cornell University in 1973 and became a mediation and arbitration specialist for the next 20 years. He moved to Tucson in 1991. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Esther Chapman Jensen and his son, Vernon Hortin Jensen, Jr. Survivors include a sister, Gweneth Jensen (Parker) Traynor of Tucson; a brother, Grant Hortin Jensen, Brigham City, Utah; daughters, Karen Jensen Harvey of Tucson and Massachusetts, Margot Jensen Gasch of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Linda Jensen Hamlet, Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and a daughter-in-law, Judith Shumway Jensen Lambart of Richland, Washington; grandchildren, Helen Harvey (Mark) Chamberland, Kirsten Harvey (John) Thompson, Lars Jensen Harvey all of Massachusetts, Channing Darren Hamlet of Philadelphia, Brendan Hunter Hamlet and Tyler Jensen Hamlet both of Steamboat Springs, and Nathan Jensen, Joseph, Christopher and Steven Jensen all of Oregon; great-grandchildren, Arthur Chamberland and Madison Thomson. His is a member of the El Dorado Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. Memorial Services will be held at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway on Friday, October 2 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, Salt Lake City, Utah.

KOHLER, Elsie J., born June 26, 1899 in Chicago, Illinois and went to be with the Lord Monday, September 28, 1998. She was preceded in death by husband, Louis. Elsie is survived by her daughter, Myrtle (Harold) Hartmann of Tucson; son, Robert (Wilma) Kohler of California; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elsie was a 50 year member with the Eastern Star and also a member of Jerusalem White Shrine. Graveside Services 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 1, 1998 at South Lawn Cemetery. MARLOW, Jennie P., born March 21, 1910, Herrin, IL, died September 25, Tucson, AZ. Survived by daughters Dee (Ron) Sommer of Tucson and Sr. Joanne Marlow, D.C. of Evansville, IN., and son H.F. (Carol) Marlow, Jr. of Rock Hill, SC, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Funeral mass will be celebrated on October 1, at 8:30 AM at St. Pius X Catholic Church. McCLELLAND, Kristine Dru, 43, of Tucson, died September 25, 1998. MOORE, Ethel, 82, died in London, OH on September 23, 1998. Mrs. Moore had been a resident of Tucson for 52 years. She moved to Ohio from Florida after the death of her daughter last year. MURRIN, Smith D. 'Smitty' 55, of Tucson, died September 29, 1998. He was a Vice President of Marketing at Peoples Choice Communications. Survived by wife, Sherry Murrin of Tucson; son, David Murrin (Rebecca) of Ft. Worth, TX; brothers, J. Michael Murrin of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Jack Murrin of Houston, TX; sisters, Mary Painter of Hume, VA, Anne Scott of Gatlinburg, TN; and one grandchild, Riley Murrin. Memorial Service Friday, 10:00 a.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY. PHELPS, John F. Sr., born November 23, 1932, died September 28, 1998. He is preceded in death by wife, Rhea Dawn and father, Jess Phelps. He is survived by his children, Tony, Cheri and John, Jr.; six grandchildren; mother, Rose Phelps; sisters, Neva and Becky; and brothers, Dub and Arthur. A private family celebration is scheduled in the mountains John loved so much. Gifts may be made to the American Heart or Lung Association, in lieu of flowers.
