Vernon Elbert Gray
Vern Gray ended his struggle with cancer Friday evening on January 8, 1999, and moved from our sight to join his Lord and his wife, Delois (Miller) Gray, in their heavenly home.. With the death of his devoted Delois in 1981, Dad (Papa Vern) devoted his time between family and friends and continued to help those in need and the downtrodden. He was always ready to extend a welcome hand to those who needed help.
Vern was a gentleman and Christian all of his life. He was born in a earthen hillside dugout in the Oklahoma Territory on February 4, 1914, to Elbert and Fannie Gray, and, as a young man of fourteen, set out on his own and discovered much of the West. He rode the trains and lived a life of freedom seeing his country and enjoying the out-of-doors as a free spirit. As a young man, he had a fascination with cowboy life and worked at many ranches as a real cowboy. He loved working with horses and ranch work.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1942. He was trained as demolition specialist and served gallantly in the Normandy invasion and later in the Rhineland of Central Europe. His service during World War II earned him many citations and ribbons but he rarely spoke about his harrowing experiences in these battles.
After his discharge in 1945, Vern traveled through much of the United States before settling down with a job for the Southern Pacific Railroad. His job asa heavy equipment operator took him throughout the West and he became very knowledgeable of his country. He was truly a devoted 'railroad' man and enjoyed his work. He retired in 1979 after 30 years of service and he and Delois retired to Heber, Arizona, at their mountaintop home. Following her death in 1981, he continued to live 'up on the mountain', as he described it, until advanced age convinced him to join members of his family in Tucson.
Vern was employed by Old Tucson Studios prior to his diagnosis of cancer and he fully enjoyed his interaction with his co-workers and the guests, especially the children. His volunteer work at the Community Food Bank was special to him because it gave him the opportunity to assist those in need.
Vern was a very independent and private man but always devoted to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a free spirit and friend of all who encountered him. He is survived by a sister, Betty Hayes of Wildwood, Florida; daughters, Charlotte (Glen) Huffman of Tucson, Billie Jeanne Slack of Tempe, Mary Janet (Gary) Walker of Covina, CA and one son, John Brammer of Rio Linda, CA. He was a grandpa to five grandchildren and great-grandpa to six great-grandchildren. In addition, he will also be missed by several nieces, nephews and cousins. We all loved him dearly and he will be forever in our thoughts and prayers. His family and friends wish him Godspeed on his journey to his heavenly home. We will miss our champion among men and his wonderful smile and presence.
Memorial services will be conducted at at later date in February and his ashes will be interred in the Garden of the Apostles of East Lawn Cemetery with military honors and a Christian burial with a celebration of his life by relatives and friends. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, an Aftercare Provider.
