Virginia Smolinski, 77

SUN CITY - Virginia Dorothy Smolinski, 77, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, of cardiopulmonary arrest because of coronary artery disease at her home.

Born Dec. 12, 1922, in Detroit, she lived in Sun City for five years. She was a physical therapist assistant for Jefferson Countryside Home in Jefferson, Wis., for 25 years and volunteered for the Special Olympics.

Mrs. Smolinski is survived by her son, Gary Smolinski of Savannah, Ga.; daughters Sandy Smolinski of Menifee, Georga Ann Stilp of Orfordville, Wis., and Pam Pranke of Jamestown, N.D.; brother Richard McKlinsky of New Orleans; sisters Joan Funk of Sun City, Ann Pinegar of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Genevieve Pacer of Bullhead City, Ariz.; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Sun City. A private Burial is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 26704 Murrieta Road, Sun City, CA 92585.

Marion Hinesley, 74

MURRIETA - Marion Thomas "Tom" Hinesley, 74, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Inland Valley Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 13, 1925, in Huntington, Ark., he lived in Murrieta for 10 years. He was a driver/distributor for Arco for 30 years and served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1953. He was a member of the Colony Racquet Club of Murrieta.

Mr. Hinesley is survived by his wife, Filomena Hinesley of Murrieta; stepsons John Ewart of Murrieta and Robert Ewart of Oceanside; daughters Karen Harr of Temecula and Cathy Mann of Richland, Wash.; stepdaughter Marie Hamilton of Murrieta; sister Shirley Pulvers of Torrance; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. Burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Ruth Cartmell, 77
MURRIETA - Ruth Agnes Cartmell, 77, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, of congestive heart failure at Beverly Healthcare Murrieta.
Born Feb. 27, 1922, in Cincinnati, she lived in Murrieta for 10 years. She was a secretary for Safeco Insurance in Panorama City for 15 years and was a member of St. Martha's Catholic Church in Murrieta.
Mrs. Cartmell is survived by her husband, Robert Cartmell Sr. of Murrieta; son Ronald Cartmell of Las Vegas; daughter Caroll Hiatt of Murrieta; brothers Lawrence Koenig of Richmond, Ind., and Ralph Koenig of Cincinnati; sisters Rita Atkins of Cincinnati and Wilma Schuck of Brookville, Ind.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Frank Arasim, 85

SUN CITY - Frank Alexander Arasim, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Menifee Valley Medical Center in Sun City.

Born April 7, 1914, in Massachusetts, he lived in Sun City for 29 years. He was a government inspector for Civil Service in Long Beach for 20 years and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Lake Elsinore for 29 years, the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight and usher, and of the Lions Club.

Mr. Arasim is survived by his wife, Geralda Arasim of Sun City; son Ed Arasim of Sun City; daughter Maureen Herran of San Jose; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be recited from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church. Burial will take place at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Riverside National Cemetery.

Karl Berger, 78

SUN CITY - Karl Berger, 78, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Menifee Valley Medical Center.

Born Jan. 11, 1922, in Romania, he lived in Sun City for 11 years. He was an electronic technician for Magnavox in Torrance for 15 years and was a member of St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church of Sun City.

Mr. Berger is survived by his wife, Theresia Berger of Sun City.

Visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at Evans Brown Mortuary in Sun City. A rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at St. Vincent's Catholic Church. A Mass will be celebrated following the reciting of the rosary.

Burial will take place at Perris Valley Cemetery.

Mary Strong, 74
ESCONDIDO - Mary Joe Strong, 74, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in Escondido.

Born Feb. 15, 1925, in London, Ky., she lived in Escondido for 35 years. She was a homemaker and the founder of the North County Phi Betta Phi Alumni Club and the Escondido Panhellenic Club.

Mrs. Strong is survived by her husband of 55 years, Earl Strong of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law James T. and Lenore Strong of Escondido; daughter and son-in-law Beth and John Kennedy of Poway; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary in Escondido. A private cremation is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations to Vitas Hospice of San Diego, 8880 Rio San Diego Drive, San Diego, CA 92108; or the American Lung Association, PO Box 3879, San Diego, CA 92163-1879.

Vera Cooke, 90

RANCHO BERNARDO - Vera L. Cooke, 90, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000.

Born Jan. 19, 1909, in Buffalo, N.Y., she lived in Rancho Bernardo and Escondido for 10 years. She played the piano on cruises.

Mrs. Cooke is survived by her son, Gordon Cooke of Poway; daughter Barbara Sklar of Las Vegas; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A private service is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations to Palomar College Foundation Music Department, 1140 W. Mission Road, San Marcos, CA 92069.

Ruth Vanderwicken, 70

CARLSBAD - Ruth Vanderwicken, 70, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Hospice House in Missoula, Mont.

Born April 29, 1929, in Mason City, Iowa, she lived in La Jolla, Solana Beach and Carlsbad for 30 years. She attended USC and UC Los Angeles. She was a real estate agent with Charnholm and Associates in Del Mar and worked as a nurse's aid in several North County locations.

Mrs. Vanderwicken is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Neal and Susan Ninteman of Portland, Ore.; daughters and sons-in-law Debbie and Tom Bastian and Wendy Ninteman, all of Missoula, Mont.; sister and brother-in-law Susie and Gene Clark; grandchildren Josh, Maggie, Richard and Nate; and many friends in North San Diego County.

A memorial celebration and beach walk will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Solana Beach and Tennis Club.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Ruth Vanderwicken Caregivers Fund, Community Bank, PO Box 16167, Missoula, MT 59808.

Rowena Wickham, 74

ESCONDIDO - Rowena Willis Wickham, 74, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at her home in Escondido.

Born March 24, 1925, in Carnegie, Okla., she lived in Escondido since she was two months old. She attended Central School in Escondido and graduated from Escondido Union High School. She was a waitress at Wagon Wheel Restaurant for 17 years and was a member of Calvary Assembly Church in Escondido.

Mrs. Wickham is survived by her son, Bobby Wickham of Indianapolis, Ind.; daughters Mary Ann Cradock of Dania, Fla., Judy Cox of Irving, Texas; brothers Stanley Willis of Indiana and Ralph Willis of Texas; several grandchildren; and her companion, Grace Dale.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 9, at Calvary Assembly Church in Escondido, with the Rev. Floyd Freeman officiating.

North County Cremation handled arrangements.

Sarah Matson, 89

ESCONDIDO - S. Pauline Matson, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at her home in Escondido.

Born April 15, 1910, in Salt Lake City, she lived in Escondido for four years. She was an owner of Alameda Paint and Glass Decor and a member of the Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mrs. Matson was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Matson, in 1996; son Gail Matson; and daughter Mary Joyce Kimber. She is survived by her sister, Katie Lund of Vacaville; grandchildren Donald and David Harris of Escondido and Kathleen Chagnon of Baltimore; and great-grandchildren Marc Chagnon, Matthew Harris, Daniel Harris and Adam Harris.

A private memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 13. interment will take place at Oakmont Memorial Cemetery in Lafayette next to her husband and daughter.

Gilbert Hernandez, 79

OCEANSIDE - Gilbert T. Hernandez, 79, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, of a bowel infarction, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in La Jolla.

Born March 11, 1920, in Manhattan, Kan., he lived in Oceanside for three years. He was an artist. He served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army and was a G-2 counter-intelligence agent in the U.S. Marines during World War II. He was captured on Corregidor and spent 3 1/2 years in prison camps. He received a Distinguished Unit Badge with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, a WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, three Purple Hearts, and a Philippine Defense Service Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He was a lifetime member of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, the American Ex-prisoners of War and Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Hernandez was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Hernandez, in 1982; and his mother, Anita Shearer. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Margaret Gebhart Hernandez of Oceanside; sons Franklin Hernandez, James Hernandez of Oceanside and Thomas Hernandez of Redondo Beach; brothers Thomas Hernandez of Palm Springs and Daniel Hernandez of Lake Worth, Texas; and grandchildren Katrina, Jazmine and Tatiana Hernandez.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Oceanside, with Harold Weidner officiating. A private inurnment will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial donations to Rancho del Oro Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1930 Avenido del Oro, Oceanside, CA 92056.

Geneva Snyder, 85

ESCONDIDO - Geneva Arline Snyder, 85, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in Escondido.

Born Aug. 30, 1914, in Iowa, she lived in Escondido for four years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Carmichael Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by her husband, Luverne Snyder, in 1992. She is survived by her son, Jon J. Snyder of Poway; brother Stanley Oppedal of Sacramento; sister Dell Campbell of Portage, Ind.; and grandchildren Kari and Heidi Snyder and Andrea Burns.

A funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Mount Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks, with the Rev. Jim Clark officiating.

Mary Welch, 88

OCEANSIDE - Mary May Welch, 88, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Oceanside.

Born July 8, 1911, in Hutchinson, Kan., she lived in Oceanside for 64 years. She was a member of Escondido and Oceanside Senior Anglers.

Mrs. Welch is survived by her husband of 64 years, Vard W. Welch of Oceanside; sons Charles E. Welch of Sedona, Ariz., and Lynn R. Welch of Red Mountain; and four grandchildren Wesley Welch, Jon Welch, Nan Welch and Jason Welch.

A private cremation is planned with Burial at sea.

The family suggests memorial donations to the National Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. MIchigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60611-1676.

Marian Dillemuth, 85
ENCINITAS - Marian E. Dillemuth, 85, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born Sept. 28, 1914, in Omaha, Neb., she lived in Encinitas for 58 years. She attended Drake University and graduated from Kansas University. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and worked as a teacher and dean of girls at the Frances Parker School in San Diego. She was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

Mrs. Dillemuth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Eleanor Dillemuth of Escondido; daughters Susan Ann Carlson of Honolulu and Sally J. Terzo of San Diego; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A private cremation with scattering of cremains at sea is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations to Meals on Wheels, 930-C Boardwalk, San Marcos, CA 92069.

Leonard Schmuckle, 77

SALTON CITY - Leonard W. Schmuckle, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in Salton City.

Born Jan. 24, 1922, in New Jersey, he lived in Salton City for seven years. He worked for the San Dieguito Union High School District and served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945.

Mr. Schmuckle is survived by his wife of 16 years, Yukie Schmuckle of Salton City; sons and daughters-in-law Joseph Schmuckle of Oceanside, Peter and Beverly Schmuckle of Encinitas and Leonard and Lorna Schmuckle of Morongo Valley; stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law Douglas and Keiko Ito and Steve and Emi Ito, all of Valley Center; daughter Mary Anne Schmuckle of Vista; stepdaughter and stepson-in-law Caron and George Christison of Redlands; brother Charles Schmuckle; sister Colleen Helm; six grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. at Eternal Hills Mortuary. interment will take place at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.
