SAN DIEGO - Nettie Frances Langfels, 42, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at her home.
Born April 5, 1958, in Florida, she lived in North Park for 26 years. She worked for Molly Maids.
Ms. Langfels was preceded in death by her father, Roscoe Langfels, in April 1988. She is survived by her mother, Shirley Futch of Florida; sons Oscar Javier "Joey" Andrede and John Roscoe Lopez, both of San Diego; daughters Tami Mayer and fiance David Chenicek of San Marcos, Rebecca Mayer of Catalina Island and Sarah Laverne Lopez of San Diego; brothers and sister-in-law John C. and Ali Langfels of Colorado Springs, Colo., and David Futch of Florida; sisters and brother-in-law Joyce Langfels and Michele Courte, both of Escondido, and Brenda and Steve Hamilton of Kentucky; and granddaughter Lasha Chenicek.
A memorial service was held Thursday, Aug. 10, at North County Cremation Chapel in San Marcos. A private cremation was held.

Renae Dector, 70
BONSALL - Renae A. Dector, 70, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, in Bonsall.
Born Feb. 10, 1930, in Missouri, she lived in Bonsall.
Mrs. Dector is survived by her husband, Julian A. Dector-Burgos of Bonsall; sons William Moat of Arkansas, Ralph Moat of Canada, Robert Moat of Washington and Richard Moat; stepdaughter Violet Ayon of Anaheim; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 1, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Vista. Interment
will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.
Alexander Shortt, 54
CARLSBAD - Alexander Gilbert Shortt, 54, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Scripps Encinitas Hospital.
Born Feb. 2, 1946, in Montreal, Canada, he lived in Carlsbad for seven years.
He was a self-employed building contractor for 15 years.
Mr. Shortt is survived by his wife, Kevin Suzanne Shortt of Carlsbad; mother Pearl Shortt of Oceanside; sons Brian Shortt of Jamestown and Nicholas Shortt of Carlsbad; daughters Jennifer Shortt of Oceanside and Alexis Shortt of Carlsbad; brother Gary Shortt of Oceanside; and sister Maryatta Devlin of Prescott, Ontario.
Visitation will be held at 7 p.m., with a vigil service at 8 p.m. today, Aug. 30, at St. Thomas More Church, with the Rev. Peter M. McGuine officiating. A Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, at St. Thomas More Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Kieffer officiating. A private cremation is planned.

Johnny Navarro, 54
OCEANSIDE - Johnny Louie "Peanuts" Navarro, 54, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, of cancer, in Oceanside.
Born Jan. 28, 1946, in San Diego, he lived in Oceanside. He worked for Pacific Bell and served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Navarro is survived by his mother, Aurelia Avila of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law Johnny Navarro, Russell and Tyna Grant and Mark and Tara Grant, all of Oceanside; daughter and son-in-law Tina and Donovan South of Oregon; brothers and sister-in-law Fernando Martinez of Oceanside, Joe Martinez of Turlock and Amador and Kelly Lopez of Bells, Texas; sisters and brothers-in-law Mary and Don Fromberg of Oxnard, Consuelo Jaime of Vista, Teresa Avila of San Marcos and Mary Helen Martinez of Turlock; and grandchildren Vader Navarro, Myranda and Russell Grant, Brooke and Peyton Grant and Sage South.

SAN MARCOS - Catherine Ann Rushing, 94, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Dec. 12, 1905, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived in San Marcos for 24 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Order of Eastern Star of Vista, Chapter 556, and Monarch Chapter 24 in Teaneck, N.J.
Mrs. Rushing is survived by her daughter, Catherine A. Koenig of Redlands.
No formal service is planned. A private cremation will be held, with cremains to be scattered at sea.

David Mitchell, 92
RAMONA - David A. Mitchell, 92, died Sunday, Aug. 27, at a local convalescent hospital.
Born Sept. 8, 1907, in Indianapolis, he lived at Ramona Terrace Estates for 23 years. He worked for Allied Chemical Corp. for 30 years before retiring and was a member of the Amateur Golf Association, where he won the U.S. Open. He also enjoyed bowling.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife of 66 years, Althea M. Mitchell of Ramona.
A private cremation is planned.

James Longcoy, 68
ESCONDIDO - James Edward Longcoy, 68, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at his home.
Born Sept. 10, 1931, in Kent, Ohio, he lived in Escondido for 35 years. He was an electrician for Southern Contracting Co. for 37 years and served as a corporal in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He was a member of Consuelo Lodge 325 in Escondido and San Diego Shrine.
Mr. Longcoy is survived by his wife of 36 years, Helen L. Longcoy of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Larry A. and Gretchen Longcoy of Manchester, N.H.; stepson and daughter-in-law Jerry and Joan Roberts of New Orleans; brother Richard Longcoy of Landsdale, Pa.; grandchildren Alan J. Longcoy and Clifford Roberts; and three great-grandchildren.
A private family service is planned, with interment to take place at San Marcos Cemetery.

Veronica K. Hagen
Veronica (Ronnie) Hagen died on Aug. 28, 2000. She will always be treasured in loving memory by her survivors, which include her daughter, Sonya, and son-in-law William Dougherty of Tucson, Ariz.; her sister, Marina, and brother-in-law Ronald Worley of Poway, Calif.; her brothers, Franz Koglauer, and wife Rose and Hans Koglauer, and wife Fanni of St. Wolfgang, Austria; nephews and nieces Joseph Hinterberger, Brigitte Raudaschl, Harold Koglauer of St. Wolfgang, Austria, and Heidi Heidicke and Helmut Rulke of Rossleben, Germany; her special friend, Bill; her faithful companion, Nikko; and her dear family of friends in San Marcos and around the world.
Veronica was born May 24, 1925, in St. Wolfgang, Austria. She immigrated to Hopewell, Va., with her husband, Benjamin, in 1952. By 1983, she migrated west to San Marcos, Calif., where she has resided at Lakeview Mobile Estates.
Veronica was a true "giver" who touched the hearts of all who knew her. She was a mother and friend, treasured beyond compare, who will live on in the memory of those she leaves behind.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel. Interment
will be in St. Wolfgang, Austria.
George Opp, 65
OCEANSIDE - George Opp, 65, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Aug. 3, 1935, in North Dakota, he lived in Oceanside for 30 years. He worked for the Naval Weapons Station in Fallbrook and served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 22 years.
Mr. Opp was preceded in death by his wife, Masae Opp, on July 28, 1996. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Opp of Oceanside; sisters Cora Kitrell of Austin, Minn., Loretta Hanne of Lincoln, Neb., Clara Hoekstra of Northwood, N.D., and Ruth Mason of Prior Lake, Minn.; and one grandchild.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 31, at Eternal Hills Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at the mortuary. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

VISTA - Mary Jane Jastrzebski, 76, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, of bacterial pneumonia, in Vista.
Born June 18, 1924, in Cleveland, she lived in Vista.
Mrs. Jastrzebski was preceded in death by her husband, in February 1997. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Linda Jastrzebski and Richard and Connie Jastrzebski, all of Cleveland; daughters and sons-in-law Phyllis and Dave Tiffe of Cleveland and Sandra and Timothy Whetsel of California; grandchildren Mark, Renee, Timmy, Davey, Laura, B.J., Dawn and Heather; and great-grandchild Micheal.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Aug. 30, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Dolan officiating.

Donald Schaefer, 67
RAMONA - Donald J. "DJ" Schaefer, 67, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at a local care home.
Born Dec. 9, 1932, in Sioux Falls, S.D., he lived in Ramona for 12 years. He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954 and received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Ohio State University in 1963. He taught math and computer science at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, for 25 years, retiring as director of the academic computing center in 1988. He was a member of the San Vicente Community Church and enjoyed golf.
Mr. Schaefer is survived by his wife of 44 years, Alice L. Schaefer of Ramona; sons and daughters-in-law Mark and Marie Schaefer of Seattle and Stuart and Beth Schaefer of Vandalia, Ohio; brother Gus Schaefer of Santa Monica; sisters Darlene Holm of Garden Grove and Doris Norton of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren Ryan, Erica and David; and several nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. today, Aug. 31, at Bonham Bros. & Lee Ramona Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Mick Cupples officiating. A private cremation is planned.

Bruce Ranes, 17
RAMONA - Bruce Alan Ranes McNeeley, 17, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, as the result of a motorcycle accident, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born April 11, 1983, in Escondido, he lived in Ramona since 1993 and had lived in Escondido. He attended Rose Elementary School and was to attend Ramona High School for his senior year. He enjoyed family, friends, dirt bikes, fishing, shooting, hunting and bull riding.
Bruce is survived by his mother and stepfather, Cheryl A. Ranes-Sult and Mark E. Sult of Ramona; father Keith A. McNeely of Escondido; brother Phillip M. McNeely of Ramona; sister Rachel A. McNeely of Ramona; grandparents Albert L. Ranes of Escondido and Edward and Shirley Riley of Red Bluff; aunts and uncle David W. and Rebecca Ranes of San Diego and Jeannette M. Ranes of Ramona; cousin Christopher A. Ranes of Ramona; and fiancee Jessica Sullivan of Ramona.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Bonham Bros. & Lee Ramona chapel. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Ramona Nuevo Memory Gardens.

Arthur Magee, 74
ESCONDIDO - Arthur W. Magee, 74, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000.
Born July 11, 1926, in Hartford, Conn., he lived in Escondido since 1985. He served in the U.S. Navy as a signalman and in Underwater Demolition Team 13 from 1943 to 1945. He attended the University of Florida and worked as a sports writer and sportscaster for college and professional sports. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and the Black Cat Association, made up of members of his demolition team. He was a frequent contributor to the North County Times letters to the editor and the op-ed page.
Mr. Magee was preceded in death by two brothers. He is survived by his wife of more than 33 years, Rima Magee of Escondido; daughter and son-in-law Carol and Robert S. Hanegan of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Arthur W. Jr. and Sally Magee of Akron, Ohio; grandchildren Paul Anthony Hanegan of Escondido and Angela Magee of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and great-grandchildren Austin and Hannah of Colorado Springs; nieces Muriel Farrington of White River Junction, Vt., and Marcia Magee of S. Windsor, Conn.; nephews Frank Lee Magee Jr. and Walt Magee, both of Anson, Maine.
A private memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 2. His cremains will be interred with Navy honors on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

ESCONDIDO - Stuart Hamilton Reed, 81, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at his home.
Born Aug. 29, 1918, in W. Elizabeth, Pa., he lived in Escondido for 26 years and in Lemon Grove for 25 years. He was a self-employed plumber/contractor and worked for Ryan Aeronautical Co., Boeing Aircraft. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his wife, Leah Reed, in 1968; and grandchild James Reed. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary Lou Reed of Escondido; sons S. Dean Reed of Cameron Park, Douglas Reed of Escondido and Gregory Reed of Fort Worth, Texas; two stepsons; daughters Patricia Pangburn and Susan Dusharme, both of Escondido, and Carol Bates of Phoenix; one stepdaughter; brothers Barney Reed of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Bill Reed of Mount Lebanon, Pa., and Leonard V. Curtis Thornton, 62
SAN MARCOS - Curtis Wesley Thornton, 62, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at a local hospital.
Born Oct. 24, 1937, in Jacksonville, Fla., he lived in San Diego County for 45 years. He was a steam pipefitter for the Southern California Pipe Trades U.A. Local 230 in San Diego for 35 years before retiring. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a member of the Vista Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a volunteer with the Fletcher Hills Little League in San Diego and the Reid Park Little League in Riverside. He was a member of the North American Fishing Club, a Cajun food gourmet and enjoyed fishing in the Gulf Coast.
Mr. Thornton is survived by his wife of 15 years, Lynnette Thornton of San Marcos; mother Burnice Thornton of Franklin, N.C.; sons and daughters-in-law Darren C. and Debra Thornton of Gautier, Miss., and Mitchell R. and Juanita Thornton of Escondido; daughters and sons-in-law Michelle A. Gavaldon of San Bernardino, Robyn R. and Mark Doi of Temecula, Robyn Gavaldon and Amberly L. ESCONDIDO - Thomas C. Lambert, 67, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at his home.
Born Jan. 6, 1933, in Minneapolis, he lived in Escondido for three years. He was an electrical engineer for Titan Corp. He attended Leuzinger High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering at UC Berkeley.
Mr. Lambert was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie S. Lambert, in April. He is survived by his brother, David W. Lambert of Centerville, Mass.; sister Dolores M. Mendenhall of Pleasant Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Point Loma Tide Pool in Point Loma, with the Rev. Malcom Smith officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
