Elizabeth Griffin Farrar
Elizabeth Griffin Farrar, 94, a longtime resident of Palo Alto and The Sequoias in Portola Valley, died icon Jan. 27. Born in Grant Park, Ill., she graduated from the University of Illinois, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa. She and her husband, Harry, lived in New Jersey and San Marino before coming to Palo Alto in 1951. She attended First Methodist Church and was active in the University Club and the Alpha Club. She volunteered with the Stanford Hospital Auxiliary and was elected president of the Esther Clark Auxiliary of the Children's Health Council. She is survived by a daughter, Martie Rothert of Portola Valley; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services have been held. Donations may be made to the Children's Health Council, 700 Sand Hill Road, Stanford 94304.

D. Conrad Jarvis
D. Conrad "Connie" Jarvis, 81, a former athletic trainer at Stanford University, died icon Jan. 17 in Oregon. A native of Spokane, Wash., he attended State College of Washington. He served in World War II as a flight surgeon and met his wife, Vivienne, at LeMoore Air Base. He then went to San Jose State College on the GI Bill to become a physical therapist. From 1946 to 1968, he worked for Stanford's athletic program as a trainer and instructor. He served as a cultural specialist for sports medicine to the Mexican Olympic Committee. He also became the first director of the National Athletic Directors Association and a consultant to the San Francisco Sports Medicine Clinic. In 1989, he and his wife moved to Sunriver, Ore., where he was a substitute teacher at the Sunriver Preparatory School. He is survived by his wife, Vivienne Hansen Jarvis of Sunriver, Ore.; a sister, Dorothy Jarvis of Spokane; two sons, Stephen Jarvis of Healdsburg and Thomas Jarvis of Novato; and three grandchildren. Services are pending. Donations may be made to the Sunriver Nature Center.

Eileen O'Neil Kohler
Eileen Kohler, 40, a former longtime Palo Alto resident, died icon Jan. 27 in Seattle after a brief illness. Kohler grew up in Palo Alto, attending Van Auken Elementary, Jordan Middle and Palo Alto High schools. In 1986, she married icon Peter Kohler and moved with him to Washington state. There they lived on Camano Island, where she became a caregiver for many of the island families. She also had a lifelong affection for animals. She is survived by her husband; her parents, Edith and Philip O'Neill of Palo Alto; and three sisters, Betsy Elam of Texas, Alice Olsen of Elk Grove and Mary Childress of Palo Alto. Services are pending. Donations may be made to any organization that cares for animals or to a local blood bank. Blood donations are appreciated as well.

Hans H. Lie
Hans H. Lie, 86, a former Palo Alto resident and a former Mountain View City Council member, died icon Feb. 1. Born in Norway, he came to the United States with his family by way of Ellis Island at the age of 2. He grew up in Minnesota and attended Concordia College, where he met his future wife, Isabelle. They fell in love ice skating and married icon in 1940. In 1942, they moved to Sunnyvale, and both worked as machinists on the massive marine engines of the World War II Liberty ships. In 1948, they moved to Mountain View, and he went to work for State Farm Insurance. He served for several years on the Mountain View City Council. After he left, the city named Hans Avenue in his honor. The Lies moved with their four children to the Greenmeadow neighborhood of Palo Alto soon after it was developed and lived there for 36 years. In 1991 he retired to Boise, Idaho, to be near one of his daughters. He is survived by two daughters, Marti Lunn of Boise and Chris Siegel of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Rolf Lie of Menlo Park; and five grandchildren. Services have been held. Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1475 S. Bascom Ave., Suite 103, Campbell 95008, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Margaret Newport
Margaret Newport, 89, a former tennis coach at Stanford University and Castilleja School, died icon Jan. 6 in Oregon. She spent much of her life in tennis, first as a player and then as a coach. She grew up in Riverside and Berkeley, then went on to become a women's tennis coach. She first coached at the University of Wisconsin, then at Wellesley College. In the 1960s, she came to the Bay Area and coached tennis for Stanford University and for Castilleja School. She enjoyed spending time at the Foothills and University clubs, where she played pro. She was elected to the Lifetime Sports Foundation in Washington, D.C. During her retirement, she and her husband lived in San Jose, where she also played golf. She lived in Corvallis, Ore., since 1997. Services will be held Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. in the Montgomery Center at the Villages Retirement Community, 5000 Cribari, San Jose. Donations may be made to the Youth Tennis Foundation, 3701 Sacramento St., Suite 270, San Francisco 94118.

Sven A. Nylund
Sven A. Nylund, a longtime Palo Alto resident and cabinetmaker, died icon Feb. 3 at age 85. A native of Finland, he came to the United States with a tradition of Scandinavian craftsmanship. He founded his own company, Nyland Cabinets, which was located on High Street. He lived in Palo Alto for 40 years and attended First Lutheran Church with his family. He is survived by his wife, Martha Nyland of Palo Alto; two daughters, Eivor Bengts of Finland and Kristina Herrick of Fresno; four granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren. Services have been held. Donations may be made to the First Lutheran Church, 600 Homer Ave., Palo Alto 94301.

Vera D.M. Ressel
Vera Ressel, 92, a former longtime Menlo Park resident, died icon Jan. 25 in Salt Lake City. Born in Illinois, she married icon George Ressel in 1925 and moved with him to San Francisco. They later became apartment managers in Menlo Park, where they lived for 33 years. She moved to Utah in 1995 to be with her family. She belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She is survived by two daughters, Marilynn Garner of Salt Lake City and Merrilee Bailey of Danbury, Conn.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Services have been held. Donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Hildegarde Tolman
Teilheit Hildegarde Tolman Teilheit, 93, an author of mysteries, children's books and screenplays and a longtime Los Altos Hills resident, died icon Jan. 24. She graduated from Stanford University with degrees in Far East history and drama. In 1927, she married icon well-known author Darwin L'Ora Teilheit, a fellow student. Shortly thereafter, they traveled to Germany and witnessed the early rise of the Nazi Party. Back in the United States, they collaborated on several books, including "Fear is the Hunter," "The Rim of Terror," "A Private Undertaking," "The Assassins" and "The Double Agent." On her own, she wrote "The Terrified Society" and "Hero by Proxy," among other works. In her 70s, she joined the Associates of the Stanford University Library and later served as chair. She started the publication Imprint and continued her activities as a writer into her last years. She is survived by three daughters, Marta Holen of Los Angeles, Saral Waldorf of Vestal, N.Y., and Jehanne Teilheit-Fisk of Tallahassee, Fla.; and four grandchildren. Services have been held.

Marion Harper Beard
Marion Harper Beard, 85, died icon Feb. 18. Born in Globe, Ariz., Beard grew up in Taft and attended Stanford University, earning a degree in psychology. She graduated from Stanford in 1933 with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Beard went on to the Stanford School of Nursing, graduating in 1936. She studied health education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1937-38 and met her husband, Rodney, then a medical student. The couple returned to San Francisco, where Beard worked as a visiting nurse before they moved to Stanford in 1959. A life member of the NAACP and the Stanford Alumni Association, Beard also served as president of the Santa Clara County Visiting Nurse Association and in the PTA, League of Women Voters and Committee for Foreign Students at Stanford. Major interests for both Beard and her husband were music and travel. She especially loved singing along to familiar tunes. Beard traveled to every continent except Antarctica and enjoyed extended stays in Italy and Japan. She is survived by her husband, Rodney Beard of Stanford; three daughters, Julie Spickler of Stanford, Marian Beard Wehmeier of Sunnyvale and Edin Draper-Beard of Concord; a son, Phillip Beard of Santa Rosa; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services have been held. Contributions may be made to Peninsula Volunteers Rosener House, 1060 Middle Ave., Menlo Park 94025, or to Friends of Music at Stanford, Stanford 94305.

Lorraine Goodman Bennett
Lorraine Goodman Bennett, 80, a lifelong Peninsula resident and native Californian, died icon April 5. Born in San Francisco, Bennett graduated with honors from Lowell High School and attended Stanford University, earning a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1940. During World War II, she was secretary to the chief of surgery at Letterman Hospital in San Francisco. Bennett and her husband, Dudley, were married icon in 1946 and moved to Atherton. The family moved to Menlo Park in 1962, where Bennett lived until her death. A strong supporter of Stanford athletics, Stanford Law School, and the Allied Arts Guild, Bennett also enjoyed bridge, golf and traveling. She is survived by two sons, Daniel Bennett of Northridge and Stephen Bennett of West Lake, Ohio; and four grandchildren. Services have been held. Contributions may be made to the Stanford Cardinal Buck Fund, Department of Athletics, Stanford 94305, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Gilbert Peter Jensen
Gilbert Peter Jensen, 72, a Palo Alto resident all his life, died icon March 23. Born at the Palo Alto Hospital, Jensen attended Addison Elementary School and Jordan Middle School before graduating from Palo Alto High School in 1944. He attended San Jose State University. During World War II, Jensen served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation ordinance petty officer. After the war, he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 41 years. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Jensen of Palo Alto; two daughters, Linda Darling of Venice, Calif., and Robyn Kurtz of San Diego; four sons, Craig Jensen of El Paso, Texas, and Scott Jensen, Peter Jensen and James Jensen, all of Palo Alto; and 10 grandchildren. Private family services have been held. Contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 121 Second St., Second Floor, San Francisco 94105.
