O'DELL-FREEMAN

Fern O'Dell-Freeman

Fern O'Dell-Freeman died on Aug. 7, 2004 in Grass Valley at age 64.

Mrs. O'Dell-Freeman was born Nov. 22, 1939, in Porter, Okla. and worked as a medical assistant in Woodland for more than 20 years.

Survivors include Mrs. O'Dell-Freeman's husband, James Freeman of Davis, daughters Teresa Goode of Sacramento, Kelly Romero of Grass Valley and Christie O'Dell of Fair Oaks. She is also survived by sons John O'Dell Jr. of Nevada City, Tony O'Dell of Rancho Cordova, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be directed to The American Cancer Society.

Services: Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. at Reichert Funeral Chapel, 7320 Auburn Blvd., Citrus Heights. Interment will be at Sylvan District Cemetery in Citrus Heights. Reichert's Funeral Services of Citrus Heights is assisting the family with arrangements.

O'DONNELL

Father Cornelius O'Donnell

Father Cornelius O'Donnell died Friday, April 26, 2002 in Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland. He was 71, having been born April 6, 1931, in Ennis.

A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, at Holy Rosary Church.

O'Donnell was pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Woodland from October 1982 to October 1994.

Most Rev. John Scanlan ordained him for the Diocese of Sacramento on June 12, 1955, at All Hallows College in Dublin, Ireland. O'Donnell attended the All Hallows College Seminary.

His other assignments in the diocese included assistant pastor, All Hallows in Sacramento, Oct. 1956-Sept. 1962; pastor, Our Lady of the Snows in Westwood, Sept. 1968-Dec. 1973; pastor Our Lady of Lourdes in Sacramento, Dec. 1973-Oct. 1982; and pastor, St. John's in Dunsmuir and St. Joseph's in McCloud, Nov. 1994-Sept. 1999.

Father O'Donnell retired from active ministry in September 1999 and was appointed Pastor Emeritus of St. John/St. Joseph, Dunsmuir/McCloud. After retirement, he served as Parochial Administrator of St. Anthony Parish, Walnut Grove, before moving to Ireland last year.

O'Donnell is survived by a brother, Simon, and sister-in-law, brother Hugh, and sister-in-law, all of Ireland, and brother Colm, living in Canada.

A funeral mass was held Monday, April 29, at the Cathedral in Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland.

A memorial mass will be held at 6 p.m. today at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Dunsmuir.

O'DONNELL

Hugh O'Donnell

His wife and children were by his side when Hugh O'Donnell of Dixon died at his home on June 25, 2000, following a long illness. He was 83.

He was born on June 24, 1919, in Kansas City, Mo., to Michael and Lina O'Donnell. He served in World War II as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Camp San Luis Obispo.

He eventually settled in San Luis Obispo, married Esther De La Rosa and raised two children, Marina and Terence. He graduated from McGeorge Law School in 1972, and then established a law practice in Winters. He was also a public defender for Yolo County Superior Court.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Peggy, and his wife Esther. He married Mary McIlhone O'Donnell in July 1990, and they lived in Dixon. In 1990, he continued his practice in Woodland; he continued to be a public defender there until his retirement in 1997.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of El Macero Country Club. He was also a founding member of the San Luis Obispo Country Club. He was past president of Rotary International in Winters, and also enjoyed traveling throughout the world.

He is survived by his wife, Marie; daughter, Marina and her husband Joe Cook of Aptos; son, Terence and his wife Terri of Fresno; grandchildren, Noe Cook of Aptos and Erin and Carlos O'Donnell of Fresno; and stepchildren, Patricia Sanders of Novato, Lynn McGrath of Ashland, Ore., and Vincent McGrath of Pittsford, N.Y.

He is also survived by eight step-grandchildren and his sister, Nancy Murphy of Washington.

A celebration of his life will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dixon Community Church, 955 E. A St., Dixon.

The family would like to express gratitude to the staff of Yolo Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617.

OGASAWARA

Frank X. Ogasawara

Frank X. Ogasawara, UC Davis professor emeritus of avian and animal sciences, died on June 8, 2002, in Davis. He was 88.

He was born in San Diego on Nov. 10, 1913, and his secondary schooling was in Battle Mountain, Nev. He graduated from Lander County High School in June 1939.

He received a bachelor of science degree in 1949 and his doctor of philosophy in 1957 at UC Davis. He was appointed assistant professor at UC Davis in 1957 and subsequently advanced to associate and then to full professor.

He was senior author or co-author of 83 publications, served as major professor for four Ph.D. recipients and nine master's of science recipients, sponsored many F.A.O. fellows, and was an outstanding undergraduate adviser for more than 500 students.

He shared his expertise with counterparts in foreign nations through various overseas assignments: Nagoya University, Japan (1966, 1967, 1970); Edinburgh University, Scotland (1970, 1971, 1977); southern Brazil (1980); and Guangzho, China (1988).

He served as chairman of a U.S. Department of Agriculture-sponsored national turkey research study committee (1978, 1979) and as general chairman of the 71st Poultry Science Association's annual meeting, which took place in Davis in 1982.

He was awarded the National Turkey Federation's Outstanding Research Award in 1966 for pioneering studies in avian artificial insemination and the Poultry Science Association's Ralston Purina Outstanding Teacher Award in 1976.

In 1982, he was one of five distinguished North American poultry scientists who were granted the highest honor of Fellow of the Poultry Science Association for his outstanding research and teaching contributions for the previous 25 years to the American and international poultry industries.

He was made an honorary member of the Japan Zootechnical Society in 1991.

He was a selfless volunteer in both his professional and personal life. Many campus and community organizations owe their current vigor to his efforts.

These groups include, but are not limited to, the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi, the Davis chapter of AARP and the Catholic Community at the Davis Newman Center.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kay Ogasawara; two daughters, Pam Ogasawara and her husband Mike Corson of Urbana, Md., and Patty Sunui; son, Paul Ogasawara and his wife Christie Guth of Sebastopol; and five grandchildren, Mark and Katie Sunui and Greg, Tommy and Hannah Ogasawara.

Recitation of the Rosary and visitation will begin at 7:15 p.m. Friday at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland.

A funeral mass will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church, 200 W. 14th St., Davis. A potluck reception will follow, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Kratzer, Ogasawara, Vohra Scholarship Fund. Checks made payable to UC Regents may be sent to the Animal Science Department, One Shields Ave., UC Davis, Davis, CA 95616.

OGILVIE

Melvina “Mel” Ogilvie

Melvina “Mel” Ogilvie died March 28, 2006, at Woodland Memorial Hospital. A Yolo County resident for the past 51 years, she was 83.

Friends are invited to a celebration of her life from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Willow Oak Community Center, 17535 County Road 97 in Woodland.

Born June 19, 1922, to H. Clifford and Minnie (Cartmill) Holden in McAllister, Okla., she attended area schools through high school. She moved to Woodland in 1955, and was employed by the Woodland Joint Unified School District for more than 30 years until her retirement. She previously owned and operated Smitty's Drive-In of Woodland.

She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Jimmy Cano.

She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Roberts and her husband Jimmy, and Nancy Younger; a son, Billy Ritchie and his wife Sheila; grandchildren Sherri Roberts, Paula Schimada, Netty Ehrke, Jamie Younger and Will Ritchie; and great-granddaughter Sydni Schimada, all of Woodland.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in her name to the Elderly Nutrition Program of Yolo County, which provides Meals on Wheels.

Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

OGRAM

Scott F. Ogram

Scott F. Ogram died in his Meridian home Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at age 65.

Born Oct. 25, 1938, in Santa Barbara, Mr. Ogram retired from Halliburton Services after working for 34 years in the oil industry. He worked for Century 21 Select in Yuba City as real estate agent. He was a member of Toastmasters in Yuba City and PIRU Petroleum Club.

Survivors include her wife of 25 years, Shelah Ogram of Meridian; daughters, Brenda Ogram of Redding, Mary Ann Powell of Palmdale and Donna Jo Williams of Oklahoma; sons, David Ogram of Redding, and Dan Ogram of Anderson; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brothers, Brian Ogram of Texas and Robin Ogram of New Mexico.

The family requests memorials be directed to American Heart Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Holycross of Yuba City.

Services: A memorial service is scheduled at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at First United Methodist Church, Yuba City.

OJIMA

Masakazu Ojima

Masakazu Ojima died at his Woodland residence Nov. 28, 1999 at the age of 77. He was born in Stockton on Jan. 1, 1922, to the late Toyoki and Ushio Ojima.

Ojima was a resident of Yolo County for 61 years. He was a lifetime farmer in the area and retired in 1987.

He is survived by his three children, Mitchel Ojima of Woodland, Dennis Ojima of Fort Collins, Colo., and Marlene Johnson of Woodland; and his six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mizuye Ojima, who died Jan. 19, 1994.

Church services will be held at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento Hongwangi Betsuin, 2401 Riverside Blvd. in Sacramento, at 2 p.m. Friday. A burial service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Monument Hill Memorial Park in Woodland.

McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.
