HARTMAN

Nina Alice Hartman

Born July 28, 1912, in Kalamazoo, Mich., she graduated from Western Michigan University and begin her teaching career in Paw Paw, Mich.

She married William Hartman and moved to Santa Ana during World War II.

She taught school there and in Riverside, and especially enjoyed teaching third grade.

She received her master's degree in education from the University of Redlands.

In 1978, she retired from teaching. Then, in 1979, moved to Davis.

She lived here and in Woodland for the next 24 years.

She loved to travel and made trips to Germany, Italy, Japan and Egypt.

She was a member of St. John's Church in Woodland and the Leisure Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hartman.

She is survived by sons William James Hartman and his wife Linda Hartman, James Keith Hartman and his wife Penny Hartman of Denver, and grandchildren Lindsay and Andrew Hartman of Davis, Michael Hartman of Chicago and Jamie Reims of Denver.

A private memorial service is planned.

Memorials may be sent to the charity of the donor's choice.

McNary's Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

HARTSOCK

George Hartsock

George Hartsock died icon 3 Jan. 1900 at the home of a sister Mrs. Laura Elder, Woodland, Calif; was born icon 21 Sep. 1841 in Whitley Co. Ind., son of Isaac Hartsock of Troy Tp. [Whitley Co. Ind.].

He served in the Civil War with the 17th Ind. inf. and the 5th Ind. Batt.

He enlisted in 1861.

In 1871 he married Rosella Powell of Woodland and had these children: Ollie, Edna, Roy and Vernon.

He left brothers, Herman [of Santa Clara Calif.] and Samuel, [of Kosciusko Ind.] also the sister, Mrs. Elder.

HARTWIG

Robert Lee Hartwig

Robert L. Hartwig died at his home in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, Dec. 3 at age 58.

Mr. Hartwig was born July 23, 1947 in Woodland to Kurt O. and Ruth E. (Singleton) Hartwig.

He had been a Yolo County resident for 22 years and a 1965 graduate of Woodland High School.

After high school he attended CSU Chico, earning a bachelor's degree in mass communications and then graduated San Diego State University in 1973 with a master's degree in radio-television.

He went to work as an instructor/producer/director at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, where he worked in the Cuesta Broadcast Communications Program.

He took a sabbatical in the early 1990s and earned a second master's degree in history from CSU Chico in 1992, graduating with honors.

He returned to his professorial position at Cuesta College to become the division chair of Languages and Communications.

Survivors include Mr. Hartwig's father, Kurt O. Hartwig of Woodland; his sister, Jane H. Struble and her husband Eric of Newcastle; his brother, William Hartwig and his wife Vicki of Woodland; his nieces, Stephanie Campos of Woodland, Jennifer Tafoya of Menlo Park and Lana Struble of Newcastle; and his nephew, Dietrich Struble of Newcastle.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Eva Hartwig.

The family requests memorials in Mr. Hartwig's name be directed to the Cuesta College Foundation Trust for the Robert Hartwig Memorial Broadcast Scholarship Fund, c/o Bill Hartwig, 1221 Harley Drive, Woodland, 95695.

Services: A graveside funeral service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14 at Monument Hill Memorial Park, 35036 County Road 22, Woodland. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.

HARVEY

Patricia Lynn Harvey

Patricia Lynn Harvey died at Woodland Memorial Hospital on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at age 55.

Born Sept. 10, 1948, in Havre, Mont., Mrs. Harvey moved to Knights Landing in 1990. She was a graduate of Grand Junction High School class of 1966. She attended Mesa Junior College and the University of Utah and worked as a bookkeeper in Salt Lake City. She was an active member of the Woodland Christian Center Church and involved with youth activities teaching crafts and youth camps.

Survivors include her father, Grant J. Harvey Jr. and stepmother, Patricia Harvey of Salt Lake City, Utah; sisters, Denise Turner of Saginaw, Mich. and Donna Moyer of Eureka, Nev.; nieces, Cheryl Dirck of Norman, Okla., Kirsten Schroeder of Fernley, Nev., and Kimberly Todd of Eureka, Nev.; two grand-nieces; and three grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Arlene Ruth Harvey, in 1983; and brother, Joseph William Harvey, in 1984.

The family requests memorials be directed to the youth group of the Woodland Christian Center Church in her behalf. Arrangements are under the direction of Evergreen Funeral Services of Woodland.

Services: A memorial service is scheduled at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at Woodland Christian Center, 441 California St., Woodland.

HARVEY

Shelby Jean Bontye Harvey

Shelby Jean Bontye Harvey was born December 24, 1937, in Reading, Pennsylvania the only child of the late Nellie Beatrice Byrem Bontye Stimac of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Joseph Bontye of foreign birth in Transylvania, now part of Romania.

Jean, as she was known on this Pacific coast, died peacefully in the Medical Intensive Care Unit of David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base, September 10, 2003.

Her death was the result of a long illness with a rare and terminal disease called Primary Myelofibrosis, which was complicated by breast cancer in 1999 and eventual liver and kidney failure.

Jean was a Girl Scout troop leader in Winters for over twelve years, a member of the Tierra Del Oro Girl Scout Council Training Staff for more than twenty years, and a member of the Girl Scouts of America for nearly fifty five years.

She was also the editor of the Girl Scout Newsletter "The Scout About."

Selected as Winters Citizen of the year in 1982, Jean was always active in school matters, community projects, AFS, and the library support groups.

She established and directed two Cultural Arts Festivals, two Music appreciation Summer Schools, countless community soup kitchens and garage sales and was a primary builder/supporter of the Winters City Park Project on the corner of Fourth and Main Streets.

The city of Winters was able to have a highly comprehensive and complete resource guide and annual community calendar because she was instrumental in assembling and publishing it for two years before the Chamber of Commerce adopted the service.

Jean will also be remembered for her portrayal of Auntie Em in the Winters Theater production of "The Wizard of Oz" and as a nun in "The Sound of Music".

Jean was also a widely read columnist in the Winters Express writing the "Meet Your Teachers" column.

Jean was a leader in the Davis International Bible Study Fellowship for seven years, an ordained deacon in the Pioneer Presbyterian Church of Winters, and a Founding member and member of the board of trustees at the Winters Church of Christ.

Before moving to Winters, she was active in the Protestant Women of the Chapel.

She was highly appreciated for her role as the caregiver for several families with elderly adult shut-ins as well as her own mother and in-laws while they lived in her home in Winters.

She is survived by her husband, David C. Harvey of Winters, and their four children; David C. Harvey Jr. and his wife Irene, of Shingle Springs, Vicki Harvey Rasul Catterson and her husband Thomas, of Yuba City, Donna Harvey Carey and her husband Jon, of Spanish Fork, Utah, and Mark H. Harvey and his wife Ana, of Winters.

She is also the proud grandmother of Bonnie L. Walsh of Citrus Heights, Ryan D. Harvey of Shingle Springs, Vanessa C. Rasul, Matthew A. Rasul, and Talon E. Catterson of Yuba City, Rachael B., Jacob N., and J. McKaela Carey of Spanish Fork and Stephan C. Hudson and Derek D. Harvey of Winters.

She is also the great grandmother of Alyssa I. Hahn and Dylan H. Blalock of Citrus Heights.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Pioneer Presbyterian Church.

Her remains were donated to the University of California at Davis Medical Teaching Facility.

In lieu of flowers or other gratuities, her request is for friends to donate to the American Cancer Society or the Yolo County Hospice Care Center in her behalf.

HASS

Ellery P. Hass

Ellery P. Hass died Feb. 23, 2001, at Kaiser Hospital. Born Nov. 11, 1921, in Harris, Iowa, he was 79.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a custodian at Harris School until 1959, when he moved to Davis. He worked for the Davis Joint Unified School District as a custodian until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Hass of Davis; his children, Kathy Machen of Davis, and Doyle Hass and his wife Brenda of Woodland; his grandchildren, Vickie Hawes and Hermann Jared of Davis, Chris and Tonya Machen of Giebelstadt, Germany, Jeff and Anna Hass of Arbuckle, and Kevin and Judy Hass of Chico; and great-grandchildren, Joey Hawes, Robbie and Ty Machen, Danny and Diana Hass and Blaine Hass.

He is also survived by one brother, Dale Hass of Lake Park, Iowa, and two sisters, Verna Schwarting of Cherokee Village, Ark., and Darleen Griffith of Albert Lea, Minn.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Hass of Davis.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. There will be no graveside services.

HAUSSLER

Kenneth S. Haussler

Longtime Davis resident Kenneth S. Haussler died June 25, 2000, in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. He was 78.

He was born on March 15, 1922, in the house that still stands at 2002 Renoir Ave. in Davis. He farmed the family's Davis ranch with his brother, Bob Haussler, until 1978.

Haussler's passion for the community was demonstrated by a plethora of civic duties, including serving as president of the Davis Joint Unified School District Board of Education; president of the Yolo County School Boards Association; and president of the California School Boards Association, where he was re-elected for an unprecedented second term.

He joined the Davis Masonic Lodge in 1946 and served as master in 1948, 1989 and 1990; and was a member of the Scottish Rite Temple, Ben Ali Shrine, Order of the Eastern and Mariners Club at Davis Community Church.

Haussler also was a 4-H Diamond All-Star and a 4-H leader for 25 years, and a member of the Davis Community Band and Cal Aggie Marching Band. He organized and was dad adviser for the Davis chapter of DeMolay.

In business, he was president of the Plainfield Farm Bureau, president of the Davis Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Hi-Twelve board of directors, a member of the board of directors for the Bank of Davis and First Northern Bank of Dixon, and a member of the Cal Aggie Flying Farmers.

He helped organize the East Davis Fire Department and served as assistant chief.

He was a member of the Cache Creek Advisory Committee, president of the California Association of Resource Conservation Districts, president of the Yolo County Family Service Agency and president of Haussler Oil Petroleum Service.

Haussler is survived by his wife, Lucille of Lake Havasu City; his brother, Bob Haussler of Davis; his former wife, Marie Haussler McKeown of Santa Barbara; his daughter, Kaye Wellman of Livermore; his son, Gustav A. Haussler III of Kent, Wash.; six grandchildren, Kevin Wellman, Carolyn Wellman, Gustav A. Haussler IV, Chad Haussler, Lianna Haussler and Christa Haussler; and one great-grandchild, Gustav A. Haussler V.

He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth R. Haussler.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 16, at 11 a.m. at the Masonic Auditorium, 1655 Da Vinci Court in Davis. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shriners Hospital in Sacramento.
