STOUT

Mabel Stout

Mabel Stout, longtime Davis resident, died after a short hospitalization for complications of congestive heart failure on Jan. 25, 2000, in Concord. She was 91.

Born Mabel Goldstein on March 21, 1908, in San Francisco, to Agnes Blanch King Goldstein and Walter Goldstein, she lived with her family in Oakland until 1915 due to the housing shortage created by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Shortly after her return to San Francisco that year, Mabel was selected as one of "Terman's Termites," a group of gifted children studied by psychologist Lewis Madison Terman and others for decades and initially used to create the Stanford-Binet IQ test in 1916.

Walter Goldstein moved his family moved to Orland in 1920 and opened a Ford dealership with his brother after losing his tool and die maker job at Ford Motor Co. during a wave of corporate anti-Semitism.

Mabel graduated from Orland High School and attended Chico State Teachers College (now Cal State Chico). She transferred to the UC Berkeley and graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1929.

While attending college she met Perry Robert Stout, a native of Hughson and later a professor of soil science and plant nutrition at UC Berkeley and UC Davis. They married Nov. 24, 1929, and remained together almost 46 years until his death in 1975.

The couple had four children, Robert Walter Stout of Santa Rosa, Norman David Stout of Walnut Creek, Carol Carroll of Fresno and Marilyn Stout Milhous of Fort Collins, Colo.

The couple lived in Oakland while Perry Stout pursued his doctorate in soils science at UC Berkeley, where he worked as an analytical chemist for both the university and the Food and Drug Administration to support their family.

Mabel's lifelong commitment to public service began during the Depression when she helped organize the Berkeley Food Co-op in 1938, where she was member No. 187.

She was a Cub Scout den mother for her sons, and a Brownie troop leader for her daughters. She also served as PTA president at Washington Elementary and Woodrow Wilson Junior High in Oakland.

In 1942 Mabel and her family moved to Cambridge, Mass., and later to Washington, D.C., while Perry Stout (now a professor at UC Berkeley) led the Bat Radar Guided Missile Project and eventually served as the director of guided missile research for the U.S. Navy.

Mabel spent many months raising her family alone while Perry Stout conducted successful field tests of the Bat against Japanese shipping in the Philippines.

Mabel transferred her West Coast activism to the East, where she convinced the Cambridge, Mass., school district to open their playgrounds after school hours for the benefit of schoolchildren.

The family returned to California in 1945, and Mabel resumed her leadership roles in the Girl Scouts. She was a leader trainer for the Oakland Girl Scout Council and led the first racially integrated Brownie troop in Oakland during the 1950s.

Mabel moved to Davis in 1959 with her husband and daughter when the department of soils science and plant nutrition (now part of the department of land, air, and water resources) relocated to Davis from Berkeley.

In Davis, she served as president of the Tri-County Girl Scout Council, was an officer in the local chapter of the League of Women Voters, and became a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church along with her husband.

She was an extremely active member of the Unitarian church, often serving as chair of the church's board of directors and leader of the Women's Auxiliary. She often represented her congregation at Unitarian Universalist conferences.

Mabel was especially active in fund-raising. She led the successful library building campaign at the Unitarian Church and later endowed the Philosopher's Corner patio in honor of her husband as well as geneticist Max Kleiber, a longtime family friend and colleague.

Mabel was well traveled. She accompanied Perry Stout on his three yearlong sabbaticals to Adelaide, Australia; Alexandria, Egypt; and Oak Ridge, Tenn. She circled the globe by ship in 1955 on her way home from Adelaide, toured the Far East, traveled to the Soviet Union in the 1970s, and visited Africa twice.

One of her African trips was to see her daughter and granddaughter in Ghana in 1967, where her son-in-law was working for the Agency for International Development; the second was to experience safari in Kenya in the 1980s.

She had a great interest in Native American art and culture, and enjoyed touring the American Southwest in her later years, often with the Davis Arboretum Society.

Mabel was also active in Democratic Party politics, and gave generously to Democratic candidates. She often attended the Yolo County Democratic Central Committee's annual crab and bean feeds.

In addition to her four children, she is survived by two sisters-in-law, Kay King and Ella Mae Pilcher; a brother-in-law, Harold Stout; nine grandchildren, Kristin Milio, Mark Stout, Perry Stout, Adrienne Cherry, Allison King, Jeannie Epperly, Heather Miles, Sasha Milhous and Maya Milhous; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Church of Davis.

Donations in Mabel's name may be made to Native American education institutions and environmental protection and preservation organizations.
