In 1958 he graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in industrial engineering. His 38-year executive career with Spreckels took the family from Salinas to Manteca, Mendota, Woodland and San Francisco. In 1974 Mr. Quinlan was appointed plant manager at Woodland's Spreckels plant, where he remained employed until his retirement in 1992.

Active in the Woodland community for more than 38 years, his service included leadership in the chamber of commerce, having served as president in 1979 and director for many years. Over the years he received several awards including: Distinguished Member Service Award, 1974; Member of the Year, 1976; Agri-Business Person of the Year 1989; and Western Fairs Association Blue Ribbon Award in Recognition and Appreciation of Dedicated Support of Yolo County Fair. His service to Yolo County included: Yolo-Solano Air Pollution District Formation Committee; foreman of the 1987-88 Yolo County grand jury; Yolo County Historical Society; and Yolo County Fair Committee.

Fulfilling a childhood dream, Mr. Quinlan served as a volunteer firefighter with Springlake Fire Department, having held the rank of Captain and having served as president. He volunteered at Woodland Opera House and was instrumental in raising funds for its renovation. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, while being active as a lector and participating in many fund raising efforts including Holy Rosary school board and the local Knight of Columbus.

Following his retirement in 1992, he and his wife enjoyed travel in their motor home, while spending winters in Arizona. He was recently honored by the museum board and its volunteers for his contributions. May 3, 2002, the Quinlans celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, with family and friends, at R.H. Phillips Winery.

According to his family, "Mr. Quinlan was known to his friends as someone they could count on any time.
