Friends are invited to a service at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road, followed by an 11 a.m. gathering at University Retirement Community to remember both Jane and Horton Laude.

Born Mary Jane Gale July 1, 1916, in Ivor, Va., she was the fourth of seven children of Dr. John Samuel Gale Jr. and Frances Cofer Rogers Gale. She was a 1938 graduate of Florida State College for Women, where she majored in education, but also cultivated her artistic talent. She returned to Virginia where she taught high school for several years.

She met her future husband while teaching languages to Army Signal Corps officers in Arlington, Va., and they married in Ivor on Feb. 2, 1946, just before moving to Davis where he joined the UC Davis faculty in agronomy.

Her family says that while she very much loved her life and friends in Davis, she never gave up her Virginia identity or accent. She always maintained close ties to her family and delighted in being a Western exponent of Southern grace and hospitality.

She began painting again in the 1970s, and her art remained a primary focus in her life for three decades. She became well known locally for her portrait work and especially enjoyed her relationships with the families whose children she painted.

She is survived by her daughter Jennifer of Davis and her son Richard of Palo Alto; her brother, Dr. James C. Gale of Roanoke, Va.; and her sisters, Frances Dalton of Belton, Texas, and Cordelia Burrow of South Lyon, Mich.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Yolo Hospice and the Davis Art Center for the student scholarship fund. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
