DEMING

Marjorie Ruth Deming

Marjorie Ruth Deming died in Esparto, Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005 at age 86.

Mrs. Deming was born June 28, 1919 in Solano County. She had been a Yolo County resident for 10 years. She attended Armijo High School. She, along with her former husband "Bud" Freitas, owned and operated the Fairfield Meat Market. Later she was a personal secretary for former Solano County sheriffs, Thomas "Tommy" Joyce and Alan "Al" Cardoza. After retiring, she became a court reporter for 20 years, serving municipal and superior courts in Solano County and other jurisdictions. Upon retiring from this position, she and her husband, George, owned and operated the Pioneer Fruit Stand in Suisun Valley for five years. She belonged to the following clubs and organizations: Democrat State Central Committee, Fairfield-Suisun Wednesday Club president, Solano County board member of the American TB Association, Solano County board member of the American Cancer Society, board member of Fairfield Park and Recreation District, member of Rebekah Lodge and Fairfield's Holy Spirit Catholic Church. In 1961 she ran for and lost the primary election for the California State Assembly. She served on state Democrat party positions and was a delegate at the 1956 and 1960 Democrat Party conventions.

Survivors include Mrs. Deming's daughter, Muriel Darleen Freitas of Butte, N.D.; her son, John E. Freitas and his wife Jacqueline A. Segersten of Carmichael; stepdaughter, Patty Sparks of Las Vegas; her grandchildren, John E. Freitas III of Los Angeles, Anne E. Freitas of Sacramento, Kathrin Volochenko of Kief, N.D., Linda W. Bushey of American Canyon, Mathew E. Scally of Woodland; her step-granddaughter, Jennifer Freeworth of Sacramento; her great-grandchildren, Clay and Jacob Bushey and Julie Volson. She was preceded in death by her husband George Deming.

The family requests memorials in Mrs. Deming's name be directed to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, 95617.

Services: A private memorial service is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Country Villa Mobile Home Park Club House in Esparto. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.

DENBAUGH

Robert Paul Denbaugh

Robert Paul Denbaugh died April 23, 2005, at Woodland Memorial Hospital. He was 45.

Born Sept. 29, 1959, in Santa Monica to Robert and Diane (Green) Denbaugh, he attended area schools until the family moved to South lake Tahoe, where he attended South Lake Tahoe High School.

He was employed as a carpenter in the construction industry for 11 years. A Yolo County resident for the past four years, he belonged to the Yolo Sportsman's Association and was a member of Ducks Unlimited.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Denbaugh; his uncle, Richard Green; and his grandparents, Frances and Paul Green.

He is survived by a daughter, Tina Denbaugh, and his mother, Diane Leight, both of Woodland; a sister, Lisa Denbaugh of San Diego; and a brother, David Denbaugh of Los Angeles.

He is further survived by his uncles, James Denbaugh of Camarillo and Tom Green of Orem, Utah; his aunts, Paula Spencer of Saugus, Sharon Green of Westchester and Margaret Green of Orem, Utah; and niece, Juliete Denbaugh, and nephew, Westley Denbaugh, both of Los Angeles.

Private family services with interment to follow will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in his memory be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital.

Evergreen Funeral Service is Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

DENNETT

Robert K. Dennett

Robert K. Dennett died on Dec. 3, 1999, in Napa. Born on Oct. 18, 1921, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Kingsley and Mabel Dennett, he was 78.

In his early years he developed his twin passions for plants and swimming, which stayed with him for a lifetime.

He attended Punahou School in Hawaii, where he became an Olympic-caliber swimmer and began formal studies in plant science.

He graduated from Cornell University, completed graduate work at the University of Hawaii and earned a doctorate degree in plant genetics at Pennsylvania State University in 1954.

He was married for 46 years to Joan Mauser Hohl, who died in 1993.

He was a World War II veteran who was stationed in Hawaii and Guam. While in Guam, he was part of an experimental program that grew fresh vegetables to supplement the C-ration diet of the forward fighting forces.

His career in agriculture began as a flower breeder in Lompoc in 1954. He switched to cucumber and tomato breeding, working for such well-known companies such as Hunt's, Peto Seeds and Goldsmith Seeds.

It was during this time that he established a reputation as one of the first plant breeders to create hybrid tomatoes for the tomato processing industry.

He finished his career as a cotton breeder for his own company, Seeds of Tomorrow, which sold seeds in California, Arizona, India and Central America.

He is survived by three daughters and their families, Kathy Dennett of Napa, Ann Slavin of Davis and Susan Strathairn of Encinitas; three sons and their families, Charles Dennett of Woodland, Scott Dennett of Wasilla, Ala., and Alan Dennett of Napa; a brother, George Dennett of Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; numerous friends; and his beloved dogs.

A graveside gathering will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Davis Cemetery.

DENNIE

Richard L. Dennie

Richard L. Dennie, Ph.D., died on July 18, 2001, at a care facility in Woodland.

Born on July 7, 1921, in Spokane, Wash., he was 80 years old. He graduated from Fairfield High School and Eastern Washington State College. He received his master's and doctorate in psychology from the University of Nebraska.

He farmed in eastern Washington for 25 years and had a private practice in counseling in Spokane for more than 10 years. He was also director of counseling services at Lutheran Social Services and served on the sanity commission board at Eastern Washington State Hospital before he retired in 1993. He lived in Woodland for the last three years of his life.

He was active in community affairs, Toastmasters' International and the Inland Empire Appaloosa Club. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Fairfield and in Spokane. He loved sports (especially baseball and the Baltimore Orioles and Nebraska football), wildlife, physical fitness, reading and American political history.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Claudia; three daughters, Lynn of Honolulu, Jan and her husband Daniel Gordon of San Luis Obispo, and Gail and her husband James Huttlinger of Sacramento; and two sons, Bruce and his wife Angie Dennie of Woodland, and Douglas and his wife Jane Yung Dennie of Bellevue, Wash.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Rick and Veronica Gordon of San Luis Obispo, and Emma and Faith Dennie of Woodland, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his older brother, Hal Dennie, of Spokane.

A memorial service will be in October in Spokane and private inurnment will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Rockford, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity or to one of the following charities: Zion Lutheran Church in Fairfield, WA 99012; Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 8304 East Buckeye, Spokane, WA 99212; or the American Parkinson Disease Association, 1250 Hylan Blvd., #4B, Staten Island, NY 10305-1946.

Arrangements are under the direction of McNary's Chapel of Woodland.

GIELOW

Fiorella I. Gielow

Fiorella I. Gielow died Nov. 27, 2000, at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento. Born May 25, 1928, in Montalto DiCastro, Italy, she was 72.

A 39-year resident of Davis, she worked for 30 years as staff research associate in the radio biology department at UC Davis. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Gielow, in 1984. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Ornella Thompson of Georgia.

She is survived by her son, Bill Gielow of Soquel, her daughter, Marisa Gielow of Woodland, her three brothers, Italo, Augusto and Tonio Passalacqua, all of Italy, her twin sister, Marisa Cottle of Davis, her grandson, Ryan Gielow of Pleasanton, her three nephews, Wendell, Glenn and Terence Cottle, as well as their wives and children.

Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church, 14th and B streets. Interment will be at Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road. Donations may be made in her memory to Sutter General Hospital, Oncology Department, 2800 L St., Sacramento, CA 95814.

GILBERT

Jerald Edward Gilbert

Jerald Edward Gilbert was born on June 19, 1960, in Woodland, Ca., to Harold and Shirley Gilbert.

He was raised in Knights Landing and attended Grafton Elementary School.

Jerry attended secondary school in Woodland and graduated from Woodland High School in 1978.

Upon graduation from high school, Jerry attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

He worked his way through college driving a student school bus, working on the family farm during the summers and working various positions in the Agri-business field.

Long-time friends and high school sweethearts, Jerry and Tami were married on September 12, 1981.

He completed his senior year at Cal Poly with the love and companionship from Tami.

In 1982, Jerry graduated with a bachelors of Science Degree in Crop Science with concentrations in Agri-Business and Plant Protection. They moved to Woodland, where he was employed by Contadina Foods as a field representative. In 1984, Jerry and Tami relocated to Fresno where he accepted the position of District Manager. While in Fresno, they started their family and became the proud parents of Jason, their first child who was born in June 1986. In December of 1989, they moved back to Woodland upon Jerry accepting a promotion of Manager of Field Operations with Contadina. In May, 1990 their family grew when their daughter Jenna was born.

In 1993 Jerry accepted a position with the Morning Star Packing Company, as the General Manager of the Williams processing facility.

He continued in this position until January 2003, when he accepted the position of Vice President of Business Development for the Rio Bravo Tomato Company, in Bakersfield, Ca. During his youth, Jerry spent a lot of time on the family farm with his dad, uncle and brothers. He enjoyed his Uncle Lloyd's jokes, even though he heard those same jokes many times. It was the way that Uncle Lloyd told them that made Jerry laugh. He liked to hunt pheasants and dove on the ranch. He was active in Little League and Babe Ruth and really liked to play summer softball with his good buddies from high school. Jerry enjoyed entertaining both family and friends in his home. While, cooking, he liked to listen to his favorite music very loudly with the windows wide open and the house rockin.' Jerry was an avid golfer and shared his passion for golf with his son Jason. He was a member of the Yolo Fliers Club. Tami and Jenna also learned how to golf so that they could spend time together as a family foursome.

Jerry truly loved his wife and sole mate of 22 years, Tami, and their two beautiful children, Jason and Jenna.

Jerry ended his life on June 26, 2003. Also surviving Jerry are his parents, Harold and Shirley Gilbert of Knights Landing; brothers, John Gilbert and wife Debbie of Woodland, and Jeff Gilbert and wife Dee Dee of Knights Landing; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Other survivors include his father- and mother-in-law, David and Louise Wallace of Woodland.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, at the United Methodist Church, 212 Second St., Woodland. Memorials may be directed to the Stevenson School, 3152 Forest Lake Road, Pebble Beach, Ca. 93953; or Shriners Children's Hospital.

McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
