BEAMES

Ranulf P. Beames

Dr. Ranulf P. Beames died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006 in Santa Rosa at age 80.

Dr. Beames was born Aug. 7, 1925 in Oakland. He was a 1943 graduate of University High School in Oakland. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he returned to the San Mateo County to study medicine at Stanford University where he graduated in 1952. He volunteered for the Stanford Alumni Associations, last serving as president of the Oakmont Stanford Alumni Association. Dr. Beames practiced urology in San Mateo County from 1955 until 1992. He played drums in the Doctor's Jazz Band. In 1974 he was president of the San Mateo County Medical Society. In that capacity, he created the physician's telephone exchange.

Survivors include Dr. Beames' daughter, Barbara Butterfield and her husband Jason of Woodland; his sons, David Beames and his wife Marilyn of San Mateo and Richard Beames and his wife Melissa of Hillsborough; and seven grandchildren.

The family requests memorials in Dr. Beames' name to be directed to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, Va. 22038-1131.

Services: Celebrations of Dr. Beames' life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Quail Inn, 7035 Oakmont Dr., Santa Rosa and at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 1 at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club, 701 Madera Dr., San Mateo. Lafferty and Smith in Santa Rosa is assisting the family with arrangements.

BEARD

Lee Harry Beard

Lee Harry Beard of Davis died Feb. 5, 2005. He was 86.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday at Rancho Yolo Clubhouse, 620 Pole Line Road.

Born Oct. 1, 1918, he was a life member of Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6949. He and his wife owned Davis Appliance for almost 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife Neomi in 1998, his son Jerome 1974 and daughter Yvonne.

He is survived by his sons, Tyronne Beard of Galt and Larry Beard of Clarksburg; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters and a brother.

BEASLEY

Oma V. Beasley

Oma V. Beasley, long time Winters resident, quietly passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005 at Sierra Health Care Convalescent Hospital in Davis. Born June 1, 1918 in Arkansas, she was 86 years old.

Mrs. Beasley became a Winters resident in the 1950s and retired from Basic Foods in Vacaville. She was an active member of the Winters Community and worked in several volunteer organizations. She also volunteered much of her time at the Senior Center in Woodland. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her son Billy Gaither and his wife Bonnie of Millville; brothers Floyd and Herman Gaither of Watsonville; sister Mabel Livingston of Yakima, Washington; four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son Pete Garrett in August 1974, and by three brothers and two sisters.

Friends were invited to attend a funeral service for Mrs. Beasley on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church in Winters. Interment in the Winters Cemetery will take place at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

BECK

E. D. 'Al' Beck

E.D. "Al" Beck died in Woodland Monday, July 1, 2002, at age 84.

Born July 7, 1917, in Ozark, Ark., Mr. Beck had been a Dixon resident for more than 60 years. He owned and operated a Chevron service station in Dixon for several years and later was employed by UC Davis for 13 years. According to his family, "he enjoyed his bountiful garden and his family was his life."

Mr. Beck is survived by his wife, Opal Beck of Dixon; daughter, Ladene Kindelt and husband David of Woodland; son, Larry Beck of Dixon; granddaughter, Kerry Clearwater and husband Mike of Dixon; grandsons, Kenny Meyer of Dixon and Barry Meyer of Kansas City, Mo.; and great-grandchildren, Meghan and Travis Clearwater and Derek and Josh Meyer, all of Dixon.

He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Travis Beck, in 1962.

A funeral service is scheduled at 2 p.m., Monday, July 8, at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home, 569 N. First St., Dixon, with Chaplain Gretchen Shilts officiating. Interment is scheduled to follow in Silveyville Cemetery, Dixon.

Milton Carpenter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

MARTIN

Carl "Papa" Thomas Martin

Carl "Papa" Thomas Martin passed away on Friday, Dec. 2, 2005 at his Woodland residence at the age of 71.

Mr. Martin was born Oct. 10, 1934 in Uniontown, Pa. to Stephen and Elizabeth (Bandy) Martin. He had been a Woodland resident for 53 years. He attended school in Uniontown and later graduated in 1952 from Southwestern High School in Detroit. He was employed by Mobil Chemical as a machine operator for a total of 30 years.

Survivors include Mr. Martin's wife of 54 years, Ruth Martin; his daughters, Shirley Kergel and her husband Bob and Candy Fogg and her companion Shane Edgington; his sons, Alex Martin and his wife Jackie, Michael Martin and his wife Debbie, and Terry Martin; all of Woodland; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Louise Hawkins of Georgia; his brother, Don Martin of Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Betty Roberts; and his brothers, Alex Martin, Billy Martin, Stevie Martin and Johnny Martin.

The family requests memorials in Mr. Smith's name be directed to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, 95617.

Services: A funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9 at Woodland Bible Church, 433 California St., Woodland, with Pastor Verl Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park, 35036 County Road 22, Woodland. Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

MARTIN

Enola Hays Martin

Enola Hays Martin died in Davis on Aug. 14, 2005, having just celebrated her 90th birthday.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Davis United Methodist Church, 1620 Anderson Road.

She was born on the Wyndotte Indian Reservation Aug. 11, 1915, in Ottawa County, Okla., near the village of Peoria. The sixth of seven children born to Enoch M. Hays and Agnes McCord Hays, her father was an attorney and school teacher. Her mother was a homemaker who taught all of her children to read, although she herself had finished only the eighth grade in school.

She graduated from high school in Lenapah, Okla., in May 1932. She continued her education at Coffeyville Junior College in Kansas, where she graduated in May 1934. She also took summer courses at Northeastern State Teachers College in Tahlequah, Okla.

Her first job was teaching eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse in Ruby, Okla. She lived with her future husband's aunt and uncle whose home was near the school.

She married Paul Revere Martin on Sept. 21, 1937, in Kansas and they settled in California. He learned the hardwood flooring trade. She and her husband's only child, Paula, was born in Los Angeles on Sept. 6, 1945.

After their child's birth and the end of the war, Paul started his own business as a hardwood flooring contractor, while she was a homemaker. In 1955, Paul was unable to work for several months due to an illness, later thought to be polio. She went to work as a temporary substitute teacher for Los Angeles Unified School District with the understanding that she would work toward her bachelor's degree. For the next 10 years until her graduation from Cal State Los Angeles in January of 1965, she worked as a teacher during the day and took college courses at night.

She taught fifth grade in Los Angeles for 17 years after she obtained her teaching credential. She also taught in Bartlesville, Okla., when Paul retired from the hardwood flooring business.

When daughter Paula married Clifford Hui and settled in San Diego, Enola and Paul returned to Hemet, Calif., where she was active in the Hemet United Methodist Church. She also continued to work as a substitute teacher for Riverside County and the city of San Jacinto until she was 74. Her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1978 and died five years later.

She moved to Davis in 1994 to be closer to her family. She became active in United Methodist Women and weekly Bible study at Davis United Methodist Church. She moved to Sierra Health Care in July 2001 after she was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis.

She is survived by her daughter Paula Martin Hui, her son-in-law Clifford Hui and her grandchildren Alexandra and Brian Hui, all of Davis; and many dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make donations in her memory to the Bell Choir Fund at Davis United Methodist Church (Checks payable to Davis United Methodist Church.)

MARTIN

Fred R. Martin

Fred R. Martin passed away on Feb. 21, 2005, in Davis. Born on Feb. 25, 1926, in Winters, he was 78 years old.

Mr. Martin worked as a farmer and was a lifelong resident of Winters.

He is survived by his daughter Wendy Lopez and her husband, Joe, of Yuba City; sons Steve Martin and his wife, Loretta, of Winters, and John Martin and his wife, Cindy, of Vacaville; grandchildren Jeremy, Brian, Chris, Sarah and Adam, and great-grandchildren Masen, Connar, Sloan and Holden. He is also survived by his brothers, Joe Martin, of Sacramento, Tony Martin, of Winters and John Martin, of Winters, and his sister, Ann Shuler, of Rio Vista.

His parents, John and Isabel Martin, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Feb. 28, 2005 from 5-7 p.m. at McCune Garden Chapel, in Vacaville.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at 10 a.m. at the Winters Cemetery. Pastor Frank Salamone will preside.

Donations may be made in Mr. Martin’s name to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, 4351 Garden City Drive, Landover, Maryland, 20785.
