He reluctantly succumbed to leukemia with wife of more than 61 years, Kathleen Boosembark, at his side.

Boosembark was a man who loved life. Born on Oct. 6, 1921, in Battle Creek, Mich., he was raised in Bowling Green, Ohio. He was a very athletic young man, lettering in both football and baseball in high school.

At 18, his love of baseball drew him to Babe Ruth's Baseball School in Florida. He trained under the "Babe" and tried out for the major leagues. However his life's path lay elsewhere, and he joined the Army Air Corps.

He was a navigator for the 449th Bomber Group during World War II, flying 25 combat missions in Europe. When the war ended he returned to Bowling Green State University and earned his bachelor's degree in accounting. He later received his master's degree in industrial management from the Institute of Technology at Wright Patterson.

Civilian life didn't appeal to Boosembark, and he re-enlisted in the newly formed U.S. Air Force. While serving in the Korean War he flew many humanitarian missions. His military career spanned 30 memorable years and he retired as a full colonel from Clark Field in the Philippines, where he had been the chief of procurement for the 13th Air Force.

He and his wife, Kitty, moved to Davis in 1972 and began his second life's career. Frank went into business with his sons and son-in-law, opening Bernard's Tire and Alignment in 1973 and Valley Hi Landscaping in 1981. He was the bookkeeper and accountant for his boys. He worked every day right up to and including the day he went into the hospital for chemotherapy in December 2004.

"Frank was a man who lived a wonderful life, " his family says. "He married his best friend's sister, traveled the world with his family, was a successful businessman and an extraordinary patriot. He was happiest when surrounded by family and dear friends. We will all miss him."

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Madison Boosembark and Nettie Boosembark; sister, Gayle Roper; and daughter-in-law, Lainda Boosembark.

A celebration of his life will begin 10 a.m. Saturday at his home, 4306 Almond Lane in Davis. He loved his yard, where he trimmed and watered by the hour; there, family and friends will gather for a short service, lunch, Big Band sounds and memories.

Everyone is encouraged to dress in his favorite attire - very bright Hawaiian shirts.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners' Children's Hospital, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817. (Frank Boosembark's name and address should be included with the donation.)
