COLLINS

Allen Darrell (Bud) Collins

Allen Darrell (Bud) Collins died at home in Woodland, on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003 at the age of 90.

Born in King City, Ca., on March 18, 1913, Mr. Collins moved to Woodland in 1928, and graduated from Woodland High School in 1931. During his senior year, Bud and his brother Phil rented a room from the parents of T.L. Whitehead. He began working for H.B. Lamoree's Meat Market, Woodland French Laundry, and California AAA. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 through 1946, attaining a rank of Captain, during World War II. After discharge from Mather Air Field, Sacramento he worked in Woodland for Armstrong's in agricultural fertilizers sales. T.L. Whitehead, then principal of Dingle Elementary School, fixed up a blind date with one of his teachers, Kathryn Frances Burke. He married Kathryn Burke in 1947. In 1951 he was hired by George Story and his brother Phil to manage the crew at Collins and Story Warehouse Co. in Robbins, Ca. (Sutter Basin). While recuperating from a terrible fall in Robbins, Bud was presented the opportunity by brother, Phil to start C.B.C. Warehouse Co., on the corner of Kentucky and Road 101 (Pioneer St.), Woodland and Richards Blvd., Sacramento, in partnership with Ken Brown. This grain storage company operated from 1957 until 1984. Bud retired as manager in 1978. Bud was a member of the Elks Club, and former member and past president of the Carlton Club. An avid sportsman throughout his life, he was a member of the Woodland Duck Club for many years.

Bud was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years in 1991, his sister, Doris, and brother, Phil, and nephew Robert Allen Collins. Survivors are daughter, Mary Schreckenghost and husband Terry of Anchorage, Alaska, and son Burke of Woodland, grandsons Timothy Burke and David Allen Collins, Matthew and Kati Schreckenghost of Anchorage, Alaska, sister-in-laws, Jeri Kelly and Alice Burke Francis, and numerous nieces and nephews.

COLLINS

Sue Collins

After a brief and courageous battle with brain cancer, Sue Collins died peacefully at home in the presence of her husband and three daughters on April 3, 2005.

Born Jan. 29, 1951, in Sacramento to Phyllis and Wesley Earl, she was 54. She graduated in 1968 from Bishop Monogue High School and from the University of San Francisco in 1972 with a degree in sociology, then worked at a group home for young women in Sacramento.

She married Jim Collins in 1974, and the couple moved to Arizona. She received her master's degree in special education at the University of Arizona. She found her passion in deaf education, and used it to help countless deaf children, including many from the outlying Indian reservations.

The couple moved back to Sacramento shortly before the birth of their first daughter, Katie, in 1978. As Sue raised Katie and their second daughter Annie, born in 1982, her interest in alternative education grew. She founded the Leonardo da Vinci School in Sacramento just before the birth of their third daughter, Maggie, in 1985. For her efforts in creating this school, she was nominated for Sacramento's Woman of the Year.

During that time, Sue homeschooled Katie. Family members say she fell in love with homeschooling. This began Sue's lifelong commitment to educating not only her own children, but fostering a passion for learning in numerous young people. She continued homeschooling through all three of her daughters' high school graduations, a total of 20 years.

In 1989, the family relocated to Davis, where Sue helped nervous parents with the challenging and rewarding process of educating their own children. At a time when the decision to homeschool was a somewhat radical choice, she helped build a community of home educators who encouraged and nurtured one another, according to family members.

She actively participated in the homeschooling network she helped create, teaching several classes. She also worked at the Davis School for Independent Study and the Woodland Home Study Program.

Not only did she affect the lives of the young people she taught in these programs, she became a mentor to many youth of the community, family members say. She reached out to them through her participation as a coach and judge for Destination Imagination and Odyssey of the Mind, as a group leader for 4-H, and indirectly through her work on Don Saylor's Board of Education and City Council campaigns.

In the final years of homeschooling, she went back to work with the deaf full time. Family members say she shined in the classroom, and gained the respect and love of her fellow educators. Not only an extraordinarily competent teacher, she also provided emotional support to parents who were grappling with their child's deafness, according to family members.

Sue and Jim celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in December, the same day she was diagnosed with cancer. She reflected that in addition to marrying Jim, the best choice she ever made was to homeschool her daughters.

She was the backbone of the Collins family's faith and traditions, family members say. She attended daily Mass and interpreted at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento, and taught religious education to the Hmong community. Ultimately, more then preaching her faith, she lived it, family members say.

Sue's greatest legacy is her relationships, according to family members. Her charismatic spirit drew people to her and helped her sustain longtime friendships, and to nurture both work and student relationships. Sue counted her daughters' friends as part of their family.

During the final months of her life, the effect she had on others was shown by an outpouring of prayers, cards, meals and support. Family members say the friendships she created throughout her full life will help sustain them and the countless others she viewed as part of her family.

She is survived by her parents, her husband, her daughters and a sister, Sally.

Her life will be celebrated with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and a memorial Mass at 4 p.m. Thursday, with a potluck reception to follow. All are invited to attend. Events will be held at St. James Catholic Church, 200 W. 14th St. in Davis.

Donations may be made to the Sue Collins Memorial Fund at Yolo Federal Credit Union.
