Susan F. Basha

Susan F. Basha passed away on April 1, 2005 after a 15 month fight against cancer. Susie is survived by her husband, Steve, and their children, Elizabeth, Stephanie and Michael, who love her dearly and will miss her greatly. Her parents, Jim and Bobbie Grode, also survive her, as do her brothers, Bill and Pat, and her sisters, Sally, Katie, Mary and Ann and their respective families. They too love her and will miss her. She had many friends whom she cared deeply for and who cared deeply for her.

Susie had an incredible spirit that helped her meet the challenge of cancer with uncommon courage, dignity and grace. She is an inspiration to her family and friends for her tenacious effort to overcome this disease and for maintaining her sense of humor during this effort. Her faith in God sustained her throughout her life and during her struggle with cancer. Even when not feeling well from the effects of chemotherapy, Susie continued to deliver meals for Meals on Wheels until the week before her death. She was an active participant in the St. Vincent DePaul ministry of Woodland's Holy Rosary Church, a ministry dedicated to helping those in need. She also served as a volunteer usher for the Woodland Opera House.

Susie's passions were her family and being a nurse. She was devoted to her family and was a constant source of love and encouragement to her children and husband. She placed her family's needs above her own and took pride in their accomplishments. Her happiest times were those she spent with her family. Her family has many wonderful memories to sustain them throughout the rest of their lives.

Susie's work as a registered nurse for nearly 30 years was her other passion. She was an extraordinary nurse who was selflessly dedicated to providing wonderful care to her patients, including those she cared for in Woodland Memorial Hospital's intensive care unit and its recovery room. She greatly valued and respected her patients and her co-workers. Susie treasured the friendships she gained through her life's work.

Susie was very grateful to Dr. Alborz Alali and his excellent staff in the oncology unit of the Woodland Clinic for their medical treatment. Her family too appreciates the loving care given to Susie by Dr. Alali and his staff as well as by Dr. Rigoberto Barba, the nurses at Woodland Memorial Hospital, and Gwendolyn Kaltoft of Yolo Hospice during Susie's last few days. We will never forget the compassion and kindnesses shown to Susie and her family by these medical professionals and by Susie's many caring friends.

As has been said about others who have touched our lives in immeasurable ways, life is a race of varying lengths for each of us. For Susie, her race ended much too soon, but was superbly run.

A memorial Mass will be said for Susie on Friday, April 8 at 3:30 p.m. It will be held at Holy Rosary Church located at the corner of Walnut and Court streets in Woodland. Funeral arrangements are being handled by McNary's Chapel. In lieu of flowers, Susie's family suggests that contributions be made in her name to the donor's favorite charity.
