Judith Fink Anders-Richards

Judith Fink Anders-Richards died Dec. 25, 2002, at her home in Oswestry, Shropshire, England.

She was born in Albany, N.Y., on Nov. 2, 1946, the first child of U.S. Army Maj. Howard Fink and Charlotte Anderson. As a child, she lived in Okinawa and Fort Bliss, Texas, where his father was stationed to work as an engineer on missile projects.

She was valedictorian of her 800-member class at Lowell High School in Lowell, Mass., in 1964. That same year, she was awarded a full-tuition, four-year scholarship to Pembroke College at Brown University in Providence, R.I. She graduated in 1968 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1898, her great-grandfather, George Grafton Wilson, had been the first graduate student at Brown to earn a Ph.D. in history and afterwards taught international law at Harvard.

While still an undergraduate, in the spring of 1967, she studied at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Miss., a historically all-black college of the Congregational Church, and worked on voter registration projects with black communities that had been disenfranchised.

After graduation in 1968, she earned a master of arts degree at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, taking seminars there with Eli Wiesel, the Nobel Prize-winning writer on the Holocaust. She worked as associate pastor at the Presbyterian Church of Basking Ridge, N.J., and at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sacramento.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, the Rev. Donald Anders-Richards, at age 73 in 2000. He had been a professor of film in Sheffield, England.

She is survived by their son, Donald Anders-Richards, 11, who continues to board at Ellesmere College at St. Oswald's in Ellesmere, Shropshire, where he is active in theatrical and musical productions. She is also survived by her other children, Judith and John M. Chendo, graduates of Davis High School in 1996 and 1991, respectively; her siblings, Lisa Smart, R.N., Chris Smith and Martha Guilmain; her mother, Charlotte Anderson Fougere; her stepfather, Philip Fougere; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 4 at St. Oswald's Church in Oswestry, the birthplace of the World War I poet Wilfred Owen. Burial was in the church courtyard in Nockin, Shropshire.

ANDERSEN

Brian Matthew Andersen

Brian Matthew Andersen, a former resident of Davis, died Nov. 20, 2003, in Rancho Cordova. He was 53 years old.

Andersen spent most of his youth in Norway, the Netherlands and Arlington, Va. He was a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and in 1972 graduated from Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., with a degree in political science. He also received his commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

In 1981, he earned his master's degree in management from Webster College and in 1986 graduated from the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

Andersen's military career spanned 24 years. He was stationed at the Pentagon; Fort Lee, Va.; Fort Hood, Texas; Wichita Falls, Texas; and Frankfurt and Heidelberg, Germany. He was a battalion commander at Fort Jackson, S.C.

He was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He retired from the Army in 1996 as a lieutenant colonel.

He is survived by his former wives, Beverly Greene of Davis and Lisa James of Columbia, S.C.; his three daughters, Casey, Kristen and Lauren Andersen; a stepdaughter, Lydia James; his parents, Robert and Mary Andersen of Pine City, Minn.; two sisters, Gail Moore and her husband John of Woodbury, Minn., and Susan Casper and her husband David of Alamo; and four nieces and two nephews.

Following a funeral Nov. 28 in Woodbury, Minn., Andersen was buried icon with full military honors at Fort Snelling, Minn.

ANDERSEN

Emmy Margaret Andersen

Emmy Margaret Andersen died at Manor East of St. John's Retirement Village on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 at age 92.

Mrs. Anderson was born March 16, 1913 to William and Margaret Kruse on a farm outside of Woodland. She had been a Yolo County resident her entire life. She was a 1930 graduate of Woodland High School. For 17 years she was a telephone operator for Pacific Bell and at Woodland Memorial Hospital for three years. She later retired as a operator/dispatcher from Yolo County communications in 1978 after 17 years of service. She was also a member of St. John's United Church of Christ.

Survivors include Mrs. Andersen's daughter, Paula D. Castles and her husband Donald; her grandchildren, Douglas Castles, Kristin Florek and her husband John, all of Sacramento and Elizabeth Thorpe and her husband Bodie of Stockton; her nieces, Dorthy Eakle of Sacramento and Dolores Bernhardt of Vacaville; and her nephew, Ernest P. Kruse Jr. of Woodland. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Paul C. Andersen; her son, William P. Andersen; her parents; her sister, Lena Kruse; her brothers, Hans Peter Kruse and Ernest P. Kruse Sr.; and her sister-in-law, Grace E. Kruse.

The family requests memorials in Mrs. Andersen's name be directed to St. John's United Church of Christ, 432 Cleveland St., Woodland, 95695.

Services: A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 at Woodland Cemetery, 800 West St. with Reverend William Schroeder officiating. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.

ANDERSON

Bette Anderson

Bette Anderson died July 5, 2001, in her Davis home. Born on Aug. 31, 1924, in Pauls Valley, Okla., she was 76 years old.

She was raised in Pauls Valley until moving to San Jose in 1948. She lived for some time in Southern California until moving to Davis four years ago. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Davis, the Davis Senior Center and the Woodland Senior Citizens Center, and did volunteer work at Courtyard Healthcare in Davis. She was loved by many of the residents at Courtyard, where she made many birthday cards for residents who do not have family or did not otherwise receive cards.

She is survived by her children, Patricia Finch of Torrance and Michael Anderson of San Jose. She also leaves a sister, Norma Clark of Elmore City, Okla.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service Monday, July 23, at 11 a.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church of Davis, 770 Pole Line Road. Remembrances may be made in her name to the First Southern Baptist Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.

HARBIT

Bonnie J. Harbit

Bonnie J. Harbit died on July 2, 2002, in her Davis home. She was 72 years old.

She was born on Oct. 18, 1929, in Newark, Ohio, and graduated from Newark High School.

After her marriage to Keith B. Harbit, she lived in Philadelphia, Pa., for many years where she worked as a data processor for Smith, Klein and French Laboratories.

The couple moved to Davis in 1986, giving her an opportunity to attend UC Davis, where she earned her bachelor's degree in religious studies.

She was a longtime volunteer for the Yolo County Library and the STEAC food closet, as well as an active member of the Davis United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband; sisters Betty McLaughlin and Flora McCrillis of Newark, Ohio; and her brother, Robert Hafer, of Newark, Ohio.

A private burial will be held at the Davis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests that donations be made in her name to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

HARPER

Glenn Nesbit Harper

Glenn Nesbit Harper died of pneumonia Feb. 17, 2005, at the University Retirement Community in Davis. He was 88 years old.

A memorial service was scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today at the University Retirement Community auditorium, 1515 Shasta Drive.

Born in Maryville, Mo., on Dec. 13, 1916, he was 2 years old when he moved to Yuma, Colo., and moved several years later to Fort Morgan, Colo. He graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1934. He worked for a time in the local drugstore and was the city driver for the Morgan Laundry & Dry Cleaners.

In 1940, he enrolled in the civil pilots training and soloed at the local airport July 13, 1940. Shortly after the attack at Pearl Harbor, the U.S. government sent him to the University of Kansas for his secondary flight training. He was then sent to Colorado State University in Fort Collins for his cross-country rating. After completing that training, he went to Atlanta to get his commercial pilot's license and to be a co-pilot for Eastern Airlines.

He married Mary Roberts, his sweetheart from Fort Morgan, on April 9, 1943. In December of that year, he reported to LaGuardia Airport in New York. Several months later, he became part of American Airlines Air Transport Command.

He flew to Casablanca, Paris and Scotland, picking up the recently wounded soldiers and returning them to the Brooklyn Naval Hospital. During the 33 years that he was a pilot for American Airlines, he logged 28, 000 air hours and flew 13 different types of airplanes, ranging from the DC3, to Boeing 707, to the Boeing 747 carrying 400 passengers.

He was based for 25 years at LaGuardia Airport, followed by Idlewild and Kennedy airports, and for the last eight years at San Francisco International Airport.

While living in Saratoga, he and his wife became business partners in commercial properties with United Airlines Capt. Max Rasmussen and his wife Audrey.

He was a member of Davis Community Church, the Grey Eagles of American Airlines, the Allied Pilots Association and the University Retirement Community Pilots Group.

He was preceded in death by a son, Glenn Jr., in 1967; five brothers, Earle, Archibald Jr., Donald, Dale and Kenneth; and three sisters, Betty Smith, Winifred McDonough and Muriel Speer.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Harper; a son, Tom Harper and his wife Phyllis Boorinakis of Auburn; a daughter, Maureen and her husband Peter Verheyen of Harvard, Mass.; and his sister, Barbara Jean Thetford of Paso Robles.

He is further survived by three granddaughters, Julia Boorinakis Harper, and Clara and Robin Verheyen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University Retirement Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

HARRINGTON

Hazel Irene Mead Harrington

Hazel Irene Mead Harrington died peacefully in Sacramento at Sutter General Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer Thursday, April 25, 2002, at age 79.

Born Feb. 20, 1923, in Willows, Mrs. Harrington was the daughter of the late Giles Mead and Minnie (Nichols) Mead. She attended Woodland High School before marrying Francis (Frank) Harrington of Woodland. They settled in Sacramento, after Frank returned from World War II.

Mrs. Harrington is survived by her sons, Paul Harrington and wife Kelly and, Stephen Harrington; and grandchildren, Katherine, Shea, Joseph, Stephen, and Michael, all of Sacramento.

She is also survived by her sister, Jane Campbell of Woodland; sister-in-law, Hazel Mead of Rocklin; and numerous cousins; nieces; and nephews.

Mrs. Harrington was preceded in death by her husband, Francis (Frank) Harrington; sister, Helen Norton of Madison; brother, Giles (Lum) Mead of Rocklin; and brother-in-law, Darryl Campbell of Woodland.

A funeral service is scheduled at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 1, at All Hallows Church, 5500 13th Ave., Sacramento. Interment to follow at noon, at Monument Hill Memorial Park, 35036 County Road 22.

Mission Funeral Home, 22297 Mission Blvd., Hayward, 94541 is assisting the family with arrangements.
