HUNGATE

Robert Edward Hungate (1st of 2 obituaries)

Robert Edward Hungate died Sept. 21, 2004. Born in Cheney, Wash., on March 2, 1906, he was 98 years old.

The second born of five sons, his parents Joseph W. and Winona T. Hungate imbued him with a lifelong interest in learning, knowing and doing. After graduating from Cheney Normal School, now Eastern Washington State College, he taught school for members of the Spokane Indian tribe at Wellpinit, Wash. He also taught at Sprague, Wash., where he learned a dance. Bob "danced the Charleston" the rest of his life, literally and figuratively.

In 1928 he entered Stanford University where he earned his Ph.D. in biology. He also met and married in 1933 the young, beautiful woman who greeted him on the Quad with "Hello there, Bob Hungate, " Alice Elizabeth Wolcott. They were married 67 years before her death on Jan. 1, 2000.

He took his doctorate with C.B. van Niel at Stanford and Hopkins Marine Station and then joined the faculty at the University of Texas.

Always a staunch proponent of academic freedom and rigorous discussion, argument, or debate depending on the other's view of it, he also was fond of the fishing trips he and his colleagues took to the Texas lakes.

His work with cellulose digestion in termites began in Texas, work in a big state on small systems although he moved his research to the rumen while at UT.

In 1945, the family moved to Washington State College, now Washington State University, in Pullman, Wash., as professor of microbiology.

His work at Washington State began to attract Ph.D. candidates beginning the passing on of rigorous research technique to the next generation of microbiologists. It was this working with active, inquiring minds who would push the science to the next levels that became his most rewarding activity.

Hungate's work with digestion in ruminant animals continued there. While at WSU he became one of the founding members of the Beaver Creek Camp Association, which acquired a camp at the northern end of Priest Lake in Idaho. Priest Lake, a place he last visited just this summer had always held a strong place in his life. He summered there with the Ribes eradication project, "Blister Rust, " fought fire in 1928, built log cabins with his brothers, father and grandfather, became the outdoors person he never ceased to be.

In 1956, the family moved to Davis, his proudly proclaimed "Cultural Center of California." He became an active Rotarian, an interest sustained for the rest of his life. His academic life blossomed at UC Davis, where he served several years as chairman of the department of microbiology, published the definitive summary, "The Rumen and its Microbes."

The Hungate's home on Anderson Road was often a gathering place for the graduate students who became personal friends. He was elected to serve as the president of the American Society for Microbiology by his fellow microbiologists. Hungate spoke of, "Life with Microbes" as the 25th annual Faculty Research Lecturer in 1967.

He and Alice were dedicated travelers, visiting most of the world and spending sabbaticals in Manchester, England; Palmerston North, New Zealand; and on a Guggenheim Fellowship at Cornell University, New York. He had the opportunity to study other ruminant animals, the dugong in Australia, the elephant in Kenya. After he stopped teaching at UC Davis, he continued to seek and receive funding for continued research projects for many years. He also began to play more golf and following another lifelong love, began to sing with the Hi Wheelers. The bicycle he so loved to ride over to the lab, to the grocery store, to Rotary, was a frequent sight on Davis roads and paths. Truly Davis was home for him, "Bob Hungate Day" on March 2, 2004, his 98th birthday, lovingly reflected that.

He is survived by his children, Robert W. and JoAnne M. Hungate of Wellesley, Mass.; Dan P. and Connie C. Hungate of Mercer Island, Wash.; and H. Nona Hungate of Oakland; two brothers, Dick of Priest Lake and Laguna Hills, and Frank of Priest Lake and Seattle; six grandchildren and their spouses, and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be scheduled in Davis at a later date, probably mid-November.

Robert E. Hungate (2nd of 2)

Robert E. Hungate died Sept. 21, 2004. He was 98.

A memorial service in his honor will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road. A reception will be held at the church following the service.

Hungate was born in Cheney, Wash., on March 2, 1906. After graduating from Cheney Normal School, now Eastern Washington State College, he taught school for members of the Spokane Indian tribe at Wellpinit, Wash. In 1956, he moved his family to Davis, where he served several years as chairman of the UC Davis department of microbiology.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the EWU Foundation/Hungate Scholarship, 127 Hargreaves, Cheney, WA 99004. The scholarship was established by Hungate during his lifetime to support Native American education.
