Dorsey Childers

Funeral services for Dorsey C. Childers, Woodland resident who died Monday morning at DeWitt hospital, will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Kraft Brothers chapel. Burial will follow in the Woodland cemetery.

Dorsey Childers

Funeral services for Dorsey Childers were held at 10 a.m. yesterday morning at Kraft Brothers' Chapel.

Rev. Frank Norris conducted the service. Mrs. Elmer L. Hoffmann was organist.

Pallbearers were Clifton Kramer, Irvine Kramer Jr., Leland Childers, Melvin Kroner, Chet Hiddleson and Seraphine Silva.

Interment was in Woodland cemetery.

CHILDERS - In Auburn, Placer County, January 27, 1964, Dorsey D. Childers of Woodland, Yolo County, husband of Niobe of Sacramento, father of Robert E. and Mrs. Betty Smith, both of Woodland, and Doris J. Childers of Sacramento, and brother of Mrs. Bessie Kramer of Knights Landing, Yolo County, Mrs. Ella Doster, Mrs. Lula Glenn and Mrs. Mabel Isaacs, all of Woodland, and Rhoda Faye Childers of Los Angeles; a native of Oregon; aged 73 years. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM tomorrow in the Kraft Brothers Chapel in Woodland. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery.

George Perry Childers

Childers Is Pneumonia Victim Here

George Perry Childers, 77, who was a member of the famous wagon train that broke the original Oregon Trail, died of pneumonia at this home, 147 First Street, at 9:25 o'clock last night.

When 11 years old, Childers crossed the plains with the train that split at Salt Lake City. One section came south to California, while the one Childers was with went on to Oregon.

The late James Perry Childers, Childers' father, came to California around Cape Horn in 1849 along with his brother, who died and was buried icon at sea. James Childers mined gold in California for five years, each winter living at Marysville. Later he went east to Scotland County, Missouri, where George was born. In 1865, when George was 11 years old, the family settled in Oregon, where George resided the remainder of his life except for about 10 years, which were spent in Woodland.

The Childers family was a pioneer group of the Grand Rounde [sic - Grande Ronde] Valley, Oregon. It settled around La Grande and has been one of the leading families of that section for the last three-quarters of a century.

George Childers married Nancy Ann Chase December 31, 1879, and they celebrated their fifty-second wedding anniversary last December. Eleven children were born to the couple. Nine of whom are still living. There were two sons, Claude D. and Sidney K. Childers, who are now deceased. Those living are Lulu Belle Glenn of La Grande, LeRoy [sic - Lee Roy] Childers of Cove, Ore., D. D. Childers of Woodland, Mrs. Ella Doster of Honolulu, T. H., Mrs. I. E. Kramer, Mrs. Mabel Marlin, Miss Ethel Childers and George T. Childers, all of Woodland, and Mrs. R. M. Robinson of Long Beach.

Kraft Brothers are in charge of funeral arrangements, and it has not been decided yet whether the body will be shipped to Oregon or whether it will be buried icon in Woodland.

There are 16 grand children and four great grand children surviving Childers.

Marie Elva Childers

Mrs. Marie Elva Childers passed away on Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at her Woodland home. Born on March 28, 1911, in Kansas, she was 91 years old.

Mrs. Childers was born and raised in Kerwin, Kansas, and moved to Winters in 1949. She resided in Winters until 1986 when she moved to Woodland. She worked for 10 years for Contadina as a cook and then worked for over 30 years as a cook at the Buckhorn in Winters. In addition to her work as a cook, she was the first Police Women in Winters. Her job at the Police Department was to escort female suspects. At the time she worked for the Police Department a male police officer could not be alone with a female suspect. Mrs. Childers still holds her police badge which is numbered 1. She also enjoyed crochet.

Mrs. Childers was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Childers in May of 1986, a son Robert Underwood in December of 1989 and a grandson Darrell Underwood, in 1997.

She is survived by her children, Myrna Kiefer of Winters, Anita Feakes and husband Larry of Prineville, Ore., Judy Richards and husband Clyde of Craigmont, Idaho, Donna Klutsenbaker and husband Roger of Woodland, Jennifer Bigelow and husband Lowell of Woodland, Tina Childers of Woodland, and a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Underwood of Reno, Nev.; and a brother, Dean Price of Denver, Colo. Mrs. Childers also leaves grandchildren, Danny Underwood, Debra Rosevear, Deanna Denny, Denise Hayden, all of Nevada, Robbie Kiefer, Karen Elwood, Dana Butman, Mark Wisterman, Rus2sell Wisterman, Tim Wisterman, Eric Wisterman, Cindy Carrion, Greg Fishaugh, Richard Tunstall, David Boswell, Roger (Pee Wee) Klutsenbaker, Michael Klutsenbaker, Carrie Hogan, Wendy Klutsenbaker, Sheila Conner, all of California, and Corina Couture of Idaho. Mrs. Childers is survived by 50 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Smith's Colonial Chapel, 14 Main St. in Winters and are respectfully invited to attend the funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at Smith's Colonial Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Winters Cemetery. Remembrances may be made in her name to the American Heart Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith's Colonial Chapel in Winters.

Niobe Childers

Funeral services for Mrs. Niobe Childers are pending at Kraft Brothers chapel in Woodland.

Mrs. Childers died Saturday in Mercy hospital in Sacramento.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Betty Smith of Woodland.

Funeral service for Mrs. Niobe Frances Childers, 77, who died at Mercy General Hospital, Sacramento, Saturday, will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Kraft Brothers Chapel with burial to follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park.

She is survived by a son, Robert of Woodland, a daughter, Mrs. Betty Ann Smith, of Woodland and a daughter Miss Doris June Childers of Sacramento, a brother, Alvadore Andrew of Portland, Calif., six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian church, Sacramento, the Forum Allied Arts, Senior Citizens of Sacramento, a past deacon of the Presbyterian Women's Association.

Victoria Mary Childers (1st of 2 obits.)

Victoria Mary Childers passed away Feb. 20, 2006 at Alderson Convalescent Hospital. She was born in San Francisco April 26, 1905. Her parents, Michilina and Francisco Bertolucci, had immigrated to the United States in 1900 from Lucca, Italy.

Following the San Francisco earthquake, her family relocated to Woodland. Victoria graduated from Dingle Elementary School and attended Woodland High School. She went to work at age 16 at what was then Martha's Bakery and is now Timothy's Bakery. She later worked for many years at the Woodland Laundry, and then the Woodland French Laundry from where she retired.

Victoria was a great walker, loved to shop and in her retirement years enjoyed many activities at the Senior Center.

Victoria celebrated her 100th birthday last April with two parties, and salutations from President Bush and past president William Clinton.

She is survived by her daughter Ima Jean Badger and son-in-law Bob Badger of Woodland, granddaughters Vicky Kaleta and husband Paul of Lake Tahoe, Cindy Ithurburn of Yuba City and grandson Dan Badger of Lockeford and his fiance Kristy Geer of Davis. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Karin and Casey Kaleta of Lake Tahoe and Michelle, Christinia, Bert and Bob Ithurburn of Yuba City.

Preceding her were her parents, brother Adolph "Monk" Bertolucci and husband Wallace H. Childers in 1966.

Victoria was cherished by her family and her wonderful sense of humor and common sense approach to life will be missed. The family will celebrate her life and wish to extend many thanks to the Alderson staff for their care and concern over these last years. McNary's Chapel is assisting with arrangements, and remembrances in her honor should be the donor's choice.

The family requests memorials in Mrs. Childers' name be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.

Services: Respecting the wishes of Mrs. Childers, private family services will be held. She will be inurned next to her husband at Woodland Cemetery. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

CHILDRESS

Andrea Jean Childress

Andrea Jean Childress passed away gently at the age of fifty-four in the presence of her immediate family and her friend Melanie after struggling for two years against cancer.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 21, 1952, Andrea lived in nearby Norwood until 1968 when her family moved to Bel Air, Maryland.

There she graduated from Bel Air High School in 1970.

In 1972, she and her future husband David moved to Berkeley to attend Merritt College.

In 1975 they both moved to Rohnert Park, California where Andrea graduated from Santa Rosa Junior College with an AS degree in Radiological Technology.

She subsequently worked as an X-Ray Technician at the Palm Drive Hospital in Sebastopol and at the Sutter Davis Hospital in Davis and as an Ultrasound Technician at Sutter Memorial in Sacramento for the past seven years.

Andrea loved her family, her work, gardening and walking on the beach.

Andrea is survived by her mother and father, Bill and Madeline Austin, sisters Madeline Pruett and Martha O’Fallon and brother Mark, her loving children Michael and Amelia, and by her husband David.

A Rosary will be held on Monday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the St. James Parish Church, Davis, followed by a funeral mass at 11 p.m.
