WILLIAMS

Frances Irene Cleveland Williams

Frances Irene Cleveland Williams died peacefully at her daughter Karen's home in Davis on May 16, 2005. She was 86.

Born July 10, 1918, she was one of seven children of Irene Fields and George Cleveland of Yoakum County, Texas. She and her siblings attended a one-room schoolhouse before she earned a degree in nutrition and dietetics from Texas Tech University in Lubbock at the age of 20.

She married Floyd Lewis Williams, a United States naval officer and professor of engineering at Texas Tech, on New Year's Eve 1943.

It was said that her life's passion was her family. She was a devoted sister, wife, aunt and proud mother and "grandmommie."

She and her husband and two young daughters, Katrina and Karen, moved to Southern California in the 1950s. She enjoyed cooking and baking, avidly followed the New York Stock Exchange, was a skilled seamstress and raised beautiful roses and orchids.

After the girls married, she relocated to Santa Paula for 21 years where she and her husband operated a thriving citrus and avocado ranch before moving to Davis in 1996.

She volunteered many hours to Girl Scouts in North Hollywood and the Methodist Church and Blanchard Community Library in Santa Paula. She was an avid reader and strong believer in higher education. She generously assisted all of her grandchildren in their educational pursuits and celebrated each graduation.

She enjoyed international travel, visiting much of the world with her husband. Two highlights of her travels were a visit to Italy in 1984 to welcome her youngest grandchild, and a two-week Alaskan cruise in 1993 with her husband and family to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

In her final months, she continued to give joy and pride to her family and friends as she valiantly battled cancer.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Glenn, Wayne and Jack, and sister Neweta, all of Texas.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Floyd Williams of Davis; her daughters, Katrina Steiner and her husband James of Ventura; and Karen Slinkard and her husband Stephen of Davis; her brother, G.W. and sister Fatine, of Texas; and her grandchildren, Christopher Steiner and Matthew Steiner of Las Vegas, Nev.; Donovan Slinkard of Davis; Dustin Steiner of Washington, D.C.; Megan Slinkard of Albuquerque, N.M.; Shannon Steiner of San Diego; and Monica Slinkard, at college in Davidson, N.C.

She spent her last days peacefully with her daughters and under the care of Yolo Hospice, to whom the family extends heartfelt thanks for their extraordinary caring and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations to Yolo Hospice would be appreciated.
